STRINGENT SECURITY MEASURES at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) morgue would have made it improbable for Reynzill Lorenzo Scantlebury to escape in the manner he claimed he did, the institution's management says.
A release sent to media houses by the hospital's communications specialist Katrinah Best stated that chief executive officer (CEO) Dr Dexter James met with staff responsible for the management of the morgue yesterday morning.
"Arising out of these discussions, he reiterated the improbability of Mr Reynzill Lorenzo Scantlebury being able to release himself from the morgue following an alleged pronouncement of death.
"The CEO clarified that there are stringent security arrangements for managing the morgue with the use of closed circuit television," the statement said.
It went on to say that acting director of support services Louise Bobb discussed in "extensive detail" the procedure for managing the morgue which in their view refuted any statements that Mr Scantlebury walked out of the morgue.
This procedure, as outlined by Bobb, is as follows:
* Once the patient is certified dead by the doctor, the body is prepared for transportation to the morgue.
* The chin is secured, the toes are tied together and tagged before being placed in a shroud/zipper bag.
"It would be difficult for someone to break the material [of the shroud/bag]," stated Bobb.
It continued:
* Bodies are placed in the morgue drawer feet first. The height of the drawer measures two feet.
"It would be very difficult to manoeuvre in those quarters, based on the dimensions," Bobb added.
She noted that access to the morgue was controlled by an electronic security system and that no diapers were placed on the deceased taken to the morgue. The hospital, while admitting that Scantlebury was seen in the Accident & Emergency Department on September 20 at 4:57 p.m., maintained that he was not a patient of the hospital because he was not admitted to a ward. They said he was released on September 21 at 4:30.
Scantlebury, 46, a car washer, claimed he woke up in the hospital's morgue after suffering an epileptic seizure.
In an interview in the last SATURDAY SUN, he alleged that he was inside a "dark room" with a big refrigerator with drawers.
"I had just come out of one of the same drawers . . . ," he said.
In that article, Best said the hospital did not have a Reynzill Scantlebury on record, but did have a record of another man who had died, also a Scantlebury, whose first name was close to his and who had Lorenzo as a middle name. (MR)

To bajan brit : 1) it is very possible to be seen at a hospital and not be admitted to a ward. The two are not synonymous. All it means is that he came in as a patient on the 20th, was seen, worked up and based on the results of the investigations was assessed as not needing further treatment and as such, was discharged home. 2) 2007 is not 2009. Clearly the close circuit cameras and new security measures are a recent installment. This sensational story has run its course. Lets move on now please.
Escape from Morgue : 11/5/2009
This man is bonkers. How indeed was he released from a closed refrigerator? We know it is impossible. He is just making a fool of himself. He had his one second of fame it is time to move on to the next story. Joker

You're so funny!! LAMO!! Marilyn Ross-tbeur
Escape from morgue unlikely : 11/5/2009
Why don't the QEH authoraties come clean. how come Mr Scantlebury attended casuality on the 20th discharged on the 21st and was still not admitted? also how come you have all of this security and yet still about two years ago a man was able to have sex with a dead woman in the same morgue? stop the cover-up and come clean please!!!!!
QEH : 11/5/2009
wait a minute, you trying to tell me that this man was in the ER from September 20 at 4:57 p.m till September 21 at 4:30. Either 12 or 24 hours because of a seizure. Doing what? dying or lying? Either way, this is a big joke and I laughing my belly full.
DAMAGE CONTROL : 11/5/2009
I have alot of questions? but Mr. Scantlebury, I'm not going to count you out just yet. like i said yesterday, security or no security, i wish (base on what you said) when you got off that tray.. you got mad cause the tech. didn't give you the blanket secondary to your coldnest. you DID,T throw the tag @ him. you should have keep that tag... very important. #2. What happened to that tech?. #3 here @ my hosp. the body goes to the morgue with only a gown on, place in a zipper bag.. 1 tag with pt. information(name, account # etc. on it), this is tie to 1 finger & 1 great toe. then outside of the zipper bag has the same info.when we get to the morgue, the body is placed on pullout drawer put the body in,closed the draw, then a tag with the same info. is put outside on the drawer, so that the undertaker will know. #4 what happen to the woman that you met on your way home, you told her you was hungery.. #5 who/what body did the undertaker took fr. the morgue on day #2 of that death.. the one with the same name.. #6 what happen to your records. The hosp. is going to take care of themselves, you need someone on your side. and the whole world is made with you but you know, these things are not impossible. the hosp have a lot of explaining.

