BABY IN A BAG

Jerome Jarreau pointing to the area under these grape trees where he found a newborn baby in a tied plastic bag.

Published on: 9/27/2009.

by MARIA BRADSHAW

A NEWBORN BABY who was found inside a tied plastic bag, with the umbilical cord still attached, on Fitts Village Beach, St James, yesterday evening is alive and doing fine.

The baby girl was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) by ambulance where she was admitted to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit for observation.

When contacted yesterday, Dr Chaynie Williams, consultant in charge of the Accident & Emergency Department at the QEH, said the baby was healthy and doing fine. She said it was carried to term and would have been born within the last 24 hours.

Police described the baby as Caucasian with blue eyes.

Miracle baby

The newborn was being called a "miracle baby" by Jerome Jarreau, the man who found her hidden under a cluster of grape trees on the beach.

Jarreau said he was walking along the beach around 4:30 p.m. when he heard a faint cry from under the bushes.

"I tell myself somebody must be in there with a baby or it must be a monkey or something. I heard the crying again, so I went and look under the bush and I see something wriggling in a plastic bag. I burst open the bag and the baby look at me and let out a gasp and started to cry louder. I felt so relieved but scared," he said.

So shocking was the discovery that Jarreau ran up the beach where three people were standing and frantically told them about his find, but nobody moved.

"I told them to come that a baby in the bushes but I know I am Rastaman and they would think that I coming to rob them or something, so I told them that I telling the truth, to call the ambulance and the police. They were staring at me as if I was mad or making sport," he said.

Cord attached

Eventually the people did go over and see the baby. Jarreau said the umbilical cord was still attached as well as the afterbirth, and the blood in the bag was fresh.

But when somebody suggested cutting the cord, his protective parental instincts kicked in and he told them not to touch the baby.

The 28-year-old man said he instinctively ran over to the Jordan's Supermarket complex at the doctor's office there but it was closed. So he ran back to the baby and stood over her until the police and ambulance personnel arrived.

“This thing hurt me because I have two children and one is three months old. I know God was watching over this child,” he said.

Anthony Roopchand, who was on the scene when Jarreau found the baby, said he thought Jarreau was crazy when he saw him running up the beach shouting that he had found a baby.

Jarreau’s sister Joyann Walcott said she was hurt when she saw the baby lying in the plastic bag.
“She is such a sweet baby. I have christened her Shekinah’s Glory. She is in God’s hands.”

The residents said they hoped they would be able to visit the child at the hospital.
Police from the Holetown station cordoned the area where the baby was found and are investigating the matter.

Editor's note: Following this initial report, QEH staff have reported that the baby does not appear to be Caucasian but could not categorically confirm the infant's race.

To address the concern of the commenter 'Identity Crisis',the initial report that the baby was Caucasian came from a spokesperson of the Police Force. This is indicated in the article.

It worried me that the Nation wrote that the baby was caucasian. I said wow, they can tell just by looking at this child that it is caucasian, what a great insight of the reporter. No one can tell by just looking at an infant if it is caucasian or black. These reporters need to get things together, I think that the only qualification they must obtain is photography. Do they read or do any kind of research? Due to the fact that my great grand mother was caucasian, on my father's side, my mother said that my sister was born blond haired and blue eyed which caused a conflict since my father was black. My sister looked caucasian at birth but grew up and changed dramatically with brown hair and dark brown eyes but freckled none the less.

Miracle Baby: 9. 30. 2 009 : 9/30/2009
The newborn was being called a "miracle baby" by Jerome Jarreau, the man who found her hidden under a cluster of grape trees on the beach. The Holy angel was looking after this baby, and led Jerome Jarreau to past by the area at that precise time for the reason of finding the precious baby. I think the mother needs help if found..but please do not return the precious baby to her. There are lot of good people that are able to provide a safe and secure home for this little one. May the Father God cover this child with the blood of His Son, Jesus Christ.

The police have ruled out the 17 year-old being the mother. However, I'm of the opinion that whoever the mother is, she must have had help to deliver the baby from someone. I hope when the Police are questioning they are not only thinking of locating the mother but also aother persons of interest. Who knows the 17 yr old might have been interested because she may know who the mother is or was involved and is feeling guilty now the baby has bee found.

God gives life & only he detemimnes the outcome of anyones. Just so sad that a woman/girl felt so desperate & deranged that she could not talk to anyone or find another way out of the situation. I think of the people out there willing to snatch & kidnap ones who are wanted yet others are simply thrown away. Can only hope that like the story of Moses the mother's was to watch secretly from nearby & knows that her baby girl survived.

