Personality of the decade : 3/9/2010
I don't know if I am allowed to weigh in on this considering I am not Bajan. But if we are talking about a decade it has to be Patrick Husbands. Who else has won seven championship in one decade. That's an amazing accomplishment and a remarkable rate of consistency comparable only to Tiger Woods feat, who by-the-way would have won it by many lengths if he was Bajan.
Even wiith his accomplishment, he is still the little boy from Hars Gap. No pretense, no chip on the shoulder - just his ever ready simile and kind heartedness.
Patrick is truly the personality of the decade.

Who is Eric Holder, was he born in Barbados, and what has he contributed to Barbados?

: 12/7/2009
remember people...the pol is for Barbadian personality of the decade....we all are impressed with Rihanna...her time will come...but the decade is ten years ....so other equally hard working Bajans should be the ones in mind....stay warm on the rock...and remember all o' we is de same face from de same race...

Caribbean Man

Definitions Please : 12/6/2009
I don't Know - you become personality of the decade because you are the most well known person that Barbados produced - suppose you were a continent skipping serial killer? This is really a slap in the face for those who worked so hard to develop this country.

Bajan Personality of the Decade : 12/6/2009
I don't know who Patrick Husbands is but I do know that if you tell anyone drom anywhere in the world that you from Barbados and they look puzzelled, just say wher Rihanna is from and they face light up. Rihanna without a doubt should be the Personality of the Decade.

Rihanna for sure!
she has more number one hits than any artist this decade, and is second only to MJ in total number one hits...

ERIC HOLDER : 12/6/2009
THE ATTORNEY GENERAL, DR.ERIC HOLDER, A GENTILE, OF BARBADIAN PARENTAGE, IS THE SWEETEST MAN ON EARTH, HE AND HE ALONE KNOWS THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE NATION IN AMERICA, WHO HAVE TWO PASSPORTS, AND THAT IS THE JEWS-ISREALIES, SO ERIC YOU SEE HOW MUCH PROBLEMS YOU ALL CREATE BY ALLOWING THIS DOBBLE STANDARD TO CONTINUE. CHANGE WILL COME, WHEN ERIC?

why Eric?

: 12/6/2009
OWEN ALL THE WAY. NOW MORE THAN EVER

No Politicians : 12/6/2009
How and why would you think of nominating Politicians for Barbadian Personality of the Decade? Rhianna has made Barbados a household name throughout the world despite people thinking she is not a good role model...she never chose to be a role model to your kids...you be the role model...Ryan Brathwaite too is the only other person on the list that should be considered. Please tell me ...if Eric Holder had not been made Attorney General of the USA would he have even been considered...what has he done for Barbados...be real...

HOW MUCH LONGER?? : 12/5/2009
When will this poll run until.......don't you have a deadline??? Are you waitingg for more people to vote for the loser ???? When Rihanna has already won.
JUST WONDERING!!!!!

Patrick Husbands all the way : 12/5/2009
Rihanna - Love her but we need suitable role-models for the youth..
Did you all forgot about Patrick Husbands? He continues to uphold Barbados in Canada. He is highly respected and very humble. He is the #1 jockey in Canada.
If Rihanna, Obadele Thompson, Ryan Brathwaite, Eric Holder and Dr Nurse name is there, Patrick Husbands name should be there 100x....He has been representing Barbados for "donkey" years. Eventhough he is a citizen of Canada, when he wins his races, he always solutes Barbados and let the spectators know, "This one is for Bim".
Come on now people....
Out of Canada

Go Ri Ri : 12/5/2009
Indeed, she is the one person who literally put Barbados on the map. She has the most recognizable name in the world out of the other competitors and because of that, she deserves to be the Barbadian personality of the decade.Additionally, Ri Ri makes sure to mention her Barbados whenever she performs. You go girl!!

Men be fair : 12/4/2009
What Chris Brown did to her has brought world wide attention to how brutal men can be and do something to women that a man would never try to a man, what a sissy. I wonder what Rihanna's father thinks

Bajan in Atlanta

What about Patrick : 12/4/2009
I think Patrick Husbands needs to be included on this list. He represented Barbados and the Caribbean in the Kentucky Derby in 2006, and has been consistent in the winnings at Woodbine in Canada for several years this decade.

: 12/3/2009
NATION Employees???? - I see!!!!! You should have approached the man-on-the-street. Your handling of this is very bias, Ms. Lynch-Foster

Just a couple more questions : 12/3/2009
Thanks for your information, Ms. Lynch, but it would also be great to learn about your survey. Was it a list of persons and the persons who received the most votes was brought to the public? If so, how many persons were included on the list? How many surveys were sent around? Did you get a cross section of Nation employees who were polled? How many of your employees polled actually completed their surveys? I know, I know, before anyone says it, I have way too much interest in this process, and too much time on my hands.

