Arthur: Disservice done to the BLP

Published on: 10/28/2009.

FORMER PRIME MINISTER Owen Arthur did not attend Monday night's vote-off at the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) headquarters, because he saw it as an ultimatum leading to an "oath of allegiance" to Mia Mottley - both of which did a disservice to the BLP.

In response to his absence from the parliamentary group meeting, which saw Mottley reaffirmed as political leader and Leader of the Opposition, Arthur said yesterday he could not attend based on the way Mottley had sought to deal with the evident leadership challenge within the BLP.

"I could not possibly attend the meeting to deal with a [leadership] problem that she said doesn't exist, that I have told the public does not exist, and that the party is aware does not exist.

"It was a disservice to the party that it had to take place by way of a n ultimatum by Ms Mottley. It has also put the members of the parliamentary group in an invidious and unfavourable light in the public domain," he told the media at his University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus office yesterday.

Arthur said he had "no interest or desire in leading the country or the party", noting that Mottley herself had gone on record saying there was no power struggle in the BLP.

However, he added, there was an issue pertaining to the BLP's leadership in the wider community, and Mottley had handled it in a way that "does a great disservice to the BLP".

Arthur said the leadership issue "cannot be confronted by the issue of a public ultimatum for members of the parliamentary party to assemble at short notice to swear what I can only call oaths of allegiance! It has to be dealt with in a constructive manner".

"And that's why I feel the manner in which it has been dealt with, and that it has been brought to the public at all, is a disservice to the BLP because the parliamentary party . . . would have been convened to deal with an issue and a problem that the leader said does not exist.

"In such circumstances, I could not possibly attend Monday's meeting," Arthur stated, adding that his attendance would have been unnecessary.

Arthur also said he had spoken to colleagues early on Monday and asked for the parliamentary group meeting to be postponed until tomorrow (Thursday), thereby giving members time to consult beforehand. (RJ)

Maybe there is something that Mr. Arthur knows about his deputy that the people don't know. Don't fault him for what is happening. Working and living with people are the two best ways of knowing them.

The Survey : 10/28/2009
It seems as though the Peter Wickam poll was useful enough. Run another one. What do the people have to say now? What would be the results? Perhaps they can be 2 separate polls, one done by Ms. Mottley and one done by Mr. Arthur. Please find another leader quick. Looking troublesome.

Rules Change? : 10/28/2009
You Mr Arthur set a lot of the rules of which i am sure the present members of the BLP are playing by and now that you have been benched you want to get back on the field of play. This game has already started and wont be over till the final whistle ie the next general election. as any player of team sports would agree, a team is only as strong as its weakest player...dont be that spoilt player who believes that he is better then everyone else...in football as in most sports, when the captain is substituted he passes on the arm band to another player for the remainder of the match...Ms Mottley is now your captain and you should let her run the tactics on the field of play as she sees fit till the final whistle or bell in this case is blown or rung after all you were once her coach and as such it is your duty to stand there on the sidelines and offer your support and rally the team and the crowd on to victory!!!

Mai Mottley : 10/28/2009
I like Mr, Owen Arthur and I also like Mai Mottley because they are two of a kind. They big egos. It is their way or no way. There a lots of things that Mr. Arthur did for the fourteen years that his party was in power that I was pleased about. But when he got too high and mighty and away from the poor bajan people doing and selling what ever bids his fancy he lost for the majority of the people in Barbados. He had fourteen years with no economic crisis, the whole world was flourishing with money, economy was good all over the world. Mr. Arthur had a good fourteen years. No problem at all. Meanwhile the masses were getting discourage with you leadership. So come election the people of Barbados handed the BLP a whipping. I don't think that your party have gotten over the defeat yet. It is time to get over the defeat and help Barbados is these economic hard times, not only in Barbados but in the Caribbean countries, American of all places where thousands of peoplr are being laid off every day and the big greedy CEO are still stealing people's money. People who have retired at 65 years lost their 401K and have to return to work again. Please all you people that are complaining please roll up your shirt sleeves and help little Barbados out of this recession. When America gets out of the recession the whole world will benefit by it. President Obama came into office with the same difficulties that Mr. Thompson came into office with. Every one who read about the American politic would see that Mr. Obama is catching hell from his oponents. I pray to God that He will give them strength, guidance, patience and a love and pray for his oppressors. Remember I am neither a BLP or a DLP. I am a honest and sincere Barbadian and will tell it like I see it. I hope that this comment does not affend any body especiall the Nation Paper and I hope that the paper will print my comment. Thank you for letting me write in your paper and may GOD bless your paper, the present government and the people of Barbados. Bajan in Boston.

Disservice to taxpayers. Wasn't this press conference called at the UWI when Arthur should have been at Parliament working on behalf of the people of St. Peter, for the taxpayers money he receives?