This is very horrific. Imagine if a stray dog had found that baby in the bag instead of this hero. No one knows the circumstances surrounding the mothers drastic action but she carried the baby to term and than did this. Who are u kidding! I say she had plenty of time to concoct this route of escape with very little regard for the sake of the new born. Such an act show cased her inhumane and sick side, particularly when one considers that the baby was basically dumped like garbage. IF anyone wants to be sympathetic than think about the horrible fate that could have befallen this precious little one. Then after you have extend sympathy to the baby, give some cheers and praise for this hero sent from God. But were the mother is concerned, I would say think twice.

SOME OF US ARE SO CRUEL: have compassion people. No normal person acting normally would do such a thing as what was done to this baby. This had to be a desperate situation. No rational person does something such as the commission of this act.

We are so quick to pass judgement on people without knowing the just cause. I'm not saying what the mother did was right but we don't know what drove her to do such. What I do know that whomever she is, she needs help. There is also a possibility that she might need to be charged but we won't know the full story until she is found. What we also know is that Mr. Jarreau needs to be commended for his actions. Mr. Jarreau, whether or not you are rewarded for your actions, it didn't go unnoticed. When you do good, good will come to you. Bajans we need to spend more time giving credit where credit is due, ínstead of passing judgement when we don't have the facts. Yes, we Bajans should be proud to know that we have such kind hearted young people in our society.

All the comments, so little sympathy. Black White Brown and yellow, the same fear, the same concerns for the future. I am happy that the mother had a safe delivery, and she does not contract an infection. As humans, we must embrace each other; many pregnancies would not occur if we just love a little more. Any prick hard can scew!

Abandoned Baby : 9/28/2009
Before we go casting stones let us understand that no one knows the circumstances surrounding the even, here in Canada you can take the baby at any hospital and drop it off after it is born.I am not sure how it is back home. Sometimes people make decisions when they are scared and think there's no way out.Yes it was a horrible thing for her to do but I don't think the mother would have done it if she was thinking clearly and thought that there was a solution.I am by no means condoning the act but don't just go handing down judgement before the facts are known .

I am no detective or medical person but, surely a baby in a tied plastic bag could not live long especially in the heat. The person who placed this baby under the grape bushes must have only done this minuet before she was discovered. Did no-one see a person around acting suspicious? So glad there is a happy ending for this child, and hopefully the mother can be helped emotionally and medically too. good luck wisher....

BABY IN A BAG : 9/28/2009
If GOD didn't use the Rastaman to find the baby, He would've used another person. GOD is not running out of people! But we collectively thank him for notifying the authorities about the baby's presence under the grape trees. I don't know the mother nor have we heard from her concerning this despicable act. But I'm quite pleased that she didn't abort her baby while carrying it. That would've been a million times more cruel than leaving the baby on the beach, in my view. Now the little girl has hope and I pray for a happy outcome. Perhaps GOD will use her if she grows into adulthood to save babies. Now that would be the perfect outcome, don't you think? GOD often takes a bad situation and brings good from it.I like the Rastaman's sister's suggestion of naming the baby Shekinah. Surely the glory of GOD is upon this little girl.

I am a new mother and I love my daughter. When I see her smile, my day is so much better..no matter how bad it was. I can't imagine what would prompt this woman to do this!!! It is tragic!!! I am going to say a prayer for this baby because I know when she is old enough to comprehend what happened, she is going to be so sad at times. There are people I know who can't have children and would love to have and I ask myself why do the people who want to love and nurture and take care of a child are'nt able to have. May God Bless YOU Jerome. You are a true HERO for being persistent and not giving up!!! Tears are in my eyes for this baby!...To 'Shekinah's Glory'...God will provide loving parents for you...He has already shown you your Angel.

It is a good thing that Mr.Jerome Jarreau found the baby before it was too late. Thank God for that. We do not know the curcumstances under which the baby ended up on the beach in a plastic bag. It is easy to make assumptions and quick judgments but ask yourself this... Why would a mother carry a baby for 9 month, give birth to it and then put it in a plastic bag on the beach? Could a woman after giving birth to a baby, have the energy to put the baby in a plastic bag and take it to the beach? Well then probably other people were involved in this and we do not know if she was forced to do this or what the curcumstances were. We have to pray for those person involve in this act and thank God for sending Mr.Jerome Jarreau to rescue this baby. If it was as simple as giving up the baby for adoption maybe that would have been done but again we don't know the curcumstances or the person's state of mind. I hope the mother can get help, I know it will bother her for the rest of her life and I'm sure other people who knew her will be curious about what happend to the baby she was carrying... Remember the child must've had a father & grand parents & aunts & uncles etc. so this is not something that can be hidden so easily and with it all over the news I'm sure they are a lot of people who know more than they are saying... Anyway thank God for the rescue, thanks also to Mr.Jerome Jarreau, and may God help the people who abandoned that baby and left it to die.