On vacation

Digital Editor's Note : 12/3/2009
The nominees were selected based on an internal survey sent around to NATION employees.

Most people think she's a Jamaican.

Flying fish.

;decade person : 12/3/2009
OBAMA for sure to think that a black man can become the prime minister or america is mind blowing oopps oops ooopps u said barbados my bad then i would have to say mr david thompson i watch him grow from 18 yrs and up my school used to debate him yearssss ago that is when they had the debating society in school and we would have the debates and then a social evening which went really well and i can still remember those days when david would just tear us up i mean tear is up around the time when they had a guy like everton ifill the headboy around the time was a shortish light shin fellow i cannn remember the rest of the guys name just everton i think her was from st james
and i have watch david thompson just grow and grow and i know the best is still to come from him

mr hero

: 12/3/2009
There is an adage in public relations and advertising which goes along the lines that There is no such thing as bad publicity!
Like her or hate her, Rihanna has done more to put Barbados on the world map than ANY other Bajan living or dead!
Her music has been translated into many languages and she continues to 'big up' Barbados in all her interviews - despite the hate she continues to gets from her little rock of an island home!
Obadelle and even Ryan's feats are remarkable given our population size, but let's face it, while memorable to us, after a few minutes they were forgotten globally.
Rihanna's music however, will live on maybe forever and she will be forever linked to Barbados.
People, understand, this girl is the second biggest thing to ever come out of the entire West Indies, behind only the greatest himself - Robert Nestor Marley!
Deal with it!!!!

no 1 personality : 12/3/2009
my choice is definitely david

mr thompson

What no entrepreneurs? : 12/3/2009
This list does not include any entrepreneurs, this can be a category all on its own. Maybe the Nation needs to get together a small panel to look at the decade in the areas of culture (music & literature etc), sports, education, agriculture, science, medicine, innovation, business/entrepreneurship, politics and then come up with a top ten in each category. Explain like "the rodent" is saying, what the criteria was for selection and then let the public do the judging.

Disappointed

We sell ourselves short! : 12/3/2009
It is unfortunate that we could not have had a "top ten" personality of the decade list. There are so many Barbadian doing well, and here it is we cannot even identify a list of 10 persons from whom to choose! I notice the list does not involve anyone in agriculture, literature, fine art, education, medicine, or even journalism. If we are serious about recognition, we need to expend the energy and do our research. For that reason I will not vote.

bajan personality : 12/3/2009
A decade is ten years ,so it can be no other than Owen Arthur,of course.
10 yrs ago some of these names were still in Pampers. Get Real people.
Concern Bajan!

barbadian personality : 12/2/2009
I would think that if there is a poll that there would be a criteria for the poll.this is something missing.please relook this .

the rodent

David Thompson : 12/2/2009
My memories of David are very good and pleasant,my wife had just delivered a baby girl at a hospital in Boston when i met a lady who recall fond experiences of him at school when she uses to work there and we had a pleasant talk as he was made leader of our beloved Barbados.

Homegrown

personality of the decade : 12/2/2009
If these are all the choices we have then we are in trouble. Obadele more for his Infamous wife than any thing else. Rihanna, well Poster child for abuse, Ryan yet To defend his title,Two politicians One who choose to undermine the leadership of his party. the other is selling the Island to the highest bidder. who start project they cannot even Finance. Eric Holder if he was a Bajan he could not be holding his present job. Might be wrong but you cannot hold dual citizenship in the USA. my vote goes to the DOC.

BAJANGENIUS.

Barbadian of the Decade : 12/2/2009
Come on folks, if you want to be seroius about this Poll, it asked for a Barbadian Person of the Decade - not year. Hence some of those on the lsit should not have been included i.e. Eric Holder, Rihanna, Ryan Brathwaite - while they have and I am sure will continue to have great achievements they do not fit into this bracket.
Proud Bajan in America

personality of the decade : 12/2/2009
Obadele Thompson: The perfect example of:
"He who gives up, never wins and, he who wins, never gave up." Every young Barbadian can achieve his goals when looking back at this man, Obadele.

martin ettenes

: 12/2/2009
And just what criteria was used to qualify these, may I ask?
What about Sir George Alleyne, Sir Hilary Beckles, Dr Carol Jacobs? True Barbadians championing a cause.

: 12/2/2009
Obadale Thompson has made us proud. Has accepted him reward with humility and still remains humble, approachable, spiritual and a true committed family man despite the bad publicity by his wife odds. What better example! Eric Holder onlybecame popular locally since since his new appointment. While Rhianna has put us in the limelight, she seems hell-bent on taking us out also. Ryan Brathwaite is an early bird, more popular at home right now than abroad. The politicians are popular in their own right and should not have been included here.

