FEEDBACK FEATURE: Readers split on Easter revelry

Reverend Devere Murrell

Published on: 4/13/2009.

Opinions seem to be evenly split over today’s lead story ‘Oh No!’ where church leaders knocked promoters for holding shows during Lent. They were especially critical of Easter Reggae Explosion, held at Kensington Oval on Easter Sunday, the holiest day in the Christian calendar, with Baptist Pastor Vincent Wood saying it was “desecrating the day of the Lord.”

Several NATIONnews.com readers agreed with their view that holding the shows was “insensitive” and disrespectful in a society that is predominantly Christian.

 One reader opined that:

“These artists are definitely crossing the line. I know most of these people were raised in the Christian faith and should know better. Because your neighbour does wrong does not make an excuse for Barbadians to accept the notion and do wrong also. This is the ultimate disrespect for God.”

Another reader praised church leaders for speaking out, saying:

“I am glad that some leaders are condemning these shows. We have become the dumping ground of entertainment during Lent. Hopefully we can make enough noise that come next year, all we will [hear] during Lent are church bells ringing.”

However, other readers who also disapproved of the shows, also had some stern words for church leaders, questioning why they did not speak out earlier.

One reader said it would have been “better to be pro-active and head off these situations, [rather] than reactive and complaining with little effect” while another found it “amazing that church leaders spoke out a day before the concert”, surmising that it “sounds like it was too little too late.”

However, not all readers were against the shows and in fact, several were scathing in their denunciation of church leaders.

A reader compared their actions to that of the Taliban, stating:

“The Religious Taliban is now upon us. These self-righteous folk now want to turn Barbados into BARBADOSTAN. Soon, you will have to confront The Royal Religious Police of Barbadostan, if ever you should want to go to the shop. I thought that the said Jesus that these zealots are said to be celebrating, was a man of tolerance.”

Another reader questioned “why [do] Christians in Barbados think because they are the majority [that] they are entitled to special treatment?”

Other readers suggested the church needs to examine itself first and make itself more appealing.

“It seems to me that the real issue here is one of attracting patronage. One of the most common complaints voiced by church leaders is to the effect that keen competition or rivalry is responsible for the troubles or poor progress in the organisations owned or operated by them. Instead of complaining and attempting to discover all the wrong things you could find about entertainment shows [at] this time of year, you should analyse your own situation and try and find what was wrong with you or your church,” stated a reader.

Another reader identified what they found to be some of the issues in the Barbadian church, saying:

“I find in Barbados the church does not go out into the community and preach loudly like before because half the church does not talk to each other and the other half are critical of each other. When the young people of today see this it becomes a big turn off from the church.”

Show not rastafarian : 4/15/2009
In reply to the commenter who decided not to submit a name (4/14/2009 TheBarbados is supposed to be a Godly society...) and in defense of the rastafari of virtue on this island, I must say the show was never touted, or promoted as a rastafari show. While I do agree that reggae and rastafari have strong connections, these links must not be used to drag down a religion with strong spiritual beliefs (even if not in line with our religous beliefs). Therefore the disrespect which you speak of is very likely not from the Ratsafari here, who continually are given a bad name at the hand of negative Jamaican influences (lately the daggerin and such) My point is -- bias is common but when commenting on such a touchy issue as a mark of respect it's best to see the large picture and not go poking around in the dark.

I am sure both the PM and probably the opposition leader attended that show. Barbados is in for a rude awakening, we don't seem to realise that things like this is the manifestation of what is really being accepted in our society. In trinidad there is no partying during lent, however, it is ok for the trini artiste to come here and party. To have your reggae show on easter sunday is disrespect to the max.

TheBarbados is supposed to be a Godly society, whether it be christianity, rastafarianism or whatever other religion. Each religion must respect the other. I saw nothing wrong with having the reggae show, but did it have to be on Easter day? Rastas are always crying out for respect for them and their religion and I believe true rastas deserve it. However, I also believe that this was total disrespect of the Christian religion to host this event on Easter, which only servres to push them a step backward because two wrongs don't make a right. To gain respect, you have to give respect and if that mean continually turning the other cheek and showing the positive consciousness that true rasta teaches, then that's what should be done. It could have been held on another weekend and would have gotten the same support & attendance that it got on Sunday. Another interesting fact about this is that it was produced by a Jamaican company under the guise of a bajan marketing director (Alison Rock). I cannot speak to the division of culture and religion across Jamaica as I have not visited the island, nor know too much about it, but I know Barbados and as a Bajan native, so should Alison Rock. When this was first proposed, the onus was on her to make light of the possible backlash. Even if the Jamaican promoter didn't see it, she should have. Not only does it set a bad example for the youths, christian and rasta alike but to make sure that future projects done by her and the Jamaican promoter she represents, as a businesswoman, this should have been a huge consideration. The church, why wait until so close to the event? This event was being advertised for weeks and weeks before so there was more than enought time to fight this and possibly come to a mutually beneficial agreement. It seems to me that this event was squeezed into this weekend to take advantage of the long weekend and pull in massive attendance but moreso to get in on the reggae action and pull some of the money and crowd away from the bajan produced Reggae on the hill because I know many people were forced to decide between the two shows. To sum it all up, greed and no respect.

