DECIDING TO HAVE an abortion as a means of dealing with an unwanted pregnancy is more popular among older teens than it is with their younger counterparts.
This finding was disclosed by Dr Felix Gittens, senior health officer in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) yesterday as a part of the ninth annual Professor E. R. Walrond Symposium.
His research, which focused on a four-year review of teenage pregnancy at the island's main hospital, showed that teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 preferred to terminate their pregnancies, while those in the 13 to 15 age group are more likely to keep the child.
Overall, the number of abortions recorded at the QEH have increased during the four-year period, and usually fell in the range of 15 to 24 per cent.
The teen pregnancy rate has remained constant, between 15 to 16 per cent, which according to Gittens, is high as it relates to other developing countries.
He believed that an increased educational effort, both in the home and in schools, could help to reverse the trend.
"We find that there are a lot of teens having sex who believe that certain sexual positions or drinking hot Guinness can actually prevent pregnancy. Sex education classes in schools could help to teach children about how to prevent pregnancy," he said. (LW)

Think about it! some will say,it's not reality but the best prevention to pregnancy is abstinence. How many women do you know that got pregnant from NOT doing it? I rest my case.

I went to high school in St.Vincent and the Grenadines, when our teachers heard that we were dating, They would send to the counselor, she would educate us privately and tell us where to go and get contraceptives. We were made to watch a video on the subject. A very good video "Silent Scream" I guarantee they would have a change of heart. Let's stop the flow of innocent blood. Orpha (vinbarmecan)

Why are these teens having sex so early? Where are their parents? I thought parents had an obligation to protect their children, seems to me like these teens don’t have parents to provide them with proper guidance. I hope the fathers of these children are stepping up to provide some kind of financial support and the Government is not footing the bill for these irresponsible young people. Teaching sex education in schools will lead to more children having sex at an early age. Parents should be the one to teach their teenagers about sex education and abstinence, it is the proactive way to prevent teen pregnancy.

Backivyboy, I went to school at springer and I know for sure that we were taught sex ed for like 4 yrs in school, i cannot comment on what the other schools teaches but mine did, i really dont think that it is really a dirty secret... it is just a person personal choice, me, I am in the middle because my flesh says that if you will not be able to care for your child, than why let it be a problem to society, and a tax burden and why not just use protection, but then my christian side comes in and say that it is wrong, thou shall not kill, so it is hard for me, but for me to be honest i will leave it be down to that person who has to care for the child. I do agree that how ever the church dont talk about it too much, just like you say it is taboo, but just because it is taboo, does not give us the right not to address it. When I was in school my friends from the mixed school got abortionall the time back then that what we call carrying ya child in ya knees... It was not a big thing you stay home fromschool the friday and be back on monday...not right but it happens.

Oh my goodness, this is unbelievably disgraceful. for a nation that prides it self as a CHRISTAN SOCIETY. where are the bible thumping preachers? what do they have to say about this? Is sex education taught in school? How can this be allowed to go on? How can our Daughters/Sons be so ignorant on the subject of SEX? What are we going to do about this disgrace. We the parents, churches, schools, have to shoulder the blame, Because of the hush hush way we treat the subject. So the street becomes the class room for this taboo subject.as a result we are faced with this big dirty secret.

These young girls do need to be educated. They have all their life ahead of them to have children, why rush into it when it is a life-long commitment and responsibility being a mother. In addition, it is best for the child to have a stable family environment with father and mother and it is very unlikely if teenage fathers are going to stick around to raise children. The numbers are questionable for older fathers rearing their children now. My advice would be "take your time girls and live life first, there's plenty of time for a family later in life".
