New hardwood house option

Published on: 11/19/2009.

BARBADIAN LOW-INCOME EARNERS will have another opportunity to own homes.

A two-bedroom Guyana hardwood house project by a wood products importing firm was unveiled last Saturday.

Owner Guyanese-Barbadian Rohit Sugrim said production would start in January.

During a ceremony at his firm's main outlet in Six Roads Industrial Park, St Philip, Sugrim unveiled the first model house, 30 feet by 22 feet priced at $95 000.

Buyers can obtain it on a "turn key" basis but will have to buy their own land. A three-bedroom version with 792 square feet will also be available in January along with the smaller model.

Sugrim said he was pleased to offer the homes at a relatively low price.

Chairperson of the National Housing Corporation (NHC), Marilyn Rice-Bowen, praised the venture.

Also on hand was Guyana's Honorary Consul Norman Faria who commended Sugrim on the project.

Faria stated that over the last decade a number of "quality control measures" such as grading of wood products had been instituted at the Guyana end by entities such as the Forest Products Marketing Council, the Guyana Forestry Commission and the Guyana Office for Investment and Exports. (PR)

We gone to the foreigners : 11/19/2009
I had a similar venture about 7 yrs ago but no assistance for the previous government and my price was $60,000BDS . I was not greenheart wood but a more environmental friendly material , pest resistant, fire proof and fitted with all British Standard requirement under the health and safety Act 1974.
As for the quality control measures , I cant swallow that ,cost it only take a few dollars to get ceritified out of a country like Guyana , and I can tell the nation that.
I find that bajans like new faces and accents, outsider away get recognize.
As for purchasing ,who barbadian working for $500 per wk could purchase a house for that price in 15 yrs your repayment on a mortgage will be $195,000 . what the goverment should do is inject a percentage for first time buyers giving person more incentive to go on the property ladder and owning a piece of the rock , but agian if you dont have land that another issue , you have to buy for $100,000 or more . It time for we to start building multi storey building for our people and leave the bit of sugar cane and plantations we have.
WE need more local investor
Its a shame ,I didnt get the assistance with duty free concession
