St Philip school marks 55th year

Published on: 2/10/2010.

MAKING HIS PASSION for teaching known, Minister of Education Ronald Jones urged students of Princess Margaret Secondary School to shun negative influences and gird themselves with discipline at the school's 55th Founders' Day Service yesterday.

The minister touched on a wide range of issues aimed at inspiring the youngsters to see themselves as being able to make a difference.

"Do nothing to affect your school. Use positive examples, the negatives are many . . . Education has become a right and not a privilege and one of the things that undergird that opportunity is discipline," said Jones, a former teacher of 27 years' experience.

"It is the view of many today that students are not taking full advantage of this free secondary education. What can be done to curb this trend? The answer is discipline. Not the discipline which may be imposed on you from external sources, but discipline within you, which will dictate your behaviours."

He also encouraged the teachers "to make the children proud of you".

The Founders' Day service started with a march past and salute by the Cadets. It was punctuated with award presentations to teachers and ancillary staff, singing - special mention must be made of student Azizi Clarke who did a moving rendition of Christina Aguilera's Beautiful - and dance exhibitions by the Princess Margaret Dance Troupe and teachers of the school.

Students also heard Jones announce that funds had been secured for the long-awaited hard courts, which principal Dr Wismore Butcher had earlier said was critical to the sporting life. of the school.

The minister also promised to provide more classrooms.

The highlight of the service came when the cadets marched through the surrounding district to show their appreciation to the community. (JS)

To former Honor student.
"Dear Honor Student",The fact that Princess Margaret was invited ,accepted, and officially "cut the ribbon" to "open" the school....It is only fitting that the school, of which I too am a former student, proud former student (to boot), lbear her name.I am by no stretch of the imagination a monarchist, but I have NOOO problem leaving well enough alone. That school has graduated many gifted scholars,we "St.Philip people" are proud of our school, and would request that the name be left intact.
I suppose he /she will be asking the judicial system ,to abolish the attire the judicial system uses as well ,(if in fact we want to escape the British tradition). Congrats PMSS... we love you ....Happy Fifty Fith

Congratulations to my old school. Please, don't change the name. Would you change " Queen's College"? All that I am is connected to PRINCESS MARGARET HIGH SCHOOL.

What's in a name anyway : 2/10/2010
Would renaming the school make it a better school? Would it make life any easier for the pupils and staff? While you are at it why don't you rename the King George V Memorial park or better still, rename the island, after all, Barbados was British for over 300 years with that old name. Cheeeese man! what's next eh?

Princess margaret visited barbados in 1955 and the Princess Margaret school is perhaps the only reminder of that visit. As an eleven year old Wesley Hall boy who walked to the Garrison to greet the princess, and received a coke and a rock cake for my effort, I can also recall the fireworks from the Royal Yacht Britannia which was anchorred in Carlisle Bay. I am no monarchist and would dearly love to see Barbados become a republic but memories are memories.

I have always wondered why this High School was named Princess Margaret.Couldn,t it be named "The Grantley Adams,The E.D.Mottley or some other high profiled Barbadian? How about renaming it The Garfield Sobers or The Malcolm Marshall High School.Thi would be very Barbadian.I lived in England for many years and I am yet to see any landmark named after a Barbadian famous or otherwise.Hurricane Janet was 55 years ago.Let,s move on and upward!
