ONE DOWN, two to go.

Darian King is now but a couple swings away from history, having inched closer to making that ever elusive main draw of a Grand Slam following yesterday’s routine win in the first round of qualifying at the US Open.

Playing Daniel Nguyen at a surprisingly packed Court 5, the 25-year-old King was simply too much for his outmatched American opponent in a straightforward 6-2, 6-1 victory that lasted all of 64 minutes.

The result put him in a second-round matchup with Chilean Nicolas Jarry, who advanced by beating Calvin Hemery of France 7-5, 6-3.

It was King’s second straight opening-round qualifying victory on that same Court 5, coming exactly a year to the day that he outlasted Grega Zemlja in front a strong pro-Caribbean crowd. (JM)
