Rihanna: "I really wanted it to stop'

In this publicity image released by ABC, Diane Sawyer (left) interviewing singer Rihanna  in New York about her relationship with former boyfriend Chris Brown. The interview aired on the morning programme Good Morning America yesterday, and will also air today on the prime time news programme 20/20. (AP Picture)

Published on: 11/7/2009.

IT WAS A LIE that triggered the ugly fight between Rihanna and boyfriend Chris Brown.

In an interview with Diane Sawyer of American television station ABC, the Barbadian singing star confirmed reports that a text message on his cellphone caused the argument.

"I caught him in a lie. And he wouldn't tell the truth . . . I was being more annoyed at that point in our relationship he had to lie about something so stupid. I couldn't take that he kept lying to me. And he couldn't take that I wouldn't drop it. And . . . it was ugly."

Her comments came in an exclusive interview with Sawyer, portions of which were aired on ABC's Good Morning America and news magazine show 20/20 on Thursday and Friday.

"All I kept thinking all the time: When is it going to stop? When is it going to stop?"

She also told Sawyer about her attempts to defend herself.

"I fended him off with my feet from one . . . side of the car, but . . . it was not like, it was not like a fight with each other. I just . . . I really just wanted it to stop," she said.

She also spoke about the immediate aftermath of the beating, when she escaped from the car in which they were both driving back to their hotel from a pre-Grammy Awards party.

"I was bleeding. I was swollen in my face. So there was no way of me getting home, except for, my next option was to get out of the car and walk. Start walking in a gown, in a bloody face. So I really don't know what my plan was. I didn't have a plan. That whole night was not part of my plan."

Meanwhile, Chris Brown also spoke yesterday about his feelings on what happened that night. He recorded a special with MTV News, which aired last night.

In the interview with MTV News correspondent Sway, Brown said "just anger" prompted his violent assault, in which he bit, choked, shoved and punched his then girlfriend, Rihanna.

He said he has been filled with recrimination since the incident.

"My thoughts [when I look back on it now] is like, 'Why did it happen? Like, 'What was I thinking? What is wrong with you?' That's what I'm thinking with myself. That's what my thoughts are, basically, now."

GOD bless you. I guess you got your corns mashed by what I wrote. Ouch! Sorry. What's the old saying, the truth hurts? Or is it, if the cap fits, wear it? Your nickname says it all. BTW, why are you hiding behind it? Is it because you can't stand by what you wrote? Come on bigboy, or rather canboy, sign off with your given name and not some ficticious invention that sounds degrading.

The Rihanna haters who posted comments here probably don't have the intellect to post comment on more serious subject matters. This subject was easy for them. What a bunch of simpletons!Or maybe they are the ones who post comments and can't determine when to use their, there and they.

Rihanna : 11/8/2009
Most of the comments from those who were critical of Rihanna were from people who would have been critical even if she had spoken like Hillary Clinton.I personally didn't see anything negative or embarrassing about the interview. Then again these critics probably hardly speak or understand the English language or they are just filled with self hatred and envy.Rihanna has more than likely learned to ignore such ignorant persons.

"Rihanna" : 11/8/2009
There was nothing wrong with her accent. I don't understand what you all mean about not speaking properly. I would agree that her sentences were not making much sense if that is what you mean. One thing I really didn't like is when she said "f love". We all know whatr that is and I don't think she should have used that term on national TV. That is lack of a good vocaobulary. Most people are saying that Rihanna has put Barbados on the map. Well if that's the case we are in a sad position. They must mean kids like Rihanna who have never done geography. You all that think that way should start reading or traveling and talk to people who have traveled the world and you would find out that Barbados is known all over the world. Instead of trying to be like the north americans get back to basics and educate yourselves and prove that you are as literate as you claim you are. Do you think Rihanna is going to drop some of her millions on you. And for Rihanna you should forget about Chris and people like him and let some of your family into your life. Do not be fooled by the glitz and glamour of hollywood. Be careful of those agents you have because they are looking our for themselves and if you are not smart enough to follow your money you will be broke before you reach age 35. Just be smart about your business. Don't just make money, try to be able to keep money and regardless of your family situation they are still your family especially your mother and father. Honor your mother and father. Your family should be part of your business. You don't need Chris Brown.

