WINNING HURDLE

JUST DAYS AWAY from receiving what is expected to be a hero's welcome, 110-metre hurdles world champion Ryan Brathwaite closed out his 2009 season with victory in the International Amateur Athletics Federation's (IAAF) World Athletics Final in Thessaloniki, Greece, yesterday.

Brathwaite clocked 13.16 seconds to win comfortably from Dexter Faulk (13.26) of the United States and Dwight Thomas (13.29) of Jamaica. It was Brathwaite's third straight win on the European circuit within recent weeks and it earned him US$30 000.

After the race the former Lester Vaughan Secondary student said he was convinced that he could do much better.

"I ran 13.16 only giving 80 per cent of what I am capable of. Next year I feel I can run sub-13 seconds," he said.

The 21-year-old became Barbados' first athlete to gain an individual gold medal at a major event when he won the 110- metre hurdles final at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin, Germany, on August 20.

Brathwaite's star continues to rise on the international stage, fulfilling the promise which he has always shown at the junior level. At the 2005 IAAF World Youth Championships he ran a leading time of 13.34 seconds in the 110-metre hurdles, before producing a silver-medal performance of 13.44 in the final.

He is the 2006 Junior CAC champion and a double CARIFTA Games gold medallist and record holder in the Under-20 Boys' division.

Based in Kansas, United States, the St Andrew-born hurdler was a semi-finalist at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, Japan, as well as at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The Government announced plans on Saturday for a grand homecoming reception and motorcade which will leave the Grantley Adams International Airport on Thursday afternoon and culminate with an official ceremony at Kensington Oval where Brathwaite will be greeted by Prime Minister David Thompson, Cabinet and other dignitaries. "Immature photographic antics of some....." my anus, seems as though you are taking a pot shot at another member of the race, excuse the pun, keep the negativity to yourself and let our members bask in their well deserved glory as their desire, not as you wish. They won it,they can flaunt it..let them be. Congrats Ryan, give us another pose, never mind the upper class wanna be.

Good going for Ryan, let's hope now that the success don't get to his head, and looking at the picture, I hope he isn't starting with the immature photographic antics of some.