To I Love My People : 11/5/2009
How do you mean "if you go, please put (you) in the same cold box"? Like you either know or got something that most of the world looking for. If that is the case then, you yourself would be way more of an attraction than QEH could ever be!!!!
Please Stop it Barbadians : 11/5/2009
Enough is enough. Please! I know we all love a scandal and excitement but this is ridiculous. From the time I read the story I knew it could not be true. Have any of you ever visited the morgue? well I had to in order to view a relative's body. First of all we could not just walk in. the door was locked and we had to be let in. I saw the trays and it is impossible for anyone to get out of them in any case he would have been frozen or partly frozen unless the refrigeration was faulty. Let us put this to rest by asking the gentleman to come back in so that we can put him back in following the procedures for preparation of the body and take him back out a week later

Escape from morgue : 11/5/2009
What does the video show? I cannot give this story any credit. I am sorry, here in Toronto I have to bundle up today Nov/05 at 4 degrees celsius which is about 39 degrees Fahrenheit and i am moving.how can Mr Scantlebury lay around at 32degrees/0.0 degrees celsius naked and not suffer skin damage? Within 30 minutes his body will be shivering, he will be incoherent.I am sorry Sir but there have to be more than this.
Harry Houdini Reynzil Scantleberry : 11/5/2009
I tell yuh Houdini aint dead! Yuh can imagin de amount a people who wud catch plane and come for a "night in de morgue?" If a fridge could raise the dead Pfizer will be out a bizness in a jiffy. When all is sed and dun, somebody at the horsepital shud get fire and Reynzil shud get two lashes for trying to pull a fast one. How you mean you talk to a technician? yuh aint know a duppy when yuh see one
: 11/5/2009
Snuffybrowne, if you were the technician eating in the morgue would you come forward?
Ressurected and Complaining : 11/5/2009
We stll talking bout this? If I was dead and wake up living I would fall on my knees and praise the Lord. Next I would run down by the nearest shop and buy a ham cutter and a Ju-c, then go to Brownes Beach and have a sea bath and come out the sea and call the Rt Bishop Granville and spend some time on the mourning ground. Lastly I would flush all the viagra pills cause I is a new man now and Mr.Bob must be reinvigorated and excited to be hitting mid day again. I would do all these things and more but never was I going to complain that I was dead and now I am alive. You just cant sastisfy a Bajan. By the way when or if I go, please put me in the same cold box. I need a second chance too. As a matter of fact QEH should make it a tourist attraction. It might not be a bleeding statue...but it is a fridge that wakes up the dead and there is bound to be pilgrims that we can find to pilgrimage cross the river to the great institution called QEH.
: 11/5/2009
Still more covering up by the QEH administration. Why all this security for the morgue, and none for the other parts of the hospital, where one can walk off the streets and easily go onto the upper floors at will. Something smells fishey here. Bajanjoy, N.Y.
Questions To QEH : 11/5/2009
Were the two Mr. Scantleburys in the hospital at the same time? Does the closed circuit television record the events that take place in the morgue? If so, what is the maximum time the recorded material is held? Is it possible for a "live" person who is in one of the drawers to use momentum to open the drawer? Is exiting the morgue also controlled by the electronic system? Is there any material placed to cover the private parts of bodies placed in the morgue? Is it customary procedure to put diapers on persons who are unresponsive while awaiting treatment at the hospital? Are the hands untied when the body is placed into the shroud/zipper bag? If so, can a person who is placed into the shroud/zipper bag open the shroud/zipper bag from the inside? What constitutes a "patient"? Must the person be admitted to a ward before they are considered a patient? Does the above procedure concerning preparation and transfer of the body also apply to persons who died prior to being admitted to a ward, for example, if they "die" in route to the hospital?
dead man walking : 11/5/2009
does not make sense if Mr.Scantlebury was admitted to the emergency room obviously he was a patient of the QEH.
Escape from Morgue? : 11/5/2009
I have been following with interest the story of Mr. Scantlebury and the QEH responses. Now that I read there are security cameras can't the QEH put this matter to rest with appropriate footage of the area during the time that Mr. Scantlebury indicated he alledgedly escaped? Or is the security minus recording equipment? It seems to me that some one at QEH spoke out of turn without having all the facts at hand. If this was done this story would not have been given the 'legs' to continue as it is. When there is inconsistency everyone runs wild with speculation. The procedures identified by Louise Bobb depicts what is on paper but we all know that there are exceptions to the rule and when given opportunity without supervision workers can take shortcuts. Let us hope that QEH can come up with the concrete evidence to refute this claim 'once and for all'
Independent investigation urgently required : 11/5/2009
