THE BARBADOS WORKERS' UNION (BWU) has bought a $2 million property near its Harmony Hall, St Michael headquarters.
The property, called Hempstead, consists of about three acres, on which sit a main house of coral stone and wood, a cottage on pillars, a gazebo and a windmill.
The property, formerly owned by writer Cynthia Wilson, is on Hindsbury Road, St Michael, a stone's throw from Solidarity House, the BWU's headquarters.
BWU general secretary Sir Roy Trotman said recently that BWU officials felt that in ten years' time the union would require additional space for its many Solidarity House functions.
The newly-acquired property might also prove useful for services such as a day-care centre and additional training facilities, Sir Roy explained.
Along with its Solidarity House headquarters, the union has a Labour College in St Philip and operates a credit union from its earlier headquarters on Fairchild Street in Bridgetown. (TY)
