THE BARBADOS LABOUR PARTY (BLP) was yesterday urgedto settle any "perceived leadership problems"in the party,if it wants to win the Government again.
The advice was givenby Reverend Wayne Kirton during a sermon at the start of the annual BLP conference at the Barbados Community College.
To loud applausefrom those in attendance, Reverend Kirton let it be known that "the perceived leadership struggle is not going to do this party any good. If the perceived leadership struggle boils over, the Barbados Labour Party will remain in opposition for another term".
He strongly advised the members to support party leader Mia Mottley.
"The BLP at this current time has a leader, and members must throw their weight behind their leader. You must stop dividingthe BLP," he said.
The reverend also toldthe gathering that the BLP "had never been knownto be part of this open warfare" and he advised"it must not become partof the party now".
Stating that God had blessed the party with great leaders from Sir Grantley Adams down to Mia Mottley, he called for unity as the party continued to evolve.
Using a biblical example, he said that the disciples John and James behavedin a selfish manner because they thought it was all about them, but Kirton pointed out that "Jesus said it was whoit was prepared for", adding"He will deliver who will lead this country".
He said: "I am asking members to stand behind the party symbol . . . . Members of the BLP have a chance in 2009 to step up to the plate."
He also told membersof the party to live up to the theme of the conference -In Defence Of Our People and to be "servants of those you serve".
"It is not that you speakof defence of our peoplenow that the party is in Opposition, but even more so when you form the Government," he said.
In his address, chairman George Payne also called on the rank and file of the party to rally behind Mottley.
"We have an elected political leader - an undisputed leader. We are rallying behind our leader. They are spreading rumours all over the place that this body wants to take overand this body wants to come back. We don't know anything about that."
Feed My Sheep : 10/25/2009
This is grievous to me and I know it is to the Lord Jesus, that is, if this man was truly called to pastor. People are departing this life without the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ and Mr. Kirton is out there embracing a political party. It's no wonder that the church is in such a mess. The Bible clearly states that a pastor should preach Christ and Him crucified. Mr. Kirton is also forgetting that God is still in the business of removing one leader and putting up another. All power has been ordained of Him. It would be better for him to leave the ministry and join his party of choice than to mess with the things of God.
Reverned Kirton : 10/25/2009
I am surprise the good Reverend kirton is getting into the political fray. Reverend Kirton needs to use his pulpit to disuss issues that are affecting especially the down trodden people. These politicians do not have the people's interest at heart. They come around only when it is election and give the people a lot of false promises. People must remember that a "promise is comfort to a fool" and not to be fool by them. Reverend Kirton shame one you. Use your platform to get guns out of the hands off those idiots terrorizing people. Speak to the young ones about abstinence to curtail AIDS/HIV, or the use of condoms instead of licking chlorox off their hands, the importance of children staying/going to school, and advocating help for people like the homeless double amputee sleeping in an old car. Reverend Kirton please learn about the values of the one you are supposed to represent "JESUS CHRIST." Do not get with these politicians cloaking the eyes of the citizens of Barbados. It is time to help them remove their cloak. New Jersey Girl
To Mia's Supporter(s) : 10/25/2009
Be careful that your support doesn't come back to "BITE" you in the future. I know women will be tempted to see her candidacy as some kind of victory for women's rights, but is it enough to have any woman in that position, or the right woman? You Decide.
A reverend called Kirton, a Leader called Mia : 10/25/2009
I am bemuse to hear a man of the cloth entangling himself with the nature of politics. To be so bold as to disclosed the divide in the BLP leadership struggle to then proclamate and seek to harness support for the leader of the opposition is absolutely astounding. I sense a psychological ploy here to use religion as a convincing tool to gather support for Mia the leader. Though I do not see anything wrong with this I have a big problem when that man of the cloth sidesteps the fact that the opposition leader has an alternative lifestyle condemnable and damned by the bible. Is this reverend saying let us back Mia all the way, including the fact that she has an alternative lifestyle and is part and parcel of the controverial allegations of mass corruption now entangling the BLP camp?
Leader : 10/25/2009
The advice that was given by Rev Kirton was good advice.People have to understand that Owen Arthur had his time.Mottley is smart and educated. When she need advice she would call on the elders of the party Bajan48 Arkansas

THE DLP WILL WIN AGAIN
HI, Rev. : 10/25/2009
Have you ever heard these words spoken. "The Separation of Church and State". You don`t sound like a person I would want to hear deliver a Sermon. The former prime minister said that he was asleep at the wheel and his ministers ran wild. Some of the things that I read about where ministers using their influence to get contracts for their friends and family, that`s unfair and it`s a serious offence. That`s why so much money was wasted, the jobs were not completed because the people were not qualified. I would not say any more because my comment may not be accepted.