: 9/28/2009
Fortunately this is an un heard occurance in Barbados but in countries like the USA and UK this happens and luckiy these babes have been found by members of the public or even people walking their dog late at night or early morning. Usually the family of these women/young girls who abandon their babies have no idea they are pregnant not even the father of the child knows, also she might be still at school. Psychologically she has totally dis-associated herself from the pregnancy and the birth she needs help even if she is never found by authorities she will need to seek psychological help in the future.

what a lucky escape for the little girl, who could have so easily died, this man should get the recognition he deserves for saving a childs life. and just to note, those who have commented on the girls mother, in particular "smartz", how close minded can you be. why must she be a teenager, whose parents dont know she was pregnant? the article states the baby was term, who can truly say they carry a baby for all of 9 months with nobody noticing, unless they are severely overweight. whoever the mother was, should be ashamed of what they have done, but im sure every day will have to cope with their actions. im sure however she will have heard the news that her child has been found and is well, and this will probably be some consollation to her.

There are plenty of women out there, myself included, who cannot conceive naturally. This hurts my heart that someone will just throw away a beautiful baby like if it is just garbage. I can't imagine what really happened. My mind is tellin me somehow that the mother's parents made her do that - was there blood on the beach - by the eyewitness reports no - this person had that baby in a room or car somewhere and she and her man or parents decided to get rid of it that way - the horror that took place is too eerie......anyway people like me who want children so badly and can't conceive and then people around the place doing these things

Would would do such a thing? More than likely this person came to Barbados with this evil intent just like some who in the past have traveled from the island on "vacation" to the USA to have their abortions and may have already left the island. Thanks be to God that she did not kill this precious infant. After the dust is settled this Rasta man (Mr. Jerome Jerreau)and his sister Joyann should be given this baby to raised (blue eyes and all) with the help of the welfare department and whoever else would want to contribute. Again this goes to show that there is good within all of us regardless of our religion, outward appearance or others assessment of us.

It's obvious that the woman has something to hide. Maybe she is in school and doesn't want the child to get in the way of her education. What ever the reason her way of dealing with it was absolutely wrong. This is clearly attempted murder and WHEN found, she should have to pay for this hideous act. Although Jarreau and his sister should be lauded for resucing the baby,I think that the choice of who gets to become the legal parents should be well thought out -the environment and possible influenecs included. May good judgement prevail in such an important decision.

There is absolutely, in this day and age, no excuse for anyone to discard a child like it is trash! Sure, the mom may have been young but unless she was raped, she was old enough to have sex, wasn't she? I am a gyn nurse and see scared, young pregnant girls on a daily basis who are aware of their options. Never do they mention giving birth and throwing the child away. I recommend punishments get more severe when it comes to this sort of thing. Only then will young mothers learn the seriousness of this matter. Barbados is a beautiful island. I come over yearly via cruise to visit family and will return next year for 1 week during cropover season. My grandparents were born and raised there. This, in no way, will change my view of this spectacular island! See you next year my beautiful Bejans!

I think it would be better for the universe if our energies were spent wishing positive thoughts for Shekinah. Depression and post partum depression are dieseses as real as Cancer, lets try to understand the emotional and physical pain the mother must have endured, While logically we cannot understand her actions, who are we to judge. My prayers for a positive outcome.

Baby in a bag : 9/27/2009
It takes two people to make a baby, and I am hoping that the mother had enough guts to let the father know that she was pregnant. I am also hoping that the father would come forward if he has any idea of the situation. This baby is a precious human being and should not have to go through being abandoned. I am sure that whatever situation the mother encountered, fear of both her and the future of her bay was on her mind. Whatever fear she had she should have reached out for help, and maybe she did.Only God knows, and only he can judge. I had my first child at the age of 18, and I spent most of my time pregnant worrying about my future as a young unwed mother and also about what my parents, family and people at the church was saying. If I did not have a spiritual upbringing I would have probably found myself either aborting the child or committing suicide, but I decided to keep my baby and take care of her no matter what. Today she is a beautiful, loving, caring intelligent and God fearing married woman, and I thank God for that. I hope that the mother of this abandoned child will ask God to forgive her for committing such a cruel act, and I hope that this precious baby girl will be healthy and have a decent and fullfill life. May God have mercy on us all. Bajan in Toronto

This story really hurts me because I am a mother-to-be and I cannot even fathom the thought of abandoning my child. Thank God Jerome was there to rescue the baby, I cannot begin to think of what would have happened had he not been at the right place at the right time. I would not truly express my thoughts about the mother; however all I would say is that she obviously is a child herself or else she would have thought it through a bit more before abandoning the newborn.

