A 28 year old man has been rescued from the rubble of a building, 27 days after the devastating 7.0 earthquake which hit the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince on January 12.

CNN reports that doctors say the man may have been trapped since the quake and that he told them that someone “in a white coat” had been bringing him water while he was trapped.

However, the doctors also noted that he seemed disoriented seemed to believe he was still trapped beneath the rubble.

The man’s family told staff at the University of Miami field hospital that he was found in the wreckage of a market where he sold rice.

CNN’s chief medical correspondent, Dr Sanjay Gupta reported that the man was emaciated and suffering from extreme dehydration and malnutrition but did not appear to suffer from any major crushing injuries.

Gupta reported that the survivor said at times during his nearly month long ordeal, he could hear bulldozers excavating the remains of the buildings around him. He also reportedly told doctors that at some points, he wished for death.

The amazing discovery comes nearly four weeks to the day since the massive earthquake which hit the impoverished Haitian capital, killing as many as 212 000 people and leaving millions homeless.

Haiti’s government declared search and rescue efforts over on January 23.