Rihanna's Interview : 11/8/2009
I have come to the conclusion, that some of you Barbadians are a bunch of hateful, envious, nasty, and self loathing people. Why is it so difficult for you people to accept, appreciate and respect your own people? It is simply ludicrous to see how you people treat your own. This young lady, has been giving her country her props from the time she left Barbados, and continues to do so. This talented young lady expressed herself very well in the interview. She spoke grammatically correct, and answered the questions with honesty and integrity. There's no reason to be hateful towards her. She has helped to placed Barbados on the map with her talents, and has also became successful at what she does. Some of you claim to be so religious and holy, but yet, you hate and judge. When it is not Rihanna, it is the returning nationals. These people who have retired from overseas and moved back to the place of their birth, should not be treated unwanted and disrespected by any of you. They are not begging alms, they are bringing their pensions and their 401ks to be spent in their country. And fyi I am sure that Rihanna is also spending money in Barbados in some shape, form or fashion. So all of you need to get a life, and instead of looking for the negative aspects of life, look for the positive, there's a whole lot of positivity out there, just waiting for people like you to find it. Disgusted with you haters.

Some o' we truly need de Lord : 11/7/2009
Clearly the relevance of being a witness to DV in her childhood and Rihanna going back to Chris (not unlike Rhianna's mother & dad)was lost to some viewers who feel she talk to much! To sit and cuss Rihanna for her speech is truly petty and mind boggling. The only "bajanism" I heard her use was "glass bottle". Can we really seriously question why anyone (man or woman) does not speak out about their experience of DV? This HUMAN BEING and fellow Bajan was bitten, beaten, kicked and choked and we got time to focus on how she spoke or sounded???!!!For a so called "christian society" ah whole heap o' we really need de Lord.

RIHANNA IS UNPATRIOTIC : 11/7/2009
Those of you who keep saying Bajans should be ashamed for not supporting Rihanna need to do some research online and read some of the comments Rihanna made about Bajans when she first became famous. Rihanna could have told people abroad that Barbados is a beautiful island with wonderful sun, sea, and sand and lots of fun things to do. She could have invited people to visit. Instead she did the following: She told a reporter for Atlanta Peach Magazine, “The week I was signed, in Barbados, they blew it up in the newspaper, and the catty people started saying that I had to have sex with Jay-Z in order to get my deal. I know Bajans, they always talk crap. They never like to see another Bajan succeed, no matter what.” She told a foreign reporter her mother had to quit her job as an accountant because of the cattiness of her Bajan co-workers. She told a foreign reporter that she was bullied at Combermere because of her light skin. She focused on accentuating the negative about Bajans instead of the positive. I am sure all Bajans did not mistreat her. Bajans took in her Guyanese relatives and provided them with free education, healthcare, employment, business opportunities, and a living environment that is a heck of a lot better than the environment in Guyana. She told a reporter, “My mom [and] all my family is from Guyana. Only up to my generation and down was born in Barbados, but everybody above me is Guyanese.” It is downright unpatriotic of her to badmouth Bajans after Bajans took in her foreign born family. She is an ingrate. Negative comments stay in people's minds longer than positive comments. More people are likely not to visit Barbados because Rihanna said Bajans aren't good people than will visit just because she is Bajan, so the people who said she is helping Barbados' tourism industry don't know what they are talking about. P.S. She told a reporter from Atlanta Peach Magazine the following, “I like bad guys. They have the most personality and make you laugh. I love that. I need to have a good time.” Chris Brown is a bad guy. She got what she wanted. I don’t want to hear anymore about her.

Rihanna : 11/7/2009
Please give me a break.I saw the interview,She spoke ok and compiled her thoughts fine. However I feel very strongly that people are not putting enough emphasis on the importance of a person developing a high enough self esteem that will help them to avoid such with characters as Chris Brown. When you think that well of your self you WILL NOT get involve with creeps like this.Hope she learns from this. Leave the young lady alone all you boring, stuck-up, straight-laced bajans, all of you struggle with the English language when you find yourselves in certain situations that's why you are known as bajans, slang for Barbadians.