I figure the Mum is a young teenaged Caucasian girl on holiday or living in Bim with her parents. I would bet a million dollars her parents and maybe the father do not know that she was pregnant and she had no pre natal care. Furthermore, I also think that she had the baby cleaned herself up and ran back to her bed somewhere paralysed with fright. The police should start searching the villas in the area.

A Child-like Mind : 9/27/2009
Luckily the same weak mindset that thought of a child as garbage which could be dumped on a beach was not strong enough to kill the child outright but sought instead to suffocate it without even detatching the placenta. Placental blood probably supplied enough oxygen for it to survive for awhile.

My views : 9/27/2009
When i read this just now it sickened me to see that someone could do that to a child farless more a new born!! Excuse me for what i'm about to say, but she/whoever it is want killin she/he want puttin in a bag de say way she/he did that child and see how it feels not knowing if u gine get out or how u gine get out. I dont have any children but i lost someone not to long june 20th, a sweet little girl who passed away at 1 year old, she was my step-daughter i watched her from birth took her in like she was mine and the love i had and still have for that little girl mines or not, it hurts me/breaks my heart everytime i think about her or her cute little smile with those dimplez. but to do that to a child, come on man!!! dats.. i cant even find a word to call it, not even sayin that he/she left the child at the hospital after birth but on a beach in a BAG!!! if i had my way in this world d lord know what i woulda do to that person if i did find them. my father left me when i was 3yrs an i thank the lord for my mother who tried and did her best to put me where i am today and i love her for that and any child i get gine get all the love i have in my hear, a child is a blessing,if its 1 thing i would never do is leave my child behind cause i would never do it, it would never happen plus i would never follow in my fathers foot steps. I think i said enough, ppl come on man think b4 u act children are the future. thats just hurtful.... ( i my views most likely its a woman tht did it but i add in a (he) cause u never kno it could b a man involved in it too, meaning the woman could of been forced by the man/her partner to leave the child behind ). and to the residents, i hope u all get the rights to visit the child anytime you want.

when i read the story this morning it brought tears to my eyes to know how the mother of that baby went through nine months of labour and pain to do that to a child.there are people out there that want children but can't get any and there are some mothers that don't have a heart.i hope that the person that did this will be brought to justice. An irate Parent.

BABY IN A BAG : 9/27/2009
What are the chances of a Rasta finding a Caucasian baby on the Beach in Barbados? We are really far behind the times when we look at people and judge them for who they are or what they look like.

Thank You Jerome!!! : 9/27/2009
Thank You for acting on your best instincts. This child is alive today because of you. She will grow up to be someone great and the world will have you to thank for it. May the almighty continuously bless you. To the woman who left this child abandoned in a tied plastic bag to sufficate; you will get yours one day. You will live to regret this for the rest of your life. You are selfish and evil and deserve to be punished. Shame on you!!

Miracle Baby : 9/27/2009
Oh my gosh.. what kind of desperate situation would prompt a person to perform such an act. I pray this comes back to haunt you and you are forced to face this horrible act. You need to speak to the father and seek help

: 9/27/2009
this is really hurtful and i'm still in shock and really confuse to how a woman could do this to her own flesh and blood. i'm a new mother to this world and there is no way that i could even think close enough to a thought of doin such a thing but i do hope that the police get to the bottom of this and fast.

This is the saddest thing I have read in a while. How could a mother be so detached from a child she has carried for nine months? There are so many women out there who would love to experience motherhood but cant... Only God can explain such an unfair world.

Caucasian wow!!!! : 9/27/2009
Caucasian wow!!! It hard to believe that someone would do something like that, and a white person??My only hope is that god would soften the heart of mother allowing her to come foward and claim this child

baby found : 9/27/2009
well jureau, you did a good job although people ignored you, you persisted and eventually made that baby safe. It reminds me a part of the bible with joseph, when the princesses found him. You are god's prince because he is no respect of person. I know god will bless you for that. People have to stop judging others, but on the other hand I could understand why the folks on the beach took percaution and didnt notice you. They couldve said well lets call the police or something. I am glad this turned out a good story.

Exodus 2 : 9/27/2009
As they say... there is nothing in the past that is strange in today's world ! This same thing happened in Exodus ch 2 . Check it out. Then again, short of two years agao, a baby was found in the corridor of our very hospital and the legislation on our statute books was too much a joke to deal with it. So, i'm NOT surprise with such a identical issue ! The question is though, will the father of this child be bold enough to come forward for DNA testing ?

Thank God you came along at the right time. I hope the mother will be brought to justice for her inhumane act. How can anyone take this miracle and try to destroy it. may God continue to bless you.
