Jailed for beating ex-girlfriend

ALL OF JAMAL O'NEAL HURLEY'S CONVICTIONS are for his former girlfriend.
He has been convicted for assaulting her, threatening her and harassing her.
He's had to pay her compensation, been placed on a bond and has even been warned to stay away from her.
Yesterday, he got his first jail term for the latest offence against her.
"You need to work out that this lady is not for you. We need to recognise when people will lead you down the wrong path," Magistrate Christopher Birch told Hurley.
Hurley, 27, of Farm Road, Deacons Farm, St Michael, was in the Bridgetown Traffic Court yesterday, where he admitted he assaulted Shelly-Ann Gill occasioning her actual bodily harm on September 22.
"I ask she why she don't stop calling my mother and humbugging me," he said.
"She start to get on and I hit she," he added.
"In August 2007, you assaulted her and had to pay her compensation," Magistrate Birch noted as he examined Hurley's conviction card.
"That same year you threatened her and then in October 2008 you harassed her. Every charge you have is for her," the magistrate said.
"I think I need to separate you because the next time I see you, do you know what the next charge might be?" the magistrate asked.
"Murder," Hurley replied.
In the end, the magistrate jailed him for 90 days.
Prosecutor Sergeant Glenda Carter said Hurley and Gill had been in a relationship which ended years ago.
In September, the complainant was walking across Brighton Pasture when Hurley approached her and told her she had him in trouble with the law.
He then grabbed her, threw her to the ground and began to kick her about the body.
He only stopped when passers-by pulled him off her.

To the Blogger who suggest the lady moves away, Barbados is to small to move anywhere and feel safe. This is a serious situation and it seems inevitable that it will end quite ugly later on. Barbados experienced this type of act many moons ago and although Domestic Violence laws have since been enacted, they will never be able to stop people with a mindset as Hurley appears to have. The judges nor the police have the balls to adequate punish people in this country, everyone is looking to the other person to do something. You can drive drunk seriously injured a person and not get a day in prison, you can drive using a cell phone run a red light, put four people in the hospital for months and not get a day. We encourage lawlessness in this island. If I had the means I would take over this island like Castro did Cuba,and you would see change you can believe in.(we need Communism)

hedid not say he would murder her the judge told him the he has a history with the lady coming to court for attacking her so the judge impiled that at the rate he going he might just killer her

"We need to recognise when people will lead you down the wrong path" Am I to interpret from this comment that the Magistrate is suggesting that Mr. Hurley is not responsible for his behavior? That this lady caused him to be violent towards her? The other thing I find disturbing is that it takes 3 occasions before this perpetrator was jailed. We need batterers programmes for perpetrators urgently, clearly the methods of punishment that we are using are not working.

does`nt this girl have any male family,he doesn`t care and he is going to come out again,and he will sure kill her,its not right for someone to live in fear and cant walk the road as they like who the hell do he think he is i dont beleive in fighting violence with violence but he needs a man beating,men who beat women are cowards and ca`nt stand up to other men he needs to be beaten by another man and see how it feels.

There is a serious need for stiffer penalties for repeat offenders. The worse the violence the more severe the punishment. During these lengthy appeals the victims families should have a major say. You have got to do the time if you do the crime. Bajan to De Bone in the USA

The sentence was not harsh enough. There are too many of these incidents going on in Bim. Why do men think they own women and can physically abuse them. I don't understand how anyone can say they love someone and hurt them in this way. And quote "he only stopped when passers-by pulled him off" she is a lucky woman, who knows what damage he may have done had those people not passed. He needs to be kicked thrown to the ground and kicked to see how it feels. Shame on you. A man that lacks self-control and an ability to express himself in a more caring manner.

The law is really an ass .Only when a mad man /woman harms someone will he/sbe arrested and sent to the mental . Only when a man kills a woman does the laws seek to lock him up . In the mean time the woman has to take the blows or hide in China . Restraining orders ! waht are those .She is mine an no one else will have her .

Why is the punishment so small for all that violence against some one especially a female? How then are we sending a strong message for the continued abuse against our females?? For a God fearing Nation, where is the love and respect for our females who go hand in hand with God to give birth and nurture our babies through thick and thin? This Jamal is going to kill his ex girlfiend one day I think for her sake she needs to move away if possible from that area and make new life for herself and sever all contact from his family for the time being because he is going to come out of prison an angry man and by his past actions he does not care what the law does to him he has some sort of sick obsession with his ex girlfriend