Hipocracy to the highest level : 11/7/2009
first let me say that I did not see this interview, however I did read all of the comments...I'll just say this and ya'll can pick the bones out of as you no doubtedly will, Bajans 85% all sound as if they swallowed a five pound note and they have never been to the UK, 10% sound as if they swallowed a dollar bill although they cant get a visa to the USA and the other 5% all speak perfect english with a Bajan twang, stop trying to be what you are not and be proud of who you are. So in the immortal words of Robert 'Nesta' Marley 'immancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but yourself can free your mind'

Rihanna : 11/7/2009
I guess I am going to add to all that rubbish talk. If a bajan speaks well good fah them because you know what everybody no matter haw well spoken or educated it come a time when the grammar slips. I do not speak the british english but funny thing I do write it. I wanted to listen to Rihanna just to hear the Bajan accent. I have been here in canada for more years than I have lived in Barbados and believe me that accent is so sweet. We ought to be proud of it becasue people from other places do not change theirs so why should we. Well now let her live her life. She didn't listen and wanted to explore and I am sure that there were some indications that he had a violent nature. Hey we are all beautiful people it is just a matter of where you are look(ing). We should all move on that is hollywood for whatever it is worth. Move on and live on....next please

Cringed when I saw the interview : 11/7/2009
When did this Bajan girl become a shallow, fake individual speaking in monosyllabic phrases? For a dollar bill?

VERY proud Bajan

RIHANNA : 11/7/2009
The grammar, punctuation and spelling here are generally below standard, many comments are laced with envy and Bajan Yankees/Canucks still spouting superiority complex rubbish. And they say we have a 98% literacy rate! Lord have mercy on us. Come on proud Bajans, you are capable of writing much better. If you detect faults in Rihanna and are a worshipper of the Almighty, just pray for the young lady that He would open her eyes to see the truth in all things. It's better to bless than rebuke unless you're doing so in love and with her best interests in mind. Think about it.

Rihanna's interview : 11/7/2009
I must say that I thought Rihanna spoke pretty well in her interview..I kinda find it strange to hear people say "oh I couldn't understand what she was saying, or she needs to learn how to speak". Are you kidding me? Did we watch the same interview? The girl was not speaking that badly in my opinion. I can't even remember hearing much if any Bajan dialect at all in her speech. The accent was there though! Or maybe these people wanted her to sound Ameican like Beyonce so that they could say ohhh she spoke well. I find most Bajans are so hard to please, extremely envious and always try to change there personality or beliefs to fit in with persons from the bigger countries. There are not proud of their accent and most of them change it as soon as they get on a plane..It is so ridiculous. Rihanna's accent is strong and she spoke English but I guess those Bajans oversees can't understand the accent anymore.. So to them she spoke horrible..what rubbish! Anyway that is not the important issue..she was abused and she spoke on the matter and that it what is most important and for those clowns that reasoned ..oh well she was denying the relationship for years so I don't want to hear her..That is ignorant talk as well. What is done is done...she had the guy, she just didn't felt like revealing all of her business at the time..that is understandable. People think Rihanna has to reveal everything about herself before they can like her.. stuspe..it's her personal life. Don't they have one? Proud Bajan

Rhianna : 11/7/2009
I am so glad that your interview was done with Dianne Sawyer. She was really kind and gentle enough to give you the confidence to open your precious soul to us. We who have been in your shoes were touched and shed tears with you. chin up girl! You are a credit to humanity. (baje)

Rhi Rhi : 11/7/2009
I just loved to hear you speak with your beautiful little Barbadian accent You seem so comfortable and did not try to fake anything. We just love you girl, keep your head up high. God bless and guide you! Congrats again!! The pain will lessen day by day as you progress. BAJE

Ri : 11/7/2009
Keep your mouth shut. You can neither sing or speak. Stick to those cover girl ads,you are very beautiful. Why do you want to know people like Chris Brown and Jayz, all members of the bad boys club. You can't be happy being labeled "Good girl gone bad", what's wrong with you? Heads up, shoulders back, strut your stuff! You're Bajan, act like it. We're proud people. This behavior sickens me! I'm now having to explain to people i'm not that type of Bajan!

NYC

Rihanna : 11/7/2009
I watched about 15 minutes of this interview and felt this girl is not up to snuff. Since you cannot sing or speak, I would really like you to shut your mouth. Since you are such a pretty girl, you need just stick to a career as a model. Chris Brown, JayZ and the like are all bad news for a small town girl. Why do you feel you need that type of company? Please tighten up your act or stop representing my Island. I do not feel we need that type of advertisement. I'm now having to explain to people that I'm not that type of stupid Bajan.

