WI squad shake-up coming

AFTER TWO HEAVY defeats in a row, West Indies cricket captain Chris Gayle has vowed that changes will be made and he will make them himself.

“Yeah, there will be a few changes,” the captain said when an ABC Radio interviewer asked whether he would sit down with the selectors to consider a shakeup for the third match in Sydney on Friday.

The interview came after the regional team's 8 wicket defeat in Adelaide in the second of the five-match ODI series. Gayle added:

“I tell you what, I don’t actually need to discuss it with any selector. I will make the changes myself at this point in time. I’ll take it on my own.”

The eleven has been the same in the two matches. Left-hand batsmen Wavell Hinds, a late replacement for all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, and Brendan Nash, all-rounder Darren Sammy and fast bowler Gavin Tonge are the four omitted.

Gayle’s intention hints at disagreement over who should and should not be in the starting elevens.

It is reminiscent of Brian Lara’s action in the final Test of the 2004 South African tour when he borrowed rival captain Graeme Smith’s pen at the toss to scratch Adam Sanford’s name from the listed eleven and replace it with Merv Dillon.

Sir Viv Richards was then chairman of selectors and on tour as such. None of the present panel of Clyde Butts, Robert Haynes and Raphick Jumadeen, is in Australia where Gayle, coach David Williams and assistant coach Henderson Springer decide on the team from match to match.

WI TEAM : 2/9/2010
The WI plain and simply need to put and end to selecting the same old underachieving, and incapable players(Morton, Smith,Hinds etc.) time and time again. It's best to give some of the promising talent the opportunity to be bled at that level.Even if you go down 5-0, it would be better than the same results with the aforementioned.

You were told... : 2/9/2010
...to stop all the empty palaver you were engaging in last week about how your team was going to defeat Australia. Now your squad has suffered "TWO HEAVY DEFEATS IN A ROW" (Tony Cozier's words, not mine), so what are you going to do now? I'll tell you what; you're about to make another major blunder. You've opened that big chasm in your face again and on the subject of player changes, here's the great Gayle wisdom that has gushed forth:
"I'LL TELL YOU WHAT, I DON'T ACTUALLY NEED TO DISCUSS IT WITH ANY SELECTOR. I'LL MAKE THE CHANGES MYSELF AT THIS POINT IN TIME. I'LL TAKE IT ON MY OWN".
Here's what you "need' to do "at this point in time" chum.
Swallow your stupid pride, sit down with your selectors, Mr. Arrogant Head-Strong, and get some good advice and guidance about how to be a Captain. That is what they are there for.
And from now, until this nightmare of a tour comes to a merciful end, your vocabulary should be restricted to the following: "Hello", "Good Morning", "How are you?", "I would like so-and-so for breakfast, lunch or dinner", and "Good Night"

Sick and tired of empty bags!

I hope the first person Gayle scratches is himself.
