THE CRANE RESORT will conduct daily checks on all sub-contracted workers to ensure that they are legally documented to work in this country.
The new policy came into immediate effect yesterday after 20 workers were reportedly rounded up, interviewed and removed from the St Philip hotel by the Immigration Department last Friday.
While Crane officials said the illegal workers were not hired by the resort but were employed by sub-contractors on the construction site, the hotel stated in a Press release yesterday that "from time to time, as part of the company's ongoing construction programme, The Crane utilises a range of small sub-contractors for various projects".
"These sub-contractors, based on the terms of agreement for their projects, are responsible for hiring their own workers and verifying their immigration status. All of the workers who were removed from the worksite were employed by sub-contractors
"The Crane has been fully co-operating with authorities, and resulting from Friday's occurrence, has instituted a new policy in which security is conducting daily checks of all sub-contracted workers to ensure their documents are in order before entering the worksite."
The Crane directly employs 431 workers: 329 in hotel operations and 102 workers on the construction site. (TM)
End the Xenophobia please! : 9/30/2009
If all the illegal workers are rounded up who will be left to do work in Barbados? Barbadians will not be able to compete on a global scale if the shoddy work ethic is continued. No one will replace a person who's work is good and who can make money, so the argument about illegals taking away jobs is not valid. Besides, these so called 'illegal immigrants' are only taking the jobs that Bajans don't want to do, like toil in hot sun. I don't see illegals taking over banking jobs, or government positions. Besides, most of the West Indians in the North America and Europe has to engage in 'illegal work' just to pay the bills, and send money back home in the 60s and 70s. You cannot love off white foreigners who take over businesses like Club Xtreme, and then scorn those who are honestly here to seek a better life. The xenophobia needs to end, or it will be the end of Barbados.
Crane clamps down on illegalss : 9/30/2009
Bajans come on thye same Immigration raids go on in big North America and nobody have to call them.Don't you all know that Cops get paid extra for bringing in plenty road tickets, especially at the end of the month.
: 9/30/2009
well i do hope they are humane about this
Subcontracting : 9/30/2009
This is another way of turning your back as long as the work is being done. Subcontractors are not ignorant of the law neither is the hotel. Unfortunately, this is Barbados and people can get away with whatever they want.
Crane clamps : 9/30/2009
I hope they also check all the guests before they accommodate them. they could be illegals. AH, does not matter as long as the money is legal. [just talking to myself] crazy bajan.
Checks : 9/30/2009
Security guards are not immigration officers. Some one have to check your ID at the door. That is nothing to do with finger prints at the airport. What I don't understand is why Barbadians have to take finger prints. They need a computer system at the ariport with all the passport numbers when you show your passport they see you finger prints beacuse the prints are in the passport along with your picture.
Security Guarda or Immigration Officers : 9/30/2009
So now we have given private security guards the power of immigration officers, and yet still complain that Immigration officers have not the legal right to fingerprint anyone. Our morning word contradicts our midday word.
