Rowdy students rule

THE OFTEN DISCUSSED bad behaviour of schoolchildren on minibuses was witnessed by two SATURDAY SUN readers last Friday, and they took these pictures as proof. And, coincidentally, it involved the same bus travelling from Speightstown to The City. The first picture was taken in Black Rock by one reader and it shows the children sitting atop the back seat. They were being very rowdy, she reported. The second was taken by the other reader minutes later in Baxters Road where many of the children were jumping from the windows of the bus while it was at the bus stop opposite Jordan’s Supermarket.

Published on: 11/7/2009.

A GROUP OF ROWDY students took over a minibus travelling from Speightstown, St Peter, to The City last Friday.

In Black Rock, St Michael, a woman who heard the noise coming from the minibus and saw the behaviour of the children, began to take pictures with her camera.

"The noise coming from the bus and the students sitting on the top of the back seat caught my attention, so I snapped two photos. Just after I did, a police jeep going in the opposite direction turned around . . . just past Uniforms Unlimited and went to deal with the situation," she said.

Up to press time, police were unable to tell us if the driver was reported, but the same bus was photographed minutes later in Baxters Road, The City, by a passenger aboard a Transport Board bus behind them.

"The children were behaving badly, on top of the back seat, hitting the bus, cursing, bodies sometimes leaning out of the bus window - it was disgusting," she said.

"When the bus stopped by Jordan's [Supermarket], girls and boys fly through the window. It was unbelievable," the civil servant added.

The SATURDAY SUN contacted the owner of the bus yesterday, who did not speak with us.

The principal of the school was unaware of the incident, but said: "So far this school year I've not received any negative comments about behaviour aboard the PSVs . . . ." (SP/PA)

It has nothing to do with licks, the parents, the principals, school or nothing like that. The children will do what the children want to do when away from the above mentioned examples. JMO :)

I went to School in Barbados in the 70s and children were behaving bad on the buses so what is new nothing except these days adults are not allowed to say anything to a child back then someone would tell your parents or the bus driver put you off the bus. The sad thing is these children are setting themselves up for a big fall no education/qualification no job

Bajan re parents to blame, what are you saying, its not clear!!

PARENTS TO BLAME : 11/12/2009
They all need lashes! Blame the parents, they are the ones who don't care, so you know what lash the parents and the children and then maybe they would get some respect for themselves!

All the drivers care about is the $, fine the and the parents, pull the Bus off the road if this don't stop.Stop this now before it's too late. it's only a matter of time before Bim gets to bad for locals and visitors alike.

Some parents don't have the time... : 11/11/2009
So if their parents can't properly use any means to discipline their child, and if the teachers which might be the only source of discipline for some children can't use anything available to them you have to expect this problem to grow. Not shrink.

Rowdy students/rowdy drivers : 11/10/2009
I, a bajan happy to be home in my Barbados, took a zr van to christchurch and halfway there the driver put me out and said that he was not going any further.A good thing it was not night time when I was left on the streets. Exactly where are their rules? It is not easy when we bring our little dollars to Barbados to be treated so lawlessly. Heaven help us because we insist on coming back home.

Teach Them Respect : 11/10/2009
Well that was the first and one too many negative report. There is no action taken now because the parents of today's children are very quick to defend their deviant off-spring for misdeeds. If you speak to a child doing wrong in your community, the parent is upset. Ask the older persons of this island how many persons took a turn in correcting them? It was better for them if their parents were the ones to witness any bad behavior and not the neighbour first because that meant another set of lashes. I agree that lashes is not the solution, but training a child starts in the home. Teach children respect for themselves as well as others, that is at least a beginning. Some parents have not lost control, they never had any in the first place. We knew full well in our day that the bus drivers were able to drive a bus with unruly persons straight to a police station. That is what this driver should have done. He is not a babysitter, but at the same time this behaviour should not be encouraged. there should be some way of directing my hardearned money each month to the under-priviledged children of poorer nations. They deserve a chance, not those ungrateful excuses for children that exhibit such unruly behaviour.

