THE BARBADOS RED CROSS SOCIETY’S (BRCS) Meals on Wheels programme is receiving some much-needed support through the Massy Foundation.
The Massy Foundation has committed to making monthly donations of groceries for a 12-month period to this programme, which is one of the Red Cross’ longstanding humanitarian and health initiatives.
The Meals on Wheels programme feeds an average of 150 needy persons, including the elderly (shut-ins), indigent, and persons with disabilities – who are either blind or amputees – across several communities every week-day.
At a recent presentation to formally signal the partnership, director of the Massy Foundation, Christina Johnson, said the decision to support this established feeding programme was an easy one as it spanned two of the foundation’s focus areas, namely health and humanitarian causes and also because of its targeted approach in reaching the most vulnerable and disadvantaged persons in the society.
“The Meals on Wheels programme is one of those critical support programmes aimed at assisting the neediest in our country. Therefore, we see this as an opportunity to collaborate with an organisation which has been at the forefront of this effort and through them we too can hopefully help to enrich the day-to-day lives of these individuals in some way,” Johnson noted.
In welcoming the partnership, director general of the BRCS, Edmond Bradshaw, said it was indeed an important one which will result in significant cost-savings for the Red Cross. (PR)