OH,NO! : 4/14/2009
I’ve followed with interest the many views articulated by your readers here and abroad. Firstly, I believe the views of all should be tolerated even if they appear extreme, after all, a belief is nothing more than an idea in our head, voluntarily accepted or unwillingly allowed. We all need to take a step back and revisit this topic with calm and objectivity. Thereafter, some measure of balance and reason might prevail. Here’s the thing, there has always been and will always be activities within society to distract religious persons for worship, especially democratic societies. Religious leaders need to be more mature and stop behaving like children who can’t get their way. Your focus should be more on yourself and the organizations you own or control. If I’m a true Christian, no show will stop me from attending church, and if it does, then I should make an effort to re-examine my faith. If I’m not a Christian, then no amount of silly complaining from religious leaders will move me to go to church. If on the other hand I’m undecided, and we know that there are quite a few of those, then it is up to the church to summon their creativity to sway me towards their doors and away from the doors of the party. One last thing, many a man and woman, have ventured to supposedly unholy places only to be converted in the process. As Christians say, the lord works in mysterious ways.As Above, So Below. So mote it be.

Easter Sunday : 4/14/2009
From time immemorial religious zealots have sought to forced their religious beliefs upon others, on one hand we condemn Hitler, Pol Pot, Stalin and other despots of history, for the atrocities committed throughout their rein, on the other hand here in 2109 we are worshiping a so called God, who has committed worse atrocities than the previous dictators, genocide against the caananites, the people of Ur, the Midianites, millions of innocent animals slaughtered in offerings etc., here we were condemning the killing of one dog last week, and attempting to bring that person to justice, When are we going to bring this Christian God to justice, for the crimes against humanity, and all those innocent animals, it's time we placed the Bible in the fairy tales section of the public library, or throw it into the dustbin of history, turn those churches into social centers to equipt our young with the tools for adult life, instead of the worship of some biblical mass murderer who had no qualms murdering innocent babies, pregnant women, children encouraging slavery and the rape of innocent little girls, here we have a God with zero morals, while the church complains about music/ concert on easter because some of us refused to be shackled by false religion beliefs.

I followed this story yesterday from the distance. This was an excellent analysis of the feedback. The comments were passionate and real. I hope this was a wake-up call for Church leadership. The call being that in general "we are seeking their leadership daily" not lip service weekly. By the way: Where was the Bishop when all this was going on? Can someone find out what his thoughts are? Is he planning on addresing these issues?

FREEDOM : 4/14/2009
The freedom to hold such events, even on Easter Sunday shows the willingness and acceptance of our society to accept change, but is it really about change or greed. freedom is great but there must be bounderies. i am sadden to see what my country is coming to...this is not progress but pure greed, ignorance and a lack of respect for anything we held dear. there is certainly a lack of respect for anything descent theses days. the chase for the "almight dollar" will be the undoing of this small but precious nation. We must maintain some values!

OH NO : 4/13/2009
Barbadian society and the values that made us who we are are have been sacrificed on the alter of culture.Entertainers and their holy right to make a living are all that matters in this God-forsaken society.Even the church is caught in the trap.Let us pray.

Easter Sunday : 4/13/2009
I am surprised that the government allowed a reggae party to take place on Easter Sunday at Kensington oval, the most holiest day of the lenten season. Government should be ashamed. There was no respect shown here. Concerned Bajan.

Thank God that someone has the guts to speak out about this ungodliness. The Bible clearly states that "blessed is that nation whose God is the Lord". If we should so choose to defy the things of God to promote our own agenda don't be surprised if one day we find ourselves facing the judgment of a Holy God. Yes, I do agree that the church has become very weak and that the Word of God is being compromised by some. However, there is still a remnant and God honors them. When a day like Good Friday and Easter, the most sacred time in the history of the world, is being use to celebrate the lust of man's flesh, this I consider despicable. Were it not for Jesus' death, burial and resurrection we would have all ended up in an eternal hell. None of us could appease the wrath of God because of Adam's disobedience and his sin nature which we inherited. Only Jesus could and He willing did it for all humanity whether we choose to believe it or not. To take this sacred time to engage in this despicable behavior is an abomination in the sight of the Lord. If only we could understand what the cross means, it would change our whole perspective on how we behave. Barbados has been kept because of the prayers of a remnant of people that God knows. Many of them are the elderly. When they are gone, may the Lord help us.

Revelry on Easter Sunday : 4/13/2009
No! NO! No! with all capital Letters.- Barbados is really going down hill with all the revelry on such high holy days. Lent is only 40 days and if they can't wait - that's just to bad. They should be a law preventing such behavior. I think that Barbados is competing with the US but it is too damn small. they are real copycats. I live in the US and is always boasting about my home but I don't know what it is coming to. Angry Away-Bajan

shows : 4/13/2009
bajans need to wake up Christianity is a religion just like any other religion, everyone has the right to partake in any activities they want at any point in time, who gives Christians the right to say when someone can or can not hold a show, its a day just like any other day, what would happen if all the religion complained about people holding events on days that were meaningful to them then what would happen, not everyone believes in god or a god or a religion or a faith but christains seem to think they have the right to dictate what goes on in and entire country, like if their the only ones who have a say in what goes on, if they want to do something should look into the homosexual priest that molest the young altar boys. the atheist

OH, NO!! : 4/13/2009