Feel bad for you

SDhe conveniently kept quiet until her new record is due - funny that !!! Also she failed to mention she read his text messages - this is intrusive - I'm not surprised he was riled. Ireckon she pushed him to it by her behaviour. Not that it was justified but she must take some responsibility. There are always two sides.

Bajans do not embrace their own When they mention that she was from Barbados. That is marketing our beautiful island, Barbados I am so proud of her. Do you hear how the Jamaicans speak about Bob Marley and Sean Paul? It is time for us to stop criticizing each other. There is no stopping Rihanna now Gucci, Cover Girl, Vogue, she is top notch. Big up Barbados.

We all know Chris Brown was wrong for putting his hands on Rihanna. All this over a text message, you could have lost your life. When you conner a man in a lie, defuse the situation by dropping the subjet. As an independent woman with money and fame ,you can do better than Chris.Hold your head up and demand respect.Women that can not, do better stay with men that lie to them.Work on doing something meaniful with your new fame, help young girls in your country in some way.Forget about the men for now ,Mr: Right will come along some day.

Happy : 11/7/2009
I feel regret to her how Bajans could get here and criticize Rihanna, do you realize besides the promotion of her CD what an impact tthis interview have for Barbados tourism. I agree with th efact that her vocabulary needs improving but i will accept that as nerves. Barbados as a Nation NEEDS to support Rihanna and thank her for all she is doing to put Bim in the conscience of people world-wide. We have greater heroes who couldnt achieve what she has done, with all respects to all our living legends including Sir Garfield Sobers . Thank you Rihanna

OMG!!! : 11/7/2009
It's truly a sad sad day when an artist from a tiny caribbean island can't get any love from her native ppl. Rihanna has brought Barbados into the spotlight. I've lived in the US for many years and for many years ppl had never heard of Barbados where I am from. I believe she did well in her interview. She was very composed considering what she had to say and I thought she spoke well. Bajans are too obsessed with speaking properly and are really too critical of her unfairly at that. (PPL in the US are also into accents and how ppl talk too but as the world is getting smaller ppl are more accepting of differnt cultures) The girl is a beautiful girl representing a beautiful country. For one thing Chris has never said she hit him as much as he has been in the media. If she denied they were a couple in the beginning it's her perogative. The public is too involved in lives of celebrities. Furthermore I don't view any celebrity as a role model who ever came up with that term to describe a celebrity is an idiot. They are just human beings like the rest of us who happen to have fame & money. People on the island need to leave it and experience life outside the island. I find them very envious or critical of ppl who live in the US when there is really nothing to be envious about. They too can leave and travel and see what else is out there. No matter what she does or doesn't she will be criticized. I read many of the comments on celebrities and the hate is unbelievable from the public. Humans are sad. People should be accepted as they are.

Proud of Rihanna : 11/7/2009
I saw the interview on 20/20 last night, and I am very proud of Rihanna for coming forward. Let's drop our ignorance about the way she sounded. She sounded way better than Chris Brown on his interview, and way better than any of you Bajans would sound on an interview at that level. Especially the ones that are talking crap. Stop finding every little thing to hate about and get a life. Rihanna is a super star, and I am sure all those who are making negative comments are plain low life worthless souls. Get a life haters. I love Rihanna, her style, her music, her attitude, the way she speaks, her accent, everything about her. But I bet if I had to meet any of these folks you are making outrageous negative comments, I would not like them - too much negative energy for me. Here is a lesson for all haters. When you start focusing on positive things about other you attract positive energy around you, and your life start moving in a positive direction. When you always look for the negative in others, you attractive negative energy and you start drawing negative things into your life. Have a good life people, and learn to love.

Response to DUMB. She cant speak, eh, yet a lot of well educated people haven't got her kind of money. She make up for it in talent.

Education please!! : 11/7/2009
I tried watching the interview on YouTube, but had to close my browser. This girl sounds like someone that didn't go to school, what has happened to our once great educational system? She sounds like she went to school in the USA and was a member of the football team, in other words, she didn't go to school to learn. This dumb sounding girl is what all this fuss about. She needs some English lessons, she finally wanted to speak as soon as her album is about to be released, and you fools fell for it, this is about selling albums, but great strategy from her camp.

