Five for T&T music festival

Published on: 11/18/2009.

FIVE BARBADIAN ARTISTES have been invited to participate in the Commonwealth Resounds Music Festival in Trinidad and Tobago.

William Smokey Burke, Kareem Clarke, Onika Blak Kla Soyl Best, James Lovell and Jomo Lorde head off to Trinidad next week to represent the island at the indigenous music festival.

Chief executive officer of the Copyright Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Inc., Erica Smith, told the DAILY NATION the acts were strategically chosen.

"We tried to find people who had complementary skills. They're not necessarily the most popular entertainers, but they're recognised as talented," Smith explained.

Members of the group said they were honoured to be chosen to represent their country at such an event.

"I feel good about it, because I am an indigenous artiste and the music they want us to push in Trinidad is Barbadian national sound. It's like spouge, mixed with a little kaiso, but spouge is really it," Blak Kla Soyl stated.

The veteran in the crowd, Smokey, said one was always proud to represent country, whether dressed in national colours or not.

"Despite what other Caribbean islands may think, Barbados does have indigenous music. And I think the people who have been chosen to go will represent well, our indigenous music," he added.

The artistes will also get to work with people from other parts of the Commonweath in the choir and orchestra. (YB)

Popular: Eric Smith Coscap : 11/19/2009
First of all let me say congratulations to the chosen five to represent Barbados, in a season where we are at our proudest and most patriotic. I believe that they will do exceptionally well as they are popular in their respected genres. On that note let me NOT AGREE with the quote from Erica Smith and i quote "They're not necessarily the most popular entertainers....."Smith explained. I believe stongly that they are very popular especially Ms.Kareen Clarke with her soulful and exceptional grace and true spirit and Mrs.Onika 'blakklaysoyl Best" the daughter of the late El Verno Del Congo with her eccentric roots rock jazz culture of which i have had the priviledge to experience first hand from both of them I wish them all the best and success and maybe then they would defy the quote of Erica Smith! LEts hope that when they do become 'popular' that they can still be reached and be accessible! Blessing

national pride : 11/19/2009
IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE DISPLAY TRUE NATIONAL PRIDE. ONLY UNTIL THIS IS TRULY IN THE HEARTS OF BAJANS WILL WE THE ARTIST BE ABLE TO HEAR OUR MUSIC EVERYDAY.

Are we without pride? : 11/18/2009
Congrats to the chosen I am sure they will represent us well, but a fire is burning in my belly. I would like the Nation to do a feature on the "seasonality" of our culture. It pains me daily to hear radio announcers and DJs comment that they are playing the "music of the season." What season? It seems that we are expected to show Bajan pride for 30 days, November 1 - 30, and the six weeks that we celebrate Crop Over. We are like sponges the other 290 odd days, taking in whatever is served up!! Why do we sit back and allow this to happen? Am I the only person in radio land bothered by this?