Everyday the hospital feeds us a little pinch more, but it is still too flimsy. The admission now comes that Scantlebury was at A&E suggesting therefore he has some sort of medical record. My questions are: what other information is on that file to verify or negate Scantlebury's claim? What treatment did Scantlebury receive between Sept 20th and 21st? How did Scantlebury arrive at the hospital? Was he placed in a pamper at A&E or before. Was he erroneously tagged and sent off to the morgue? Was the refrigerator working or malfunctioning as it regularly does? Was the camera in working order? Was it functioning or turned off to facilitate the man in the white coat's meal time in a mortuary? Was the security access active or inactive to facilitate the man in the white coat sneaking in there to eat? Who has viewed the tape for the timeline? Are you looking at the correct period since Mr Scantlebury spoke of having left and collapsing a second time? Already a little bit of credibility seems to be in Scantlebury's story. Let's see how much more there is and how much is a figment of his imagination. By the way Ms Best, the term 'they say' is not business language. Why not say 'the notes revealed.'To Ms Bobb, every buisness place is guided by rules and policies that some employees believe should be always ignored until they are caught. This seems to be one such case. Retired
Bajan in NY : 11/5/2009
The QEH always does that, denies, denies, denies.
: 11/5/2009
Secure? I wonder if this is the same security that allowed a man to get in and have intercourse with some of the bodies sometime last year.
: 11/5/2009
OK. This article states that Mr scantlebury was admitted to the QEH on the 20 September at 4.57pm and released on 21 September at 4.30, was this am or pm? Where was Mr Scantlebury during these hours since it states that he was not admitted to a ward sitting in A&E? Quite frankly, I think that the hospital PR/spokesperson is doing a terrible job on this one. As soon as this story broke they should have catalogued accurately the position regarding Mr Scantlebury's 'admission(s)'. The initial misinformation from the QEH does not help. I have no media training but I would have thought that the reporter would have sought clarification on some very basis details. I think I read somewhere that Mr Scantlebury went to the hospital twice. Has the hospital confirm or deny this. CONCERNED and BAFFLED
QEH: Escape from morgue 'unlikely' : 11/5/2009
This problem can be solved in a heartbeat. The guy said that when he woke up he asked the technician for a blanket. So why doesn't that same technician come out and confirm or deny the story and set the record straight. All this dilly dallying is not called for - it is just making everybody look like lunatics.
Escape from morgue : 11/5/2009
After reading the details and procedures put in place for deceased persons, this guy seems to be out to lunch. It looks like his story doesn't hold water.
hmm : 11/5/2009
Hmmmmm...so where was he then????Mr Scantlebury what refrigerator did you come out of if not hospital??
Something wrong : 11/5/2009
this is a very sad siuation here, can we get to the real matter: Who really died at the Hospital? Who took the body of the same name dead man? Who got the wrong Body? someone must tell us, Why was this man sees wearing those things they ban your hand with? Who was the person that he spoke to the day he walk away from the Hospital? All these questions should be asked and this should help solve some of the confussion, that the authorities at the Hospital seem not to be able to answer> They do things sometimes that are questionable: Like seend you a final notice treatening you for funds you owe, but they never send the amount so you you would know what you owe. Its time to get your act together, I thought things were better since a change of government. What does the Minister have to say about this matter.
Is he DEAD or ALIVE??? : 11/5/2009
I knew there was something very fishy about your story Mr. Scantlebury.. because how the hell can you be pronounced dead by a doctor and sent to the morgue in just a pamper? I know that bodies are prepared better than that.. Come on Mr. Scantlebury get real. Wake up from the dead for one more time.. Did the Morgue Technician change jobs? How come he did not come forward to back up your story??Never once I read where you said you had to unplug all possible holes which were plugged in preparation for your morgue trip. HELLO???? You should be made subject to a lie detector test or find the Morgue Technician!! Simple. CURIOUS BAJAN IN BOSTON..
qeh on claim : 11/5/2009
Some people love an opportunity where they can discredit Insitution/people, we enjoy doing these things without getting the real facts about anything, we must have something to talk about regardless of the truth. Any right thinking person/s will know that before they can beleive/doubt things they will have to hear both side and the make a judgement on what was said/done and if the truth was related by the person involved, but from listening to the person acusing the QEH one would have to think.
: 11/5/2009
If those silly people had made this statement in the first place they would not look so stupid, but they shoot their mouths off in such an unprofessional way before investigating. The man probably went into a coma and saw all these amazing things as he thought he was going to die. Give it up.

ESCAPE FROM MORQUE : 11/5/2009
All sorts of information is now coming out of the QEH yet we were told when the story broke by Mr. Dexter James CEO that this story was not true and no such thing happened. Damage control should now be a number one priority by all staff at the QEH as the new boss certainly seems to lack direction. Question was there a mix up in patients! Born Bajan.
