Dress checks in full effect

ÔIf you are standing, I should not be able to see your knees.'

Published on: 9/3/2009.

by PHILLIPPE AIMEY

DESPITE THE WARNINGS, some students turned up at the Garrison Secondary School yesterday wearing short skirts, baggy pants, short socks, inappropriate hairstyles or excessive jewellery.

For ignoring the national dress code, the offenders were given suspension notices to take home.

Principal Matthew Farley told the DAILY NATION: "We have prepared a note which those persons that are in breach will receive. That note will indicate what is the breach and what the consequences are.

"In most cases that will include suspension for a specified period or as soon as the breach can be corrected. If the matter is fixed overnight, the student could return."

Farley said there was a significant improvement by the students, but reiterated that he would not compromise the standard for a few.

In an interview, Farley spoke sternly about the importance of parental support in enforcing the rules and also in making sure their children succeeded academically.

"We get support from parents but I think across the system, not only here, there is a scarcity of support when it comes to PTA presence. Most schools for the most part see 50 or 60 parents attending out of a school population of 1 000.

Supportive parents

"Research has shown that the children of parents who are really involved and are supportive of the school are the ones who excel no matter what school they attend and Barbados needs to work on this situation seriously," Farley said.

The school also welcomed 180 new students and Farley said he was pleased that the first form students came with a full understanding of what was expected in terms of dress code and more importantly behaviour.

He also highlighted the benefit of the Preparing New Students For Transition programme and said it was mainly that which helped them to settle quickly.

"What really helped our first form students was a two-day exercise organised between ourselves and the Barbados Light & Power last week, and that helped them to settle faster and get rid of those first day nerves."

In relation to his students taking full advantage of Government's free bus rides, Farley said that traditionally, students of the school had to rely on the Transport Board and much had not changed.

"About 90 per cent of our students have always depended on the Transport Board. We have about six to eight buses that service our school daily, bring students from as far as St Philip. So the free fares can only improve the situation and create a financial ease for some of them," he said.

Barbados vs Jamaica : 9/13/2009
These rules do exist in Jamaica. Recently at the start of the school year Jamaican students turned up to school with these same breaches and they were allowed to attend school. Wow. Thanks Barbados, rules are rules. Train these kids to adhere to them now or else you will have criminals and radicals on your hands.

Mr. Farley, Keep up the good standards of the school, we need this kind of attitude from the other principals of schools across the island. In the UK, the school children (Adults) look so untidy, as if they are coming from bashment, and going to school, that I'm ashamed to be seen anywhere near them. I went to Unique High School back in the 1950, and Miss Greendige is turning in her's grave. Because she were a strict Educator in the Dress code and academic. (The same condition in which I leave home, were the same on my way back home). You had to look respectable and outstanding because the reputation of the schools were in the public views. As long as a Female Teacher is present, then stand away from the students and let your eyes do their work. These are adults in (Children bodies), and hear their parents plotting dangerous situation, to bring you to your knees. Don't let it happen, God gave you a job to be done. DO IT. Be careful, but keep up the principles of the your school. God continue to Bless you. Heather.

Rules are in place for a reason. When they are broken, one must face the consequences. Follow the school dress code and there wouldn't be a problem. Well done Principal Farley !

Right on Principal Farley, don't let our barbadian children get out of hand like most of these uncouth children here in America that don't have a proper dress code or respect for their school and teachers. The baggy pants and pants underneath their bottoms (for the boys) and the mini skirts and tight pants (for the girls), is the norm here. Don't ever let our children become like that. Keep the heat on. Anne

Flashback : 9/9/2009
This brings me back to the day when the home economics teacher would go to each class with a ruler to ensure that the girls hems were no more than one ince above their knees. Therse girls are going to school to learn not to tantilize these fresh young boys and possibly older men (teachers). It is the parents responsibilty to ensure that their uniforms are made to standard. They also need to check their daughters and make sure that they are not storing 2nd sets of uniforms at friends houses or in their bags. I'm just thinking about the sneaky ways girls use to get over when I was in high school in bim!