You look just like the sheepish politicians. Resign from the church and join them.
BLP did great during Time in Office : 10/25/2009
THIS IS A RESPONSE TO PRODICAL SON (sic)when he wrote "The BLP basically destroyed this country and its values. They deserve to be in the WILDERNESS for the next 16 years."----------MY RESPONSE--is that -----The DLP nearly destroyed this country between 1988 and 1994. Owen Arthur and the BLP had to rescue this country from the depths of despair.People in St. Vincent were laffing at we and refusing to take our dollar. Former Prime Minister Sandiford gave senior Public Servants 33 million dollars in back pay after the regrading exercise and stated that the economy was batting better than Sir Garfield Sobers. Two weeks after we were in the hands of the IMF-(REMEMBER ? ) The BLP did some wonderful things during the 14 years in office. Only go down by Independence Square and look across and see what aesthetic value can do to the psyche. The very computer that you sit at to type drivel about the BLP destoying this country-the computer was made duty free, NO VAT -NOTHING by Owen Arthur and the BLP so that people like you could get a computer to work on .I could go on forever but you people are something else and the truth is not in you.----PLEASE SHOW SOME GRATITUDE.
: 10/25/2009
A Priest supporting Mia! Which Bible he uses? Kirton if you did not notice...morals were destroyed when the BLP was in power and if Mia ever gets her hand on the leadership of this country...we are doomed. Read the Bible Sir!
Sometimes Perception Is Reality : 10/25/2009
Mia is wrecking the party. I would like to see Owen come back.
keep religion n politics apart : 10/25/2009
i agree 100% with baje in atlanta, nothing wrong with sayin prayers for bees or dees but when u start talkin about the bees being better than dees and talkin politics when u should be saving souls i tottally disagree n for that i'd vote for the dees cause u aint helping but makin things worse, please stick to religion reverend
Keep Religion and Politics apart : 10/25/2009
It gives me an uneasy feeling when I hear politics on the pulpit or religion of this sort at political gatherings. Is God less likely to bless someone if they are in the DLP? Why is a Reverend giving political advice/speeches? Does God like one party better than the next? No one should claim or hint that God is on their side; like Abraham Lincoln once said, we and they (politicians) should humbly pray that we/they are on God's side. I don't think anyone would want a Reverend as their Political leader or a Prime Minister as their Reverend. There is an inherent conflict. It is obvious, by what is going on in many countries, that Theological Political Regimes do not work. If you disagree with me, do this: Imagine a religion - that is not your own, as the law of the land; what is acceptable or not acceptable is based on this other religion, how would you feel? Let's be cognizant of what is good and not good for our island. Nothing is wrong with prayers at a political event; but there is a line, common sense draws that boundary. By the way, I have no preference for Bee of Dee - my thoughts would be "exact" (except reversing parties) if this were a DLP rally. Just my thoughts.
MIA MIA MIA!!! : 10/25/2009
Well all I can say that I liked Owen but when he passed the baton to Mia it made me so proud to be a Bajan woman!!! I hope Owen dont go and mess up himself now by trying to take back the baton!!!
REV KIRTON WHERE WERE YOU? : 10/25/2009
REV,Kirton , are you facing the poles next election? The BLP basically destroyed this country and its values. They deserve to be in the WILDERNESS for the next 16 years. You people should be ashame of yourselves. REV. Kirton where were you when the BLP was destroying Barbados? You all really think that Bajans are IDIOTS.
back mia : 10/25/2009
i am laughing at that revend , he knows that mia cant win no elections in Barbados , it is ok to talk but to talk facts is another thing . The only way for the BLP to win again is if Owen Arthur returns . I voted for the DLP but if he returns i will give them my vote ......... simple !
: 10/25/2009
Stay in the church, you have your own issues.
BIBLE : 10/25/2009
its good to read the BIBLE can you teach and preach ROMANS 1
party problems : 10/25/2009
Is this the same party the made leadership an issue in the DLP camp what goes around come around.
ADVICE : 10/25/2009
VERY GOOD WORDS OF ADVICE.THE BLP MUST NEVER BEGIN TO BEHAVE LIKE THE DLP IN OPPOSITION.
