Husband to be sentenced today

THE HUSBAND who set fire to a bedroom while his wife was asleep in it returns to the No. 4 Supreme Court today to be sentenced.
It was back in June last year that Richard O'Hara Cox, of Half Moon Fort, St Lucy, pleaded guilty to unlawfully and maliciously inflicting serious bodily on his wife Jacqueline on November 20, 2002.
He had also been charged with causing serious bodily harm to his wife with intent on the same date, but he denied that charge.
Cox appeared in court yesterday but his attorney, Vincent Watson, was absent.
Prosecutor Principal Crown Counsel Anthony Blackman said it appeared Cox had not communicated with Watson over the weekend and, as a result, the attorney was not present.
Blackman said Watson would be available today, and Justice Dr Sonia Richards adjourned sentencing.
The court had heard that the wife, who had a turbulent relationship with her husband, went to bed around 10 p.m. but awoke in the early hours of Novembers 20, 2002, to a burning bedroom at their Half Moon Fort home.
She jumped through a window and came face to face with her husband.
She already had burns to her lower limbs but was forced to flee again. Her husband, however, caught her and, as he started to beat her, he said: "I told you that I am going to kill you."
The wife escaped because she pretended to be dead. She was later rescued by officers from the Barbados Fire Service.

Mr. Watson, I hope that you got some money before representing Mr. Cox this occasion. Mr. Cox treated his wife worst than a stranger, or an enemy. Seven years to wait, I hope that Cox was spending those years in jail and he had a boyfriend there. When will some men understand that a woman/wife is not a retarded child that they carry home to duck. Women wake up and leave those ignorant men behind at the start of signs of abuse. This is 2009!

Bajan in the Bronx, you have taken a strange position based on the article. Is this person "family to you"? Or are you saying that what he did was "not so bad after all"? Or is it that you think the wife deserved what she got? Your position is really puzzling given the information in the article. Can you really imagine going to sleep in the safety of your bed and waking up on fire? Then to realise that it was not an accident and to be confronted by a person waiting to finish you off? I hope that the defense Attorney and Justice Dr. Sonia Richards take into consideration time served while awaiting sentence during this sentencing phase. It is almost incredulous that such a dastardly act committed seven years ago is now being concluded. The sentencing for the charge of serious bodily harm should now be reduced to time served. If he had been sentenced in 2003, he would probably be released today.

It has to take a very angry, hateful man to sit and comtemplate this without sparing a thought for the consequences. So angry that the destruction of the home, his or somelse's if they were renting was meaningless. I guess he had seven years to stop and think and hopefully will have many more to sit alone and learn christian feelings. Why is this man being charged for bodily harm? Should it not be attempted murder? Why is my island behind the times? We are living in serious times, and the courts in Barbados must be updated. If people feel that they can commit a crime and get away, they will continue. I asked the law makers in Barbados to please study and up grade the laws to protect the innocent.

I really don't know the law...but shouldn't he be charged with attempted murder? He tried to kill this woman, he even continued to beat her even after she jumped out a window trying to run for her life. Come on Courts... give me a break!

Mr Cox you deserve life in prison for what you have done. The amount of hatred that you display for you wife is incomprehensible.
