GAYLE AGAIN

LOOKING AHEAD. In charge of the West Indies team once again, Chris Gayle, relaxing at the Accra Beach Hotel recently.

Published on: 11/2/2009.

CHRIS GAYLE is the man.

Amidst widespread speculation over the choice of West Indies captain for the forthcoming tour of Australia, Gayle has been given another chance to leadthe regional team.

While the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) made no official announcement after a two-day directors meeting in Barbados at the weekend, informed sources revealed that Gayle was ratified following a recommendation from the selection panel.

Additionally, Gayle's presence at the Accra Beach Hotel yesterday when it was believed he met with directors, appeared to confirm that he landed the job.

Gayle arrived in the island from Guyana yesterday morning while other members of the Jamaica team that failed to advance to the semi-finals of the President's Cup returned to Kingston.

At least three regional news media - the Jamaica Gleaner and the Jamaica Observer and the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) - also reported that Gayle was appointed captain.

It ends weeks of debate over the issue that had been triggered mainly by Gayle's remarks earlier this year over his future as captain and his preference for the Twenty20 form of the game.

While he might have fallen out of favour with many armchair pundits, fellow players voiced their support for him to lead the team in recent weeks.

At the same time, several other observers endorsed Trinidad and Tobago captain Daren Ganga and compatriot Dwayne Bravo as those with solid credentials to be elevated.

Gayle enjoyed some level of success as West Indies captain since his appointment in 2007 before he and other first choice players made themselves unavailable for the home series against Bangladesh this year.

His success at the helm included a first Test match win for West Indies
in South Africa, the Caribbean's first Test series win against England since 1998 and qualification for the semifinals of the ICC World Twenty.

CMC also reported yesterday that former West Indies fast bowler Joel Garner would be the manager for the tour to Australia.

It is expected that the 15-member team which is scheduled to leave the Caribbean next Monday will be announced today. (HG)

Gayle as Captain. : 11/2/2009
This should never have happened. He is sounding just like Lara, because he makes lots of run does not mean he should be the captain. a captain has to have cricket knowledge as well as tactics in his head and he has to motivate his players, can Gayle do that after all he has said in the past.

The board for the first time in a long time have made a wise decision by reappointing Christopher Henry Gayle as captain.. Only sane choice they could have made..

In the present situation - I think this was a move that will at least calm the nerves of the international cricket playing nations - ( ie much of a muchness )world cricket needs to see that WICB is doing something to settled the problems in our game!lets all get behind the team and thank god that we're going to see a WI team playing some good cricket.

GAYLE AGAIN : 11/2/2009
Doomed to failure, We are just going through the motion of fielding a team. We are at this point the door mat of the world stage of Cricket. We need to be in the building mode. As things are we are just struggling and will continue to do so under the present ledership. On and off the field

West Indies cricket team and I have one thing in common, we are both retired. We also have one big difference, they are a totally indiscliplined bunch. Retired

I am happy to see that the selectors and the board did not let Murray and other folks influence their decision.

What sense does it make to make Chirst Gayle captain again? Gayle said time and time again he has no interest in TEST CRICKET.
