Husband to get mental check

Published on: 11/4/2009.

RICHARD O'HARA COX was ordered to the Psychiatric Hospital yesterday for evaluation when he returned to the No. 4 Supreme Court.

Justice Dr Sonia Richards, who is presiding, ordered the evaluation and adjourned the matter until Monday.

In June last year, Cox pleaded guilty to unlawfully and maliciously inflicting serious bodily harm on his wife Jacqueline on November 20, 2002.

Cox, of Half Moon Fort, St Lucy, had also been charged with causing serious bodily harm to his wife with intent on the same date, but he denied that charge.

He is represented by attorney Vincent Watson while Principal Crown Counsel Anthony Blackman is prosecuting.

The court had heard that the wife, who had a turbulent relationship with her husband, went to bed around 10 p.m. but awoke in the early hours of November 20, 2002, to a burning bedroom at their Half Moon Fort home.

She jumped through a window and came face to face with her husband.

She already had burns to her lower limbs but was forced to flee again. Her husband, however, caught her and, as he started to beat her, he said: "I told you that I am going to kill you."

The wife escaped because she pretended to be dead. She was later rescued by officers from the Barbados Fire Service.

TEMPORARILY INSANE : 11/5/2009
There is a lot to this story that is not being reported in the paper and I would not be so quick to judge. What he did was wrong however I think he was driven to it.

Crazy : 11/5/2009
I hope he was in Jail for the past 7 years. It is really unfortunate that our bajan culture has taken domestic violence on women so casually. Why do bajans standby and let their mothers, daughters and sisters be abused by these cowards?

domestic violence 11/4/2009 : 11/4/2009
This story could only happen in Barbados. What took this case so long to be tried in the court system? this is a joke. The defendant certainly had enough time to actually kill his wife if he wanted to. When is Barbados going to wake up and treat these domestic issues seriously? Based on the outcome of this case, it is no wonder most women don't bother reporting domestic cases. Afterall, the men get a slap on their hands and move on to another woman. Bajan MA

What am I reading? : 11/4/2009
Seven years ago this man pleaded guilty to a charge of setting his wife on fire. First, why it took all this time to have a trial and now sending him for mental evaluation after seven years.Where was this man all this time.Let`s say that he was lockup and he won the case, what would be his next move. This is play-play justice. Terminology : 11/4/2009
People before you all get bent out of shape please do you homework. He was charged with with causing serious bodily harm to his wife with intent. This is similar to the US term of attempted murder. Remember that our judicial system is modeled after the British system. So stop applying US standards and terminology.

Justice, what justice? : 11/4/2009
I would like to know why it took 7 yrs for this case be heard. It seems like this is the norm in Barbados.Sometime ago a baby was accidently shot in the mother`s arms and the case was tried 7 yrs.later. When I read that I said that they were waiting for this child to testify. As someone asked where was this man for the 7 yrs while awaiting trial for setting his wife on fire, if he was in jail he would almost do half the time.I also read that his attorney did not show up at a hearing because his client did not notify him of the court date, I thought it was the other way around so the judge had to postpone the hearing,I did not read that the Judge repremanded the attorney but then in 7 yrs.the attorney, witnesses, the victim, the files and what ever could get loss in the shuffle. The best thing that the Nation newspaper did was to open a space for the `Net readers to comment on the happenings in Barbados, mostly the overseas readers and some of the comments should be printed so that issues like SUV,dress code for people going to collect documents in the court building,no hurry for a Forensic Pathologist and the people that make these decisions can see what the readers say. I believe this will let Barbados know that they have a long way to go to catch up with the rest of the real world.

husband mental case : 11/4/2009
when people are not comfortable with each other they should go they separate ways and continue to live peaceful lives with who soever they wish. It will not help to stay in a turbulent relationship when real love does not exist anymore.when people remain in these types of relationships it breeds envy/hatred/animosity.

Backwards Barbados : 11/4/2009
As i always say... only in Barbados... Barbados is so backwards it's not even funny... Men have to pay for the things they do to women, they take a woman's life, they pay with theirs, the take a limb they repay with one of theirs... I'm a male... just had to state that

The man is violent not mad : 11/4/2009
He needs a spell in jail for a long time. The coutrs needs to protect women from violent and evil men such as Richard O'Hara Cox. How could a man who tried to burn his wife to death not be aware of the consequences of such an act. These acts of domestic violence has to taken very seriously by sending a strong deterence to these idiot men. If you beat your wife/partner you go to straight to jail.

That man is mad : 11/4/2009
I believe that Mr. Cox should spend some good time in HMP Dodds. Not only did he try to set her on fire, but he also beat her when she tried to escape. Bring back the cat o' nine tails out of the museum and give him about 20 good ones down his back.

Domestic Violence : 11/4/2009
Richard Cox needs to be locked up for attempted murder. There is nothing wrong with his head. Barbados has to take doemstic violence very seriously. This should not be tolerated at any level. Women need to open their eyes and take Rhianna's plight of doemstic violence as an eye opener. For years men have beaten women in Barbados and gotten away with it, this nonsense has to stop. It is not a patriarchal society where women are subservient to men we are they equal. The government has to lay down some stringent laws that if a man hits a woman he goes to jail. I remember growing up a child where men would give women bare licks and that was acceptable. Times have change and we have come into a modern era, domestic violence should not be tolerated at any level. Where has Richard Cox been for the last 7 years? This is what one would called the "Slow hands of justice." His intentions were to kill his wife and that is called attempted murder. His threat "I told you that I am going to kill you" speaks to the validity of his intent to kill her. Why was he charged only with "maliciously inflicting serious bodily harm." Judges have to send a strong message to the men who beat their spouses. This is utter nonsense. Jersey Girl
