PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY in the Prime Minister's Office, Senator Irene Sandiford-Garner, has a vision for the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic (SJPP).
"I have a vision of SJPP as part of an even larger, amalgamated institution where adequate provision is made for that large number of our children who have an aptitude for technical and vocational work."
At the new expanded institution, she said, she expected to see "standards rising to degree level and the prospectus being widened to include a vast range of non-academic disciplines".
This will require the establishment of a single campus dedicated to technical and vocational education and training, with a range of non-academic disciplines that will not compete with, but complement what is provided at the University of the West Indies. (DS)

I have a vision of the critical and liberal bajan...WHERE IN THIS PRESS RELEASE, WHICH IS BRANDED IN QUOTATION MARKS DID THE SENATOR SAY IT IS A NEW IDEA? I am tired of bajans being spoon fed by assumptions and falsified smidgets of idealistic veiws... READ ..UNDERSTAND ..COMMENT.. Instead we have 4 comments which lack FACT..
Competition : 11/4/2009
Maybe the Minister should speak to UWI about competition since it appears that this is a concept for UWI. The fine art, Dance and the mass communications programme that is to come on stream shortly are evidence that there is not much regard for what programming already exists at BCC.
Regardless : 11/4/2009
Regardless of whose idea this was, we have to be realistic about this new global world we are embarking on as a country. Barbados is very much behind in technology. The South Asians are marketing their technology skills all over the world (especially India) and they are in demand in the US. I previously worked for a large international organization that has been off-shoring most of it's work to India because of the technology. Why can't we try to do the same, since our major export is people. We are an intelligent people but too laid-back. The government should also solicit help from Barbadians overseas to help in this endeavor, i.e., if folks don't find them threatening. Most of our youth are walking around with laptops just to play games. This is a waste of precious time. The youth leaving public school that are not going on to college should be encouraged by the schools to attend vocational school, i.e., if this is not already done. We got to get this thing together otherwise we are going to be left behind.
Sandiford-Garner's vision : 11/4/2009
This gossip is nothing new the last government had similar plans for this and other institutions.
REALLY!!!!!!!!!!! : 11/4/2009
CHUPSE! NEW VISION HELLO....YOU NOW ENTER POLITICS? THAT WAS AN IDEA FROM THE PREVIOUS GOVERNMENT. CHUPSE
Name Change : 11/4/2009
Let's start with a name change and name that reflects Mrs. Sandiford true vision for the SJPP. Don't drop the SJP but drop the P in Polytechnic and factor in the name the focus on technical and vocational work. Then build an institution that encapsulates everything technical and vocational.

Hmmmm, sounds a bit like the old University College of Barbados (UCB) concept. The last government has sunk loads of money in consultants, staff and planning for such an entity. It's a bit disrespectful to make this sound like a new idea though.
