THE BARBADOS FLAG was flown with pride on Saturday as Zander Venezia and Jacob Burke swept the top two positions in the Premier Under-16 division of the keenly contested Rip Curl Gromsearch qualifying surfing event in Outer Banks, North Carolina.

The coveted Banzai Bowls manoeuvre of the qualifying event ended with a split decision in both categories as Venezia took top honours for the first time. Burke, who had the best manoeuvre during the final stop, was second.

It meant that Burke and Venezia qualified for the National Finals to be held in Santa Cruz, California, in October the winner of which will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to a remote spot around the world to compete in the global final.

It all began at New Smyrna Beach the previous weekend when Burke and Venezia were eliminated in the quarter-finals. (PR/EZS)
