REVEREND ANGELA PHILLIPS was instituted last Saturday as rector of the St Patrick's Anglican Church.
Bishop Dr John Holder, in his sermon, advised Phillips that she had a large responsibility and the symbolic items she received were to remind her of who she was and what her duties were.
"Ministry in a parish . . . is a part of a larger unit. Keep remembering and affirming this dimension. It comes with a responsibility, one that is expected of you to strengthen the ministry in the entire diocese. The elements . . . they never allow us to forget who we are. As priests we are never to forget our roles as God's servants," he said.
During the ritual, the new minister was presented with a Bible, a vessel of water, a stole, a book of prayers, olive oil, bread and wine. Phillips was also presented with the constitution, canons and regulations of the Diocese of Barbados.
As the minister took on new responsibilities, Bishop Holder urged her to continue the good work she started. He advised her to remain humble and never lose sight of gaining more for her ministry. Phillips was also cautioned to never forget that it was only through the grace of God she could achieve.
During the service, which was attended by parliamentary representative for St Phillip West, David Estwick, Phillips was given a number of gifts from members of various departments within the church, along with presents from individuals. She thanked the congregation for their invaluable support and called for their continued support. (MM)

Rituals : 11/4/2009
There goes the rituals again. This is the big problem with the Anglican church. Where is Jesus in the Bishop's remarks to this young priest. This priest should be encouraged by the Bishop to feed the flock of the Lord Jesus, taking the oversight. He should admonish her that if she is truly called to the ministry she is considered a servant and must serve the people as commanded by our Lord Jesus Christ and this does not mean serving them communion. She also has to allow God's Holy Spirit to show her the needs of her flock and seek to address them. She should reach out to those in the community with the love of Christ. For Jesus said: "other sheep I have which are not of this fold, them also I must bring and their shall be one shepherd and one fold." This is an awesome responsibility for which one day she will have to account for before a Holy God. She needs therefore to cut out the rituals and preach Christ.
