THE MINISTRY OF SPORTS will receive and make public an audit on all sporting facilities and grounds across the island in about two weeks.
According to Minister Esther Byer-Suckoo, this audit would assist her ministry on the way forward in developing sporting programmes for the communities.
She made the comments yesterday at the Democratic Labour Party luncheon at its headquarters, George Street, St Michael.
"We actually have a lot of land and a lot of buildings invested in sport in this country and we are not putting them to . . . adequate use. Some communities have gotten hardcourts and pavilions. But sadly . . . some of these are just lying waste because we haven't developed programmes around them," she said.
She said that money that has been invested in those facilities and land must be capitalised upon.
"We have to ensure that people at the community level can be involved in sports," she said. "If we are not careful, we can see people becoming idle."
"So we have done the facilities audit and I should be able to make it public in another couple of weeks, and with that audit we actually went through the communities in Barbados . . . to see where we have hardcourts . . . ; what about our pavilions, what do we have in them, what are they equipped to do [and so on]," she said.
Additionally, she noted that the ministry decided this coming financial year to install more lights and clean up many sports facilities. (TM)
TALK IS CHEAP : 11/7/2009
It's time the Honorable Minister really get in tune with the community people. Which pavilions has she visited. We at lammings are waiting still, a year on, for ugrades. There is a sink, in the kitchen area, which I believe was put there to facilitate a toddler. Since last year repairs were to be done and nothing has been so far. this pavilion was not built (actually) it was one of the prefab building which formerly housed St. Alban's School. It is not disabled friendly, it was only built to accomdate sports. We in this community have suffered for years under both administrations, and it seems that we are not on the map. Mrs. Minister, too much long talk takes you no where, and all we are hearing is talk talk talk. Camps were free, but those at Lammings still waiting for their monies from Easter, and still all the talk talk talk. Yet some caterers gone home with as much as $77,000.00 in their pockets from preparing lunches for the poor people's children who being fed on SPORTS, FREE EDUCATION (that they are not cherishing) FREE BUS RIDES ( and they riding all over the place, now you're having FREE PARENTING SEMINARS (I have no problem with that), but what you need to do, is to get out of St. George South and really mix with people and stop doing what you do when you attend meetings, speak and run. We are the people who need to talk to you, we are the people who don't really need all of this FREENESS, we need to be understood.
