Pest to pay for bottle attack

Published on: 9/12/2009.

A WOMAN who was hit in the face because she did not take kindly to Dwayne Omar Anthony Brathwaite dancing behind her will carry the scars from his bottle attack, but will also get compensation from him.

Brathwaite, a 21-year-old labourer of Harpers Land, Sargeants Village, Christ Church, was accused of wounding Debbie Douglas and Kerie Forde on November 4, 2006.

He returned to the District "A" Magistrates' Court yesterday for the conclusion of his case.

Magistrate Pamela Beckles said she had no doubt that the two women recognised Brathwaite as their attacker.

"I don't think it was a case of mistaken identity," she said.

The magistrate ordered Brathwaite to pay Douglas $2 000 in compensation and Forde $1 000 in compensation - by December 11.

During the trial, Forde told the court she and her friend Debbie were in the Boatyard nightclub. She was dancing with a male friend in an area near some steps when she noticed a man was in front of her.

People were also pointing at her friend and she then saw that man was dancing behind her friend. That man was Brathwaite.

"I was concerned 'cause Debbie appeared not to welcome it and I asked [my friend] to speak to Brathwaite," she said.

"I heard Debbie ask [Brathwaite] where he came from. [Brathwaite] then walked away and [her male friend] walked over and spoke with [Brathwaite] and asked him to leave Debbie alone," the witness added.

Forde further told the court that five minutes later she felt someone approach her, and, out of the corner of her eye, she saw that person come next to her.

"I put up my right hand to cover my face and I got hit on my elbow with a beer bottle. When I looked to my right I saw [Brathwaite] holding a bottle," she said.

"[Brathwaite] then hit Debbie with the same bottle he hit me with and said, 'Don't send nobody to tell me things.'"

We need real Justices. : 9/12/2009
The Peoples`s Court here would have done a better job in compensating the victims. There`s a lot of talk about new court building, but it will be the same people running the show. Brooklyn.

Along with compensation, Brathwaite needed some jail time to allow him time to reflect on christian feelings and respect. A waste of court's time when he knew without a doubt that he was guilty and which the court accurately found him to be. Forde is lucky she didn't lose an eye.

It is ironic if he had stole money he would be locked up. At th end of the day Brathwaite has intentionally wounded not one but two people and not given a custodial sentence. This man is very dangerous why? because he was approach and told the females were uncomfortable with him any law abiding person would have heeded the advice and find other females to dance with, but his pride was more important to him. Unfortunately he will do this again and the other female he gets angry with may not be so lucky I think it was a mistake that he was allowed off so lightly as a matter of fact he needs a psychiatric assessment to me he is displaying psychopathic symptoms which needs to be dealt with sooner rather than later

Pest to pay, Compensation is appropriate but this is a joke. Where is the jail time? where is the deterrent? others will see this as nothing to deter them from committing acts like this. The courts have to send a message.

People who retaliate to violence becauze they're ignored don't fit to be called humans, animals don't bhave this way most people can only resort to violence when they can't deal with rejection, f laws were enforce on the island people would probably show more respect for others and the enviroment, what we need is people in authority with real gutz to deal with situations that affect society.

Miss Douglas should sued Brathwaite for pain and suffering. The money the judge imposed on Brathwaite is nothing. The judge should have imposed a sentence of at least one year in jail with hard labor and compenstion of six thousand dollards for pain, suffering and the scar that is left in her face for the rest of her life. A lesson has to be learnt that others will follow.

What Compensation? : 9/12/2009
Barbados needs to come into the 21st century. An attack on the face, where a scare will now be for the rest of that woman's life and all the perpetrator is asked to pay is $2000.00. This is really laughable. This guy should be made to pay thousands of dollars and if he cannot, then he should be made to pay her half of his salary for 10 years. Unless and until we get serious with these types of crime, people will continue to act in the callous and indifferent manner knowing that they will only receive a slap on the wrist and a kiss on the cheeks.

This appears to be the norm to settle disputes, knives, bottles, beatings - this is not the way decent human beings behave. Couldn't Brathwaite tell the woman politely what he wanted to tell her. It is obvious his actions were not welcome in the first place. Some men need to read between the lines, it is not ALL women that like your advances - chose the women that are giving you a green light and leave the ones that are not interested in you alone. You all need to get a grip on life itself - you cannot just hit on any woman your eyes desire, they're not all interested in you or the games a lot of you play. Some men need to find out how to romance and treat women.

Why a simple case like this has to take three long years to be heard and the victims of this vicious attack gets $2000 and $1000, is this the end of the case or this all that`s reported. NY