..and they say all schools are on the same 'level'? lol. They are also against flogging. More lol. Nothing like this ever happened where I went to school on Constitution Road. Go figure.

I walked : 11/9/2009
I walked to school- primary and secondary schools. I walk to many other places, in the old time days, 25 years ago and have respect for authority and value people and their properties. I had parents, but some of these youngsters are the products of people who wanted a child for themselves and men who when out only to "got she." Prey tell me how 2 selfish people can produce anything else but what is happening in Barbados. God had no part in the produce. Some of the churches are teaching "bring the money" Course, "Come and stay as you are" Seminar, and "Nothing is Unclean" Program. So, reason tells the youth that nothing is consistent, nothing is true, anything goes, because they can do anything without supervision and or without being told what is right and what is wrong. Even the teachers don't tell the students that their answer is incorrect; they say that is not the answer I am looking for. You are wrong and therefore we will not rear children but Kids. (baby sheep and goats!)

First, Second and Third Law Enforecers : 11/9/2009
When we wait on the law enforcers, we forget the the first 3 law enforcers starts in the home with the parents, and extended family members. 166 Sq. miles of madness and a lot of people are going to get hurt. Just 30 years ago we had control of the youth and 29 years ago we let it go. So, today the nation will import those who will rule over the idiots of this land. And, all that has to be done is let those leaders look a little bit different, and speak with a differnt accent, and pretent that they don't see you until they want you to do some manual labor and you will be happy, idiots! Tear down what you have and don't think that you will ever get to control what belong to others.

Take precaution : 11/9/2009
As I read the comments I am reminded that these minibuses played very loud and sometimes vulgar music, some music incites bad behavior in people. Therefore the minibus drivers should turn down the music, and play music to relax the passengers: The conductors on these buses should not allow impertinence on their buses. Should these students that exit through the windows of the buses be hurt the bus owners should be sued for millions of dollars: For improper protection of its passenger. Only them will the owners, drivers, and conductors take seriously rowdiness on the buses could endanger the public's lives. One CRIPPLED OR DEAD BODY are one too many. Parents do you know what your kids are doing? May God help us all.

Blame somebody else!! : 11/9/2009
In reading these posts below this is the only conclusion I have come to. As a young female in my 20s, I cannot help but watch this Barbadian society pass the buck in one way or another! ALL WE DO IS TALK. Very few of us take action! Everyone wants government and authorities to do something but it is OUR society that has the problem. We all need to do something. I get very annoyed when I see school children behaving this way, but you see we adults often encourage this. On a trip to town in a Transport Board bus. The driver passed a group of boys from St. Leonard's School. They cursed and banged on the bus but the driver kept on, he had seating and standing room. When I got out of the bus, I congratulated him for not stopping. Why? Of those ten plus children, none stood out as descent: shirt tails were flying, earrings sparkled, no ties and the list goes on. That driver did something many of us wouldn't dare to do because they are not ours and we don't care! We can change situations ourselves without having to wait on authorities. The problem this society faces is that we don't bind together and help each other for the good. Having provided the instance above, if there was a chain reaction of continual good. These children would have learnt a lesson. We Barbadians have become to selfish and the results are present in our children. Let us stop blaming authorities and blame yourselves!!!

Simple some parents in Barbados have lost control of their children, i.e the children do not respect their parents do not care what they say have no respect for adults, their teachers etc. Unfotunately these said parents behave exactly the same way when there were children so what example can they set their children everyone is so materialistic these days. I am an adult with grown up children and to this day I would not even dream about swearing at my mother even when she is wrong about something my children we may argue and disagree about Things but at the end of the day they have to be respectful

Rowdy behaviour : 11/9/2009

Noise is a distraction .Alcohol is too .Some of these drivers drink alcohol while driving . STOP BLAMING THE POLICE . Some of you are the same ones who criticize the police when they stop these fools in their bad behaviour .Some of you are the ones who say that the police should look for the real criminals .Once small and left unnoticed it will become a big problem . Here we have it . The owners the parents the children all need to share the blame along with the conductors and drivers and the commuters who say nothing and just go along for the ride.

