Daylight could delight

Published on: 7/5/08.

by TYRONE EVELYN

DAYLIGHT EXPRESS can delight his connections and supporters by winning the Carlyle "C.A." Jones Memorial Trophy Handicap at the Garrison Savannah today, Remembering Former Jockeys Day.

The colt, owned by Lord Michael Taylor/Clifton Racing and trained by Robert Peirce, could come into 2009 Gold Cup reckoning with an emphatic win in today's 1 570 metres event.

The American-bred colt won his first race in impressive fashion when he defeated raging hot favourite JakeJakeJake and some other three-year-olds over 1 570 metres on March 15 in a fast time of one minute, 33.3 seconds.

To show that win was no fluke, he returned on April 12 and defeated a similar field, again over 1 570 metres.

Daylight Express has the ability to be on the pace, or to be held up and come from just off it.

He looks a champion in the making and another easy win today could confirm this.

Although he may be the overwhelming favourite, he will not have it all his own way, with horses such as Messi, I'malucky-native, Look For Wisdom, Sprite and Copy That in the line-up.

Of these, Messi looks the one to make a race of it with the selection. The Roger Parravicino-trained colt finished second to Daylight Express in that April 12 race. He returned on May 12 to land the Ocala Breeders' Stakes over today's distance of 1 570 metres. Look For Wisdom, also trained by Parravicino, finished third in that May 12 event.

I'maluckynative, the last of three horses handled by Parravicino in today's event, is another in with a chance.

I'maluckynative registered back-to-back wins over 1 570 metres on March 15 and April 12, and those performances have brought him into contention.

Daylight Express could also expect some stiff opposition from stablemates Copy That and Sprite.

The former has placed in all of his starts so far, with his best performance probably being a second place, behind I'malucky-native, on April 12.

Sprite, with two wins behind her name already including one over 1 570 metres, has been a consistent sort and cannot be ignored.

Creole First Edition completes the seven-horse field. This Edward Walcott-trained animal has some ability but he has been dogged with problems and today's race will be his first since January.

Today's Hi-5 is on Race 6, the Jason "Blackie" Harewood Memorial Trophy Condition over 1 000 metres.

There is a guaranteed payment of $7 500 for the Hi-5 in which punters will have to select in correct order the first five horses. The horses to note here are Queen Titania, Who's In Love, Zidane, Pretty Penny and The Bangor Baron, not necessarily in that order.

Stephne Goddard's Compton Fields could land his first win since coming to Barbados by taking the Jamar Maughn Memorial Trophy Condition going 1 570 metres.

The Kenneth Stanton-trained animal has been running well in most of his races without getting his head in front.

The conditions look to be in his favour and, with Paul Leacock aboard, the combination should be running on too strong at the finish for the 11 other opponents.