Who bought this uniform to be fitted to the student? The parent obviously know about the dress code ,so why breach it.Who is the adult here.A lot of these students have illiterate parents, and they are preparing the children for disaster.I am 47 years old and my job has a dress code,so why cant the school ?These students bring themselves down and also the school, then u hear a parent saying there are singled out,for heavens sake stop putting your child in the spotlight with ignorance. This is a sad ,sad time, and i give my condolences to those kids who wont have a chance to grow up,they're already there .If you dont want to go with the code ,keep the child at home cause it certainly aint gonna have its own way with MR.FARLEY ,Somebody has to do it and the parents dont seem capable. However next incident like this Mr Farley should get some assistance from a female teacher.....All in all I give him credit he is not running a party house its an educational facility.......some o'dem parents want whipping.

I know that this may not be published after being viewed by the editor. Someone mentioned phobia, yes it is phobia, phobia of being manhandled and fondled by male teachers of yore, the "Good ole days" When the elders in the village and in authority had their way with the young girls and was told to shut up. Phobia because no one listened. Survey how many young girls left school pregnant by male teachers. This is serious. I am not saying that Mr. Farley is guilty of such crimes, I pray to God that he is not, but it did happen, and happened a lot, way too much, but we Bajans still live with our heads in the sand afraid to be talked about.

Dress checks : 9/8/2009
What memories this brings back of my school days. As I recall, some of the rules were hems had to be 1 inch above the floor when you knelt and your bloomers (aka puffed-leg panties)had to be made from the same material as your uniform, and socks turned down to the ankle. My one rebellion was to alter the size of my panama hat--I hated that wide brim--but now the joke is on me. Every summer I wear hats with 5" brings to protect my skin from the sun and in retrospect, I wish I hadn't been such a little know-it-all. I wish all the students a happy school year and charge them to wear their school uniforms with pride. Try to always look immaculate. Longpond.

Personally what Mr Farley is doing is really noble ..but on another side he comes over as one who always wants to be in the spotlight and when it does not fall on him ,he does or says something to draw attention ..so I don't get caught up in the hype but then again most of our"public figures "are like that..GO FIGURE.

All y'all got is bare talk. None of y'all woundn't have the audacity to express y'all concerns to Principal Farley face to face. If the girl in the picture hve a problem let her parents address the issue instead of all y'all chicken heads and yardfowls who don't have anything better to do than pull down a man really shows the lows Barbados has sunk to this era. Y'all does talk and hide behind computer screens and radio programs but when the school ask y'all to show up to PTA meetings to see how you can further benefit your child's education.. is like a ghost town..y'all no where to be seen.

So I must asked the qusetion . what differnce over all will it make if the ministry of education do show greater and more open support to the principal seen here. I must say though , this phoo graphic shot loks really funny. It might have been better, or may be more appropriate if a female teacher what doing the acessment It look really funny ahaha ah ah a

Principal Matthew Farley is to be commended and appreciated for having the courage of his convictions to enforce this badly needed dress code and other school Principals should take a page out of his book. Those parents who are not cooperating with Principal Farley's edict are only doing a dis-service to their children because each day missed from school is one less day of instructions. When children are dressed in uniforms, the focus on the designer outfits and the like is removed, and the children become more focused on the educational tasks at hand. To the writer (dresscheck) who said Mr. Farley needs a female to check the uniform length, Principal Farley is not doing anything inappropriate by checking the length of the uniform, why make something out of nothing? Barbados is NOT Boston. Principal Farley please continue to enforce your strict dress codes and those parents who continue to show disrespect by sending their children to school inappropriately dressed should be ashamed. What a bunch of bull... people you taking you are taking your eyes off of what is inportant. parents say they care about their children and have no problem giving them material things but you need to give them values and teach them self respect. you need to support the child but you also have to support the teachers. How important is education when the parents wont even attend the PTA meeting.

It definitely is a breach of propriety when an adult male touches a little girl to see if her obviously adequate skirt is of his standard. How is this little girl supposed to feel and why does this have to be pointed out? Wouldn't his time be better spent teaching the 3 Rs Reading, Writing, and 'rithmitic? Perhaps it's time to reconsider uniforms anyway. Many children in the world attend school wearing jeans and have excellent attitudes about learning. Educators need to be reaching the minds of their students not their skirts.

