NUPW: Stops those threats

NUPW President Walter Maloney. (FP)

Published on: 7/3/2009.

STOP THREATENING immigration officers!

The National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) made this appeal yesterday as public debate over the deportation of Guyanese immigrants continued.

"We have been getting calls from immigration officers who say people are threatening them, calling them at their homes and threatening them," president of the union Walter Maloney told the WEEKEND NATION.

"Let it be known that the NUPW will not sit idly by and allow any public servant and his or her families to have their lives put in jeopardy because of the recklessness and the uninformed position of persons in this society who should know better."

Maloney reported that immigration and, to a lesser extent, Customs officers had come under fire in recent weeks for the circumstances surrounding the deportation of illegal immigrants.

He said immigration officers had been accused of launching nocturnal raids on homes, knocking down doors and "snatching up people".

"However, not one shred of evidence has been produced showing that public servants acted inhumanely, or illegitimately towards our brothers and sisters from the Caribbean," he said.

"It is very unfortunate that persons who should know better are trying to discredit the work of public servants, who have been going about their legitimate business."

Prime Minister David Thompson has said that public officials would be disciplined appropriately if evidence was produced that they were ill-treating Guyanese and other immigrants.

Thompson announced on Wednesday at a Press conference in Guyana plans to set up an independent review panel to investigate claims of ill-treatment by immigration authorities. (TY)

Hey Bat Man, why dont you use your bat mobile and go after the former regime to find out what happened to all the missing monies the auditor general spoke of. While you're at it head to the islands and to SWZ and try to obtain info on where the public's money has gone to and under whose names. Distraction? Go to Switzerland!

Keep doing your job! : 7/3/2009
Bajans abroad are monitoring everything going on in our island and we are not please with the illegal situation. How dare them threaten our workers who have a job to do.You made the choice to enter Barbados illegally. Now deal with the consequences. My native bajans, don't fear "outsiders" . Our caribbean brothers and sisters are like us but when they cross the line as illegals and giving us grief in our homeland, that's another story.

Threats : 7/3/2009
Just do your job immigration officials and public servants. Don't allow anyone to intimidate or bully you.Just know this, that you were in your island working peacefully before they came. Which of you call them into Barbados illegally? None right? well you have the support of the people of Barbados. As long as every "I" is dotted and every "T" crossed, don't worry with them.Do your job and let them know that you are home . They must find theirs. Barbados can be theirs when they have the appropiate documentation. People are something else! stand your ground.

No surrender ! : 7/3/2009
Whatever it takes we will take our country back. This is exactly the reason why we must enforce the immigration laws & not become laxed no matter the outcome. The illegal immigrants are on the run & are using every tactic to stay illegally in our country. I hope the Immigration Department & the RBPF have not lost their resolve due to these threats,in fact this is just the reason to re-double their efforts.

DLP Fooling the people : 7/3/2009
NOBODY IS TRYING TO GET INTO BARBADOS, NEITHER GUYANESE, TOURIST OR CAPITAL. THIS DEPORTATION ISSUE IS MERELY A DISTRACTION TACTIC TO GET BARBADIANS NOT TO FOCUS ON THE ECONOMY, WHICH IS IN A WORST SHAPE THAN IT WAS IN 1991-1994. BARBADIANS WAKE UP - WHERE IS YOUR SENSE OF OUTRAGE? YOU ARE BEING HOOD-WINKED. RESCUE YOUR COUNTRY AND PUT IT BACK ON TRACK BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!!!

Why is it that lawlessnes and illegal activity always seem favourable and the thing to do in Barbados. The Prime Minister had said that all illegals had 6 months to handle business or face deportation. We all know why people are running from Guyana. Their Gov't should be the last person to tell anyone how to run business. Ilegal is illegal and you got to go. No law enforcement official should he threatened especially at home which means their family is also threatened. To all those crying about how they were picked what is a better solution. Put an add in the paper to come to the airport to be sent home. Get real people. Bajan in New York.

immigration : 7/3/2009
if you enter a country illegally you have already broken the law so if you get deported you dont have no rights. in USA an illegal can be imprisoned so guyanese has no case.the attorney gen should be in charge of all deportations.so the PM stay out of this.