: 11/9/2009
Let me say it again, parents in Barbados need to start parenting again. Back in the day, we were taught that our behaviour reflected on our family. Therefore we were always on our Ps and Qs.Plus, the school uniform had to be respected as your school was identifed by your school uniform and word got back to the Principle or teacher about your disorderly conduct.Today's youth have no respect for anyone, not even themselves. I totally agree with the person who said the the police(undercover) should ride the PSV and observe the behaviour of these school children. The PSV's drivers should also enforce order on their buses. Rowdiness should not be tolerated and any kid caught misbehaving should be put off the bus and band from every getting on that bus again. Free bus fare for school children should be time limited. Mr.Thompson, your youth is the Island's future, so stop talking and starting doing before the Island's future gets any worse.

The Voice of Reason : 11/9/2009
I just hope that everyone realises that these are not the same children from 15yrs ago, in fact, those ones are probably the parents now. Why in all this has no one asked the parents what they think. The government, police, teachers, PSV drivers and owners ought not to be responsible for rearing children. That is the job of parents. So we take away people's livelihood and jail them because parents refuse to teach children basic respect and good manners. All these comments seem to place the responsibility for children's behaviour on everyone EXCEPT parents! How odd.

: 11/9/2009
In these days of modern technology,PSV drivers have cell phones and should be able to call the police, when the bad behavior becomes unbearable for the other passengers, or becomes detrimental to his judgement as the driver. They should be a special number for them to call that will despatch the police to the route. I live in New York, and at the front of all city buses were the destination is displayed, their is an electronic indicator where if the driver or the passengers are in danger on the bus. The destination can be switched to say (Call the Police) the public seeing the sign will know that the driver and passengers are in danger and, and will call the police to aid the driver. All PVS vechicals including Transport board buses should be mandated to carry these signs, an use them when the situation is warranted for everyone's safety. Noise is a distraction, and driving while distracted is a major public safety issue. If students know that they behavior will be monitored, and that the police will just be a telephone call away, then maybe their behaviour will change. bajanjoy,N.Y.

Here we go again . and again and again : 11/9/2009
ANDDDDD. This is nothing to be alarmed about .1) The driver is wrong because he has the wheel in his hand .If it was a fight he would want to put them off. 2) The conductor is wrong because he is the one who tells the driver to stop or not to . Duhhhh CONDUCT. 3) The parents that have unruly children that know they are unruly but are trying to convince themselves not me or other right thinking people that they are otherwiise . 4) The owners are wrong because they need to give their workers a flat salary and not just ask for a certain amount per day or week then they would not be hustling . These psv's would kill you during the day and when night you cannot get one to get home .b) All the little boys the owners are hiring they need to look for serious and mature workers . 5) The children need to behave and know that they are not 2 years old . They are not putting their own lives in danger but other innocent passengers and road users . Have you seen the one where the conductor jumps out the bus in motion and presses the button on the traffic lights so that the approaching psv would have to say stop because the signals go on walk . Who say these people aint sick.

Not the PSV's at fault : 11/8/2009
I used PSV's when the big vans were in their hay day to get home from school and I NEVER behaved that way. Why not ? Because I knew better as I had been taught better. Regardless of what PSV staff did or did not do I knew I was responsible for myself. Stop blaming the PSV's for the products of inept parents.

