West Coast Boardwalk ready

hese two postmen also took some time out to view the new boardwalk.

THE WEST COAST BOARDWALK has been completed and is indeed a picture of beauty.

Work being carried out by Capital Signal Caribbean Limited officially came to a halt on October 30, and showed the company had met its original target date, despite a few hitches encountered along the way.

Now fully landscaped, the area is already attracting dozens of tourists and locals on a daily basis, some of whom have been using it for exercise purposes.

The new boardwalk covers a 500-metre stretch and is valued in the region of BDS$6 million. It runs from the back of Beachlands, which is just above where the old Chefette Restaurant was located, down to Zaccios, formerly known as Cocomos.

Owner of the West Side Scuba Centre Trudy Grannum, said it was great to have the new boardwalk in the area, noting it had brought an added 'touch'.

"The beach was totally gone, it wasn't being utilised. But now with the boardwalk in place, the area has been attracting dozens . . . ," she added.

Grannum said while she loved the new look, she felt a jetty would have added that final touch and would also be good for recreation purposes.

"I feel Government should build some more jetties throughout the country. I really miss them, they are such a good source of recreation".

The SATURDAY SUN also caught up with two visitors, who expressed their delight with the boardwalk.

"It's very nice. It needs a bit of cleaning up but it's very beautiful" said Giles Hitchcock from England.

Jacob Vanhoudt from the Netherlands said he loved the new boardwalk and the fact that all Barbadian beaches were public.

"The boardwalk is fantastic. It should be a little longer, but I love it" he stated, adding that he would be visiting the five-kilometre boardwalk on the South Coast. (CT)

It is nice what they have done there . Lets just hope it is well maintained . Not like the South Coast a few months back . Where Locals had to go down there and clean up .

Looks attractive but why all the negativity, like the writer who thinks that he will be robbed. Any how did politics get in BLP supporter, this belongs to the people not a political party. Are you willing to take credit for the mistakes as well? Remember it works both ways.

How about a marina? : 11/13/2009
The boardwalk is lovely. What would enhance this is a marina in Holetown where flooding occurs. Dredge Hudson pond and use it as a marina for local craft, and make it complementary to the restaurants down first and second streets. When rough seas occur, it will be a safe haven for local boats. Run the marina right up behind St.James Secondary School with food kios, and it can become another Oistins like strip.

This sure was a well kept secret; i was there when chefette closed and months after and didn't notice a hint to this kind of activity, now when i'm home i have a place where i can exercise.

They say, "a picture tells a thousand words" I have to agree. It looks breath takingly fantastic. I have the feeling of nostalgia just looking at the backdrop of the blue sky with white, soft, cascading clouds meeting the turquoise water. Beautiful. I hope it would withstand the test better than the one recently shown in St. Peter. I encourage Bajans to take a Sunday afternoon stroll and enjoy it for its beauty. Jersey Girl 11/12/2009

After seeing how the boardwalks in New Jersey were ripped up by the tide during storms, it is great so see this what I would call "Beach Walk" constructed to withstand the elements. This also decreases the cost of maintenance. Get some good walking shoes for the trek.

I ran along the boardwalk a couple of weeks ago whilst on holiday. It was fantastic to be safe and enjoy the scenery which was quite breath taking early in the morning. Despite the early hour it was extremely busy . I'm sure it will be a huge hit with everyone.

Looks good. Hope to walk there soon and hope security is tight and the elderly like me can enjoy it without having the little pension snatched and the old handbag thrown in the sea. Retired.

Boardwalk?? : 11/7/2009
why is this boardwalk concrete and not board, like the south coast walk. Don't get me wrong, I like it, but it's harder on the feet.. Having said that.. 2 things.. 1. The boards on the south coast boardwalk are hard on the feet as well and 2. I'm guessing this isn't really meant to be a "boardwalk along the beach" as the beach is gone, but a way to get from point A to point B with out going via the road.. so shoes will be needed.