Owen needs to elaborate on his accusations against Mia. Based on what he said one can conclude that he dislikes her leaderships style and he is entertaining gossip from all and sundry against Mia. Why don't he just cross the floor like Clyde Mascoll did and see if he can coach David Thompson?

You Had Your Time : 10/28/2009
Ok. We know that politicians have big egos and a somewhat addiction to power. However, Mr. Arthur needs to realise that he became party leader in very controversial circumstances and came out alright. So did PM Thompson. If the people wanted you, you'd be PM today. Relax. It's David's and Mia's time. You had yours. Let go and help the youngsters.

Give it Up

Bacchanal in the Bee Hive : 10/28/2009
Well, I must admit that for the first time I feel sorry for Mia. If the vote was as Mr. Arthur termed it "a disservice to the party", his "meeting with the press" was a greater disservice and a sure dagger in the hopes of the BLP regaining power in two years. The fact that he did not vote coupled with his "discussions" on the events will cause the masses who follow him blindly to discard what little confidence they had before in Ms. Mottley. The lesson from this is never step on a lion's tail even if it looks like just a cub.....

ULTIMATUM : 10/28/2009
Here we have it a FRIVOLOUS ULTIMATUM looks somewhat like HUGO from "down the street." What would have happened if the vote had not confirm her--would she had thrown a vicious tantrum and start a third political party? What is up her sleeve? Is she so power hungry? Is this the type of leader this country would have if the BLP comes to power? Are we deserving of such? In our wildest imagination can we fathom such? We do not think so. Added to all the other "alternatives" this leader projects dictatorship and bordering on throwing a tantrum if she does not get aher way disqualifies her from the office of PM.WAKE UP PEOPLE--- ALL THE ECONOMIES OF THE WORLD ARE STRUGGLING GIVE MR. THOMPSON A CHANCE TO RIDE OUT THIS STORM.

BLP In Trouble : 10/28/2009
A party that is divided cannot stand. Mia Mottley you should take a loot at Gordon Brown in UK who was deptuty prime minister and was bold enough to ask when is Tony Blair leaving. Now he is prime minister he is getting real licks (pardon the pun). You need the support of Owen Arthur because he has a lot of experince and that is what you don't have. The public loves him but he is saying that the public would never vote for you. I wonder why? You were his deputy prime minister so I will have to listen to him because he knows things that I don't know. A word to wise is enough.

Mia and Owen : 10/28/2009
That is why Barbados did not go with Owen. He refused breakfast with Thompson and he is to quick to judge before seeing the picture. I will not be going with Owen either. Hats off to Mia, now stop the noise and lets get back to work.

I'm with Mia

Curious : 10/28/2009
HERE IS AN EXTREMELY SIMPLE POINT AND THE ONLY QUESTION BARBADOS AND OWEN ARTHUR HAS TO ANSWER RIGHT NOW: HOW IS IT THAT AS ALLEGED BY OWEN ARTHUR - THE ENTIRE COUNTRY WANTS HIM TO COME BACK BUT NOT THE EIGHT PEOPLE IN THE OPPOSITIONS, WHO GIVEN THE REPRESENTATION OF THE PEOPLE ACT - COLLECTIVELY REPRESENT SOME 40,000 PEOPLE?

The Riddler

: 10/28/2009
Mia is potentially a good if not great leader but as is the case with assertive strong women, she sometimes appears to be an overly bombastic female. There would have been no need to test for the loyalty and support of her colleagues if the majority of the public had a positive view of her and her leadership style. She needs to be a little more debonair in her approach somewhat like Hillary Clinton. On the other hand, Owen is apparently hurt by the proceedings but all he needed to say was that Mia is the undisputed leader of the party and he was providing her space to establish herself as leader. Owen should now keep quiet from now on except when dealing with issues affecting the welfare of Barbadians. If Mia is not a good leader, she will lose support. Just let things happen.

What a hot mess this woman is. Come now, you have to do better than this. Stop trying to be a bully, that's one of the problems we are facing with the youth, show some class when addressing the public. Seems you and the same Arthur were cut from the same cloth. Stop the bullying. KRIS

: 10/28/2009
Ms. Mottley, u need to address your image. Buy yourself a suit. Give Portia Simpson Miller a call. Peace!

MIA : 10/28/2009
what you got to say tell us who want your job and can you reply to OWEN are you power hungry if you get to lead the nation of BARBADOS WHAT MORAL route will you take declare your hand now no bluffing is it all about you not party or country ? why did you cause this mess if nothing is wrong what are you fixing the higer the monkey go up you see his tale

THE WRITING.... : 10/28/2009
The writing is on the wall. Miss Mottley borders a bit on being too aggressive. We have to be careful as leaders. We are not accustomed to dictatorship type leadership here. It would be in her best interest NOT to respond to Mr. Arthur's press conference; it might show her in a more negative and antagonistic light.

Psychotic