357yk : 9/7/2009
you are one stupid bajan, you ought to be glad to have a principal that concern with your children dress code, don't you all want your children to grow with the best education they can have, for instance here in NY most of the children who graduated from high school cannot read or hold adecent conversation, they are some of the most ignorant youn people i have come across since leaving Barbados, They have so much but so little, i hope that ignorant person and the others like her/him, understant what i am saying, charity begins at home and if you do not train your children, then let the professional do it for you and maybe your children will turn out to be better citizens. i live her in NY and many time i am ashame of the Bajans i encounter here, they are trying to be more American that remembering they are Bajans and will never beanything more that that.So please grow up and let the man do his job. let Barbados get back to being a nice place to live, at this time i sometime do not want to come home because all i see is the american ways aand it it no good it is tearing Barbados down.

I am one of those people who live overseas and I whole heartedly suport the checking of uniforms etc. I went to Secondary School in Barbados in the 70s at our school uniforms were checked at assembly every morning by both male and female teachers so this checking of uniform is not new. My children go to school in UK and their uniforms are also checked anyone wearing trainers, large earrings etc to school parents are contacted reminded about the dress code if student turn up on the second day dress the same the child is sent home. Parents also need to vigilant and be supportive of rules implemented by the school this applies to any school in any country because our children are the future and must understand rules are a necessary for society to survive.

Parents? : 9/6/2009
This should be the job of the parents, but since there are few parents, it is left to the school. We now have just mothers and fathers, but few parents, if there is no parenting going on, there can't be parents.

What's inappropriate : 9/6/2009
I see nothing wrong with the principal showing how far a student's uniform should go. Those that would oppose this, don't they go to see male doctors. We have to set standards in our schools for these young people. I see nothing inappropriate about this. It just goes to show how low the human mind can get. Let's do what is good and proper for our children who will be running our society after all of us have made our exit. What better place to begin but in the home and the schools. Thank God for teachers and principals.

Children Need Guidance : 9/6/2009
As, an Educator I can say that most of our children today are out of control from the 5 yr olds to the 17 yr olds. If discipline is not put in place we as Educators would have to run out of the schools. Mr. Farley continue to instilled discipline in your school and for the parents that have a problem with it. Teach your children how to respect others and authority. Without the proper guidance our children heading down the path of destruction and that is a sad thing. An Educator

Some of these posts are utter nonsense. No wonder we are losing this generation..how can you say 'kids are going to wear whatever they want regardless'..wait...who's the kid and whose the parent here. We have these idiot adults 'raising' children and have these same children believing that they are adults, when in truth they are clueless to what being an adult truly means. Mr Farley, keep checking those skirt lengths (2 ins below the knee);the baggy pant;the ridiculous hair styles; the excessive jewelry;the improper school shoes and socks. By the way, BajanQT...if your 'chile' can't differentiate between the measurement of her skirt length by her principal and being manhandled..YOU doing something real wrong..that 'chile' is already messed up(not the word i really wanted to use) for life.

It took some time to really look at this objectively. From most of these comments It looks like most people are suffering from some kind of phobia. I also think that most of the comments has strayed away from the issue at hand. To me the issue is Dress Code, please let us keep it at Dress Code and not what you preceive the principle to be doing or not doing. Some times it is said knowledge can be used for the good of man or the evil of man and I see most of these comments going to a place that is not helping the school children, the parents or the educational system in Barbados. Yes, we know that some our children in the school system needs more attention in terms of behaviour than others but do not sweep all with the same broom. We need to start loving more than hating. If we are going to come together as one nation for the children whether living in Barbados or some where else around the world we all have to support the efforts of our schools. Instead of being nagative show how you can support and improve at lease on initative in our island schools. I urge you to help build up not tear down. What Mr Farley is doing deserve support from us all. I am who I am today academically because of that said school system in Barbados. Please people let us find a way to help and show our support behind this initiative. We are all good people show that we care. You cannot compare North American school system standards with that of Barbados please keep that in mind. People are quick to talk about they rights also remember what about the rights of your brother, sister, neighbour, class mate. Let us build up not down. Thanks Principle Farley for your work with the Nation's Children. MBR, Toronto, Canada

How much voice do you have in the poor Black State of Mississippi? What have you done for any child in Barbados lately? Or, what have you done for Barbados in your life. All of you who resented the discipline and good upbrining from your ignorant parents, are you better off? Now, are your children better off because of your neglect that you call better treatment? Tell Me.