This is too silly to let slide : 7/3/2009
Are the private phone numbers of Immigration and Custom Officers - public information? How did people get the numbers Maloney? THis seem to be lying week but even if there was a remote possibility that Maloney's comments are believable - a threat is a matter for the police, not the NUPW. As Thompson asked David Ellis in Guyana - where is the evidence Maloney? Next time you come to the press, please - tell Barbadians if they are right to conclude that the NUPW left 6% on the table last time. Secondly, why was Derek Alleyne not asked to resign and finally - is the NUPW an organ of the DLP?

Don't back down : 7/3/2009
Prime Minister Thompson, Immigration Officers, RBPF, and the general public. DO NOT BACK DOWN. DO NOT LET UP. KEEP THE PRESSURE ON. Do not let a prime minister that cannot even develop his own country tell Barbados how to run theirs. Conduct raids 24/7, 7 days a week until you reach your goal. Remember it is only a highly vocal few you are critical not the majority of Bajans. The majority of Bajan are behind you fully. Yogi, keep up the watch

Cart First Again : 7/3/2009
To me it seems that everyone wants to get on the bandwagon and have something to say. I can see him wanting to protect those, whose interest he is being paid to protect, but what is his role right now in this affair. As I see it, if someone has been wrongfully accused or dismissed then the fight is on and a public statement is due. We are glad to hear that the immigration and customs department have a saviour and that any threats are not being taken lightly. They have to do their jobs, threats should not be tolerated, but save all the energy for the real fight.

Wrong business : 7/3/2009
Civil Servants in whatever vocation are is subjected to some form of threat. They are aware that it comes with the territory. Obviously some threats will be more intense, more serious than others. Such threats to life and limb fall under the domain of the Royal Barnados Police Force. I don't understand what is the role of the Union in this regard and the purpose of lodging complaints with them. That some Civil Servants will always choose to take the easier path or look for a 'short cut'only adds to their shallow personal development. Life will always be a challenge. We must learn to face it. Retired Civil Servant

Foolishness : 7/3/2009
Ho would anyone know the private phone numbers of Immigration Officer? Even if this was true - this could constitute a matter of national security - requiring LIME and the Government to take certain action. Stop the gimmick. The only person Immigration Officers should be concern about is - The Chief Immigration Officer of the Minister? Maloney, even the Prime Minister confirmed that raids were being conducted between 3 and 6 a.m? I do not think the NUPW will have any credibility on this a number of other matter. Let us hear your tough talk and explanation on why the union gave Alleyne leave to work for the DLP for two years. Look fellah, crawl back under which rock you now came from. The majority of Barbadians are too intelligent for this crap. This is why this country is in peril. Your comments simply do not make sense.

LETS CLEAN UP BARBADOS AND MOVE ON : 7/3/2009
We have Laws in Barbados that should be adhered to by all and sundry. If the rule of Law is not upheld in any given Society, the end result will be a STATE of Lawlessness. Barbados is a SOVEREIGN STATE and we should never let any other STATE determine what our IIMIGRATION LAWS are. If Prime Minister Thompson change his position on his IMMIGRATION Policy he should never be PRIME MINISTER of Barbados again. WE have reach the stage of DEVELOPEMENT we are at, because he have always had strong leaders. The people of Barbados have been crying out for help that something should be done about the large numbers of ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS in Barbados. Let us clean up Barbados and move forward. Let the PRESIDENT of GUYANA talk all he like, he can not run our little Island. Let him go and learn what leadership and developement is all about. Let him get rid of the race problems and discrimination of BLACK PEOPLE in Guyana. Let him develope Guyana to the benefit of all Guyanese. Let him encourage people from all over the world to come in and help advance his country.

Threats to Immigration Officers! : 7/3/2009
I cannot believe, that this is going on in Barbados. I grew up hearing that Bartbadians can only bark but cannot bite, these are the words of a very famous politician. I hope the Immigrations Department do not allow themselves to be intimidated by these non-nationals. Do not let Barbados become the laughing stock of these illegal immigrants. The law is the law,and who do not like it can lump it. Barbadian in USA