Nasty Comment by Bajans : 11/7/2009
A prophet is not recognized in his/her home town and neither is a good singer/entertainer/model appreciated. Nasty Fools in here judging and putting her down..I think that she seems to most importantly need to increase the amount of book reading that she does to improve her literary an coordination when she speaks, as bad slack speaking habit are learnt among some parts of barbados like US Southern States, Ireland, wales & Scotland accents..however that is minor as she is honest, intelligent, most importantly herself and reflects a credible character with integrity..she still speaks beautiful and calm..some of you slave minded want her to get a MSC degree and sound like a London or Manhattan snob..get yur own lives u mental losers. There are different accents all over world and it doesnt effect literacy nor integrity..some people speak pretty with a degree and they still very ignorant , illiterate and dont read books..education is good tool for masses but a lot of dogma at the same time to think u need it at her stage to be wise or successful..she can afford to educate herself privately on topics and buy professional brains and learn the rest on the way. ..

Slave Forever Never

Oh please : 11/7/2009
I really don't care to hear anything from Rihanna because as far as I'm concern she owes Barbadians the favour of a free concert so we could witness her talents here in Barbados. It's a shame to known that she has been a big superstar for years now and still haven't afforted bajans the opportunity of seeing her perform right here in her homeland.

Wunna Bajans is a bunch of damned hyprocriates. Domestic Abuse is abuse whether is's from a local girl down Bank Hall or a celebrity in Hollywood. whether she denied being in the relationship with Chris or not does not degating he beating the crap out of her... As an educated Bajan, I think she did well in her interview. put wunnaselves in her shoes at her age, and given her international success. get over wunna high and might selves and leave de damned girl alone. Deal with the issue at hand, Domestic Abuse, How did you want her to represent herself, how did you want her to speak, wid a fake american accent so dat wunna cud vilify her again. she can't win fuh loosing wid wunna...what a pity.

Reading the comments below I can see why abuse (in its many forms) is alive and well in Barbados. As a people we lack empathy. Amazing how people are focusing on Rihanna - her clothes, her music, etc. All of that is irrelevant. She was abused by another person - full stop. Now she is trying to learn and break the cycle and move on. @Tsk Tsk. Your comments are unfortunate. Regarding, Rihanna's disclosures about her family. Yes, this is quite uncomfortable and I honestly sympathise with them all. Her father included. However, her childhood experiences are still with her (she is only 20) and if this is what she needs to do to rid herself of his psychological demons. Then so be it. Once she is telling the truth.

Rihanna : 11/7/2009
Rihanna did FINE on that interview. She spoke from her heart. She is a mega star and does not need Barbados for anything. I am Barbadian and old enough to be Rihanna's mother. I am proud of her and all of you should be too. I have had tourists ask me where did Rihanna live. The girl is AWESOME. She speaks fine. I guess some of you don't hear yourselves. Leave her alone! Bajans are so cruel, jealous and petty. Get a life. EXCELLENT job Rihanna! You make me proud. Violence is wrong and should not be shoved under a rug. So what if she has a CD coming out?

Bajan Queen

: 11/7/2009
Once again the haters are out, obviously the girl was nervous about the interview. Some idiot commented if she went to Combermere.........wow it's astonishing how people scrutinize this girl. Can anyone of you negative people do better in an interview if the tables were turned. You people need to get a life and stop hating on the girl. Rihanna dresses to suit herself not what everyone thinks she needs to wear.Who are you people to degrade the girl in this way. Maybe take a break and leave Barbados for a few years at least and experience life outside of Barbados. Maybe you people will be more open minded.Just get a life and leave Rihanna alone. Kepp rocking Rihanna........

Wow : 11/7/2009
As a Bajan living in the USA, I was embarrassed. She didn't present herself properly at all. She could not string her words together in coherent sentences. It seems her pauses weren't because of the trauma, but most likely to find the words use to make the sentence make sense. If you really want to be a role model, you've got a long way to go.

Wow, just, wow

: 11/7/2009
I am not saying that any man should hit a woman but when you start bad you will end bad. This girl lied about being a relationship with this man over and over again. Now she says they were together for 2yrs. She even lied in the interview about him pushing her into the wall. Another thing is that this girl needs to learn how to speak properly. I am bajan and had a hard time following her in the interview. She is not going to help any young girls, she is there to promote a cd and that is it. I have been saying from the time she came out: fame is okay but get some education.