Culture : 9/6/2009
We so much want to be like the other countries and for those who live abroad and are so upset with the male checking the length of the uniform, I say to you: It is no wonder that you are so miserable and your children don't obey you. This is culture, this is not abuse, or a male teacher out of line. This is culture, study what culture is. You live elsewhere, cann't talk the language, living like a second class citizen, and then knocking your culture. Those children are the direct results of who we are and home. If you really care, send back some money to your school to buy books, lunch, and or paint. Better still plan your vacation for the summer and get a group of students together and go and clean around your old school, and get you picture in the papers North American.

Great Job Mr. Farley : 9/6/2009
Mr. Farley, GREAT JOB. The time has come for School PRINCIPLES with the help & support of The Ministry of Education as well as the PARENTS & GUARDIANS to take a stand on behavior, dress code and attendance in our schools. Children develop into what they see around them. I’ve read the comments made thus far; if these persons are really honest with themselves they should be glad that Mr. Farley is doing what he is at this time to ensure that WEST INDIAN school children do not turn out like those in other countries where you cannot even give your child “THE LOOK” for fear that you may be charged for child abuse. If a child does not like a decision made by a parent or guardian that child can report you to the teacher or authority in order to get even or get his or her own way. Is that what we want in the Caribbean? No control of our children? Children ruling the adults? Summer last year while in Toronto, there was talk about schools implementing a uniform system, something which we have always had in the Caribbean. Why? To identify school children from lawless gang members who infiltrated the school grounds to commit criminal acts. Are we going to wait until things get to that point to do something positive? Folks, take our minds out of the gutter. Let teachers be teachers. Let them do their jobs. In fact, parents you need to behave like parents and help make the teachers jobs easier. Some of you adults/guardians need to look at your own dress code and behavior and you will see why some of our children are so confused…… DP

All this lot a talk about Mr farley should have designsted a female to check the length of the pupil's skirt is a lot of crap! Why attribute ulterior motives to an innocent inspection, done by an honourable Principal, who is trying to return some normalcy to the school dress code which has been sadly lacking in most of the Secondary Schools in Barbados. Just think what a simple thing like being appropriately dress could mean for these school girls, when you factor in, among other things, the ZR Van culture, and those who would seek to exploit scantily dressed school girls. Keep up the good work Mr Farley, most of us are with you in this endeavour.

Uniform Dress codes : 9/5/2009
Dress codes are great, the girls wear their uniform so short that you can see they underwear. It is unaccepable. My daughter went to catholic school where they had a dress code, while in school it was adhered to, but as soon as school was dismissed the skirts were hitched up to a shorter lenght, they were biker shorts underneath.Due to the fact that society's way of thinking,it would be more astute to look at the k1ds as they walk into school and you would see who is complying and who is not without touching them. As easy as that. If your daughter had a cardiac arrest, what would you all say if he didn't resusitate her, because he is male.

There will always be resistance to change but change is part of life. If there is a uniform policy then it should be adhered to by parents. I do not blame the children, because it is the parent(s) who set the rules. If there are no rules at home then how can these CHILDREN adhere to extrenal rules. Children learn what they live and live what they learn. It is all about discipline. Mr Farley is right to enforce these rules. Finally, as it seems that there are objections to Mr Farley checking himself, especially for female students, then there should be a female. If some people can only comment on what they see as 'inappropriate' touching and nothing else, then they need to deal with THEIR personal issues.