: 11/8/2009
Its all very well stating that the police, and the public should moniter or boycott these buses, however, the parents of all children using public transport need to address their child's behvaviour with them whether they think that their children are involved or not, to many parents expect and view that schools are childminding services when in fact they are there to educate the children, not teach them good manners, respectfulness and basic consideration for others, neither is it the job of the police or members of the unassuming public to teach these children the above necessary life skills. Unfortunately yet another example of passing the buck

: 11/8/2009
You know what - I hate to say it - but it seems to me like the Authorities are waiting for that terrible accident to happen and then maybe, just maybe someone will deal with this. This is not the first time that there was photographic evidence depicting this sort of behaviour. Really, it shouldn' be allowed. If the Authorities can't deal with the drivers deal with the Owners. I suggest that once a PSV driver has three violations the vehicle should be off the road for 3 months or a fee of $5,00, payable by the owner. They would soon take note of whom they employ as drivers. Some drastic action is needed. There should be a section within the traffic court to deal with these cases urgently. I also think that the commuters have an important role to play, boycott the offending vehicles they will soon conform or go out of business.

Hum!!!!! : 11/8/2009
Now you want to tell me it is the children fault why the driver who has control did not address this problem.Number two that is why teachers in Bim do not bother to teach them anything, who need stress.Number three since flogging seems to be a crime why goverment don't get creative with all their degrees and bring a solution. Finally some of these children parents just past 21yr's who is to blame.

Old Story : 11/8/2009
I finished school in 1989 and this was going on since i was in third form in 1987 and before that, this is 2010 count those years the government is not serious just a lot of hot air,my advise is to ban the minibuses and the ZRs take away their permit a lot of conductors and drivers is the head of this problem put an operating age 35+ to drive or conduct on these buses the driver and conductors are also engaging in sexual intercourse and giving free bus rides to these children this is something that i know and it was going on for many years.

Deal with them harshly : 11/8/2009
What has happened to the children in Barbados? The drivers are responsible. How can you have students behaving like this on your PSV and continue to drive it. I say step on the brakes hard send them flying (not too much to hurt them just shake them up)and them put them out. Any driver caught with students behaving like this should be fined. As for students they free rides should end after a certain time of the day. How about a curfew for school age kids? Apparently parents do not. These kids should ebtaken to the police staion and left for parents to pick them up and pay a fine or they should be given community service cleaning up the streets (needs doing anyway)in a bright orange jumpsuit so that they stand out. They need to be embarrassed in a BIG way.

WHY!!!! : 11/7/2009
I am totally appalled at the disgusting ways these young persons are carrying on...Why blame the the innocent operator of the motor vehicle? His responsibility is to carry them safely to and from school, and if these hooligans acts irresposibility whose fault is it? They are young up and coming adults of the future of the island,if they can't get it together now, only GOD blessing will hopfully help them in the future..You do it once shame on you,You do it twice deserve to be punished heavily, detention, next suspension and then expelled from school....

I agree with SAM. One day the Bishop should loose his colar and robe and board one of these buses, chances are that none of these kids will recognise him,Growing up, all of the kids in my time knew Bishop Draxel Gomez. The Police Comissioner should also down his uniform and like the Bishop,he too board a bus,but please don't arrest anybody, just observe. I hope to return to Barbados one day to work with these School children, too many adults chastise them but none ever take the time to sit with one of them to see where they can help with this problem. Believe me you can help more than you think.

These poor children are not to blame . Evidently, they have no parental training, perhaps they are the products of teenagers, who themselves have no respect or parenting skills.

Behaviour in PSV : 11/7/2009
It is unfortuante that persons are now realizing that the behaviour being displyed on these vehicles is deplorable. Everyone is calling for action but I wish to suggest solutions. These solutions require a number of groups within society to act together, They are: The Police - continue what you are doing and keep up the vigilance. The Public - boycott those vehicle and ban your kids from taking these vehicles. Continue to take pictures and flood the media and Police with them. Remember a picture paints a thousand words. The owners of these vehicles - you need to be more responsible with who you hire to drive these vehicles. Vicarious liability needs to be extended to you if a driver with a bad record is hired by you. You need to identify which is more important money or your passengers. The Ministry (Gov) - time to let PSV owners and driver know that this behavior is not acceptable and punishment for persistant violations will be to disallow the operation of that vehicle for months not weeks. Gone are the days for chatting, any action by all will have eny chance of curbing this behaviour.