Good job : 11/7/2009
Oh Rihanna I love you always, keep up the good work. Don't care what bad those Barbadians say. love always from a Barbadian in Canada. You did well in that interview.

So Typical : 11/7/2009
I feel really bad for her and he had no right abusing her. I notice one thing I seen in my relationships with other Bajan women and from conversation with other men who have. She believe he was lying and would not drop the matter. She has money, and career and did not need Chris so why not walk away. Now I believe she started it and came out on the short end of the stick. By the way - is she promoting a CD? Just a thought..

Observer

: 11/7/2009
Rihanna I am proud of you, you spoke well and I am glad that your relationship is over. Abuse is something that I am not sure can ever be cured, I always believe the abuse can resurface at any moment. Now that she has spoken, I am sure there will be some negative feedback from some people, what else is new. These negative people don't have a life so it's makes their day to say negative comments about people. It doesn't matter what Rihanna does in her life or career, people especially Barbadians are so mean and negative. They seem not to realize that while they are hating on her, it doesn't take away the mega star that she has become and in such a short period of time. That's impressive. Not sure why they are envious or whatever their sick reasoning is, I have no idea. Remember, Rihanna did not assign herself Ambassador to Barbados, but people act like she has to be every young girl's role model or promoter of Barbados. I am sure she signed a music contract for her benefit, not to satisfy every Barbadian out there. I happen to like her fashion sense, it's unique and she is a trend setter. She is a young girl and of course she will dress sexy at times, she is in the music industry and we all know unfortunately, sex sells. She has promoted Barbados by just being in the spotlight, people know who she is and her origin. So for all the haters out there, stop condemning, criticizing and embrace the girl. She is not perfect, she is young and will make mistakes. We should be proud that we have a beautiful Barbadian girl grace the covers of well known magazines and is famous in different parts of the world especially to top fashion designers. She rocks......... New York Rihanna Fan

Weren't you the same person denying that you guys were together. Please go away girl. You don't own anyone, a "text", get over yourself, time for the album to drop right? Stop the pity party, enough already, would've bought this crap months ago.

: 11/7/2009
why does every thing is about her nowadays she is not a good role model for young girls for the past couple of weeks she was caught exposing all of her private parts why is everyone praising her there are many women in barbados that was abuse worst that her and barbads is not focusing on her what is the difference

: 11/7/2009
I have avoided commenting on this artist over the years because I personally admire what she has done for herself and unlike the jealous haters who constantly bombard her with idle chatter on her clothing, etc., this is part of the genre. However, after viewing the interview on 20/20 last night I found myself quite embarrassed. Not only from the foolishness she uttered but the manner in which she revealed the foolishness. She reminded me of the many celebrity athletes and entertainers up north who can hardly put a sentence together. My jaw was left hanging. Did this girl truly graduate from "Cawmere"? Tsk Tsk. Young lady, you need to hire yourself a private tutor for you need to polish those rough edges and replace it with some etiquette. Maybe through a time warp grab yourself a governess. Perhaps your time spent amongst the likes of Brown have dumbed you down somewhat, I dont know. But you seem rather short on manners; and please; there is no need to allow the foreign press to assault your family no matter whatever "abuse" there might have been in your family. No family is perfect, Dianne Sawyer's family is not perfect but you did not hear her mention that did you?

Interview : 11/7/2009
Well I watched and had a mix of feelings. It was by her account a horrific incident, it was revealing to leRner about her own witness to DV between her parents and her attempts to get them to stop their own fighting. I also felt she was attempting to minimise the past events like shoving because she did not get bruised or bloody. I think Rihanna handled the interview very well, I would have like to hear more questions about her family's response and their support to her especially her mother. I also think it would have been useful to learn if she went to therapy given the extent of he violence, the end of the relationship and the mention of flashbacks. It would be interesting for our local journalists to do a follow up story with the family if they consent. Our thoughts are with you Rihanna.

Abuse : 11/7/2009
This interviewed made me sick! Rihanna needs to take responsibility as well because as she said, they were equally abusive. Also, certain things that Rihanna was saying did not make sense.