Nonsense : 9/3/2009
Girls and boys, men and women grow up in the same world and have to interact together. If the girl had fainted or had been injured and could not walk, it is more that likely that a male would have to have significant bodily contact with her. What are we teaching our children when a male teacher cannot manually check the length of a skirt. If he were holding it up, then I might raise an eyebrow. I remember the outcry last year when it was mentioned that he was using a ruler to measure and it was said that he was going overboard and should just do exactly what he is doing in the picture. How can you please people? In a public place, a male principal should be able to assess the length of a female student's skirt. If he were taking down the hem in his office, well, I agree that would be a different matter. We need to stop being silly. Principals are frustrated by all the crap they hear about their efforts from stupid onlookers, parents and sometimes, officials higher up who should know better........NONSENSE.

Psychotic

: 9/3/2009
I can understand the concerns of checks being carried out by a female. One can eyeball the length and if further measurements are needed call the female teacher in. At my school we give students a paper ruler of the desired length so that they know the expected length above the knee that their clothes can be. It nevre fails but some t=do come to school with clothes much longer and try to pull them down to the length. We are constantly fighting that battle. It doesn't help that they wear whatever. Good for schools to enforce the rules now for parents to follow up and support the school. As for PTA We have notice that as the student moves up in grade levels the support of parents in the PTA goes down. BTW I am a female teacher at the middle school level.

No, No, Hands Off! : 9/3/2009
First thing I thought as well without seeing any of the comments. He is definitely out of place to put his hands on a female student regardless of his intentions. From any perspective, male or female, it looks wrong and it is wrong and deserves an official reprimand. We should think first before we do things such as seen above. Even if the teacher were a female, in my mind that is still wrong. Commonsense dictates that if you have a dresscode you should be able to look at a student in uniform and decide in your mind if it is too short. If it were above the student's knees you would know that it is in breach of the code. If you start wrong, you can only end wrong and there is definitely cause given above for criticism.

see how you people put indifferent thoughts into peoples mind, he is principal in full view showing or just demostrating an incident and wunna gone wid wunna dirty thoughts already, that is why the world is so confused and the children are the way they are, thanks to some parents. i bet if that was handsoff, baje in ny or c holligan, you would have a lawyer in his office looking fuh doe, sometimes parents are the children worst enemies. yours minds need to be filtered, baje in toronto

Oh just quit the silly stuff readers. You don't think a Principal who only stands for and want the best for all students of the country, will be so stupid to go and touch a female student without thinking. Quit thinking small, worry about the discipline that our children have lost.

Dress checks : 9/3/2009
Here in Mississauga Ontario a couple of Catholic schools have banned girls from wearing kilts for the same reason some of these kilts were so short they left nothing for the imagination. there is good reason to keep this in check. But hands off for your protection.

Surely Principal Matthew Farley knows better than to put is hands on a female student. If the skirts are supposed to be below the knees this can be done without the hands on method. You have a reputation to protect Sir.

HANDSOFF.

Inappropriate Touching : 9/3/2009
Before even reading these comments, that was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the pic. I certainly hope he's not touching this girl; this is a job for a female teacher. These so-called educated people just don't get it. That is totally inappropriate. -- Bajan in NY

Mr Farley please give this assignment to one of your female teachers please!! Yo are a good man with great and noble intentions but looking at this photo I can see how one of your enemies can start something that you would not be able to control. People these days are not as nice as in our days. Keep the Good work up. These kids will look back twenty years from now and sing your praises. I am 57 years old now and can still remember at hygene inspection Mr F.H. Barker sending me down to Mrs Alleyne the School's janetor to help me clean the dirt from around my neck and from under my nails. It was emberressing at the time but It trned me into one of the cleanest men around in these UNITED STATES TODAY. Good Luck to the headmaster.

Dress Code Checks : 9/3/2009
I agree totally with C Holligan. Checks should be carried out by a female with Mr Farley overseeing if he so desires with female pupils. These days there is no smoke without fire and even the innocent looking cannot be trusted. His hands should not be on the girl's knees. He should have a ruler with the appropriate marking displayed so that taller and shorter girls' hems are accommodated. This ought to be looked into as a matter of urgency.

Dress Checks in Full Effect : 9/3/2009
I have no problem with enforcing a dress code. What is wrong however and frankly, more than a little disturbing, is the image of Mr. Farley measuring the skirt length of a female student. We live in some strange times. To protect both Mr. Farley and the student surely this should have been carried out by a female teacher?

C. Holligan