What happened to the good old days - if we were seem misbehaving our parents knew before we arrived home and there were no telephones. We would never dare misbehave wearing our uniforms - could be faced with a detention or as a worse case scenario - expelled. I knew of 2 students that were expelled from St. Michaels - one for stealing 25 cents and the other for "cursing" a "hawker". Probably a bit too harsh but definitely a deterrant

Use soldiers : 11/7/2009
We have soldiers here in Barbados who eating the government's food and wearing the government's boots (taxpayers money), but not really serving much useful purpose. We are not at war with anybody or we really don't have to worry about being invaded by anybody, so why not put soldiers to ride on random PSVs during the hours that children are going to and school to maintain order? Give them the authority to pull bad behave children off the vehicles, and call the nearest police station to collect them and take them to the station. Keep them there while their parents are notified about the situation. Furthermore I think the police should be granted power to administer corporal punishment. If their parents can't seem to get them under control then somebody else has to do it.

This is what teachers have to contend with on a daily basis. Out of control students. Do you think that these students have any interest in work? If the Barbadian public is so shocked by this, perhaps they need to hear from the teachers in the secondary school system. Better yet, just visit youtube and see the graphic videos of our school children wukking up on each other in the classroom.

With the photo bearing the licence plate, the evidence of the person who took the photo, the Police you turned around, any others who witnessed this uncouth stuff as the bus travelled on, I assume that the permit for this bus will soon be revoked and it will be taken off the road, irrespective of who owns it. It is perhaps unbelievable to those whom have never seen how these animals climb in and out of the bus via the windows. What a dangerous situation! This driver could easily have been distracted and injure innocent people on the road. Retired.

Well, Well, Well : 11/7/2009
I just want to say that you drive 45 miles/hour in a 35 mile/hour zone until you are caught. I say this because it seems that no meaningful action will be taken by the authorities/drivers of these vehicles to curtail this reckless behavior, until one of those students end up dead. The solution that I will offer to help deal with this bahavior on PSVs would be to suspend their permits to operate those vehicles for a period of time if they are reported for this violation. It is only the then that the drivers of these PSVs will be driven to take serious action against this unruly behavior on their buses. Why wait until one of these students suffer the lost of his/her life to act?

A leopard never changes its spots : 11/7/2009
If these school children are behaving like this now, and they are supposed to be under a disciplned environment at school during the school day, what does that tell us about them when they leave school and are let loose on society? a leopard never changes its spots, neither will they. But what is the solution to the problem? Corporal punishment has been ruled out, and as my mother used to say "if you don't hear, you will feel." Some others used to say "what sweetens goat mout will burn he behind."

How Long is Too Long : 11/7/2009
The more we speak of change the more things remain the same. There is no way that we should accept students behaving in the manner as depicted. The picture is one thing but we can use our imagination to understand what was actually taking place in the bus all along the route. This has however been a picture of what has been occuring for years. It might have subsided for a while after Prime Minister Thompson initially indicated that students would travel free on public transport and issued an ultimatum to PSV's. The dust has settled and everyone is now back to the old way of doing things. Will we be seeing the same pictures and hear th same stories continually into the next administration. Will we only react to do more when there is injury or some one dies? How long is too long to be talking about this matter?

We are failing to recognise that these are the leaders of tomorrow. While this kind of behavior is not new, we cannot continue to to enable the lack of respect for community. As a bus operator in NYC, that bus would of being "out of service",as this kind of behavior affects the saftey of the riding public and other motorist on the streets. We cannot substitute safetey for lawless actions. Its time to stand up and say ENOUGH. Lets hope all the silent Dr.Agards will not step up.