Rihanna : 12/2/2009
Barbadian Personality - Do you read your Bible???? You must.

wjm

Decade personality : 12/2/2009
Not too proud these days,It would be interesting to hear someone, other than yourself speak about you and your ability and decency, rather than blow your own horn, and cringe when you hear her name, tell us about living in America as a second class human being and try singing some prayers to your maker.

Bajan in T.O

Barbadian personality : 12/2/2009
Owen Arthur . Note you said the person of the decade . A decade is ten years . Rhianna ,Ryan ,Eric all came on the popularity radar recently. If not for him and the prevoius government we would be in more trouble now that the world has an economic down turn .They may have done things tht are questionable but which government has not ?. Give jack his jacket .

Cindy

Owen : 12/2/2009
Iam in no sense politically affiliated to any party politics in Barbados, but i simply have to give my vote to Owen Arthur, his contribution as prime minister has been, if judged on a performance on the job basis, is exemplary.

: 12/2/2009
YES !!!YES RIHANNA all the way for me......I DON'T SEE NOTHING WRONG WITH HER. I WANT HER TO TO WIN THIS. LOTS OF PEOPLE ALL OVER LOVE HER. MY VOTE IS FOR HER.
THANKS

personality : 12/2/2009
Mr. Arthur has been at the helm of this country for most of this last decade, and i think it would be fair to say that the island was well managed during his tenure. Like all mortals no one scores 100%. With regard to your choice of candidates i think that you could have included other candidates apart from politicians entertainers and sports persons. History has shown that these are not the ones who change mankind for the better.

hilary

who's the Barbadian personality of the decade : 12/2/2009
No other than Rihanna
Johnson

Rihanna??? : 12/2/2009
The question is: personality of the decade!
A decade means 10 years...
Who has heard of Rihanna 10 years ago?

just thinking

PERIOD! : 12/2/2009
Eric Holder has more integrity in his little toe's nail than Owen & David Thompson togheter. No oe outsdie barbados knows' thier name nor will remember them for anyting special..Holder & rihanna will be remembered 50 yrs from now. PERIOD

3rd eye

Ryan without a doubt ! : 12/2/2009
Logically, Ryan Brawthwaite demonstrated that he posessed that much needed capacity and determination to not only have our national flag raised, but also to cause the entire world to hear our national anthem played in its entirety ! Ryan's success has promoted Barbados more than any tourism dollar can and he's more than deserving of this national award/reward. Remember, Ryan didn't bring us BRONZE, he brought us GOLD !

Sylvester Forde

: 12/2/2009
Firstly i would really like to know why people got Rihanna for Barbados's Personality of the Decade??????? nothing she does is Bajan its more american, plus she is too young and getting recognized for alot of folly she is doing, which is promoting Barbados, but it a negative way.
Secondly, who is Eric is American
Thirdly, who is Dr Leonard Nurse?????????
Fourthly, Owen Arhur?????? sure, if u mean the bajan drinking personality go ahead.
Fifthly, i have not heard nothing about Oba over years except when his wife Marion Jones was going prison i dont even think he sees himself as a Bajan
Sixthly, i have no issues with Mr Thompson but i dont think he should be in this category as yet.
Seventhly, out of all the options i would rather vote for Ryan, although he is now starting out, she out of all these options is my choice.
and finally you say Bajan personalities so what about Irving Burgie, Errol Barrow, Dame Nita Barrow, Sir Garfield Sobers, etc. But then again i guess it depends on what peoples definition of bajan personality is.

Barbadian Personality : 12/1/2009
I do not want Rhianna representing my beautiful island home the way she's doing it! Barbados has been on the map long before she was born. I cringe when i hear her name mentioned. 55 yrs ago i came to the US and i clearly remember my teachers in awe when they heard me read and when they checked my arithmetic. They wanted to know where i learned all of that...I proudly said my school in Barbados! Of course they had not heard of us, but as time went on more Bajan kids came to my school and all the teachers were thrilled because they were getting some more "Smart kids from Barbados", I was always so proud to be a Bajan at those tender years of my life. The teachers loved teaching Bajan kids, they said their jobs were easier with us. they were so impressed that in the mid 1950's and the evils of segregation we Bajan kids were confident and proud and not afraid of the horrors of our new environment. We brought a level of decency, strength and pride with us, we had no need to fear this American land. I was all of 8 yrs old when i left my island home, I've raised some proud American born Bajan kids, and now my grandchildren are proud American born Bajan kids. These days when people talk about Barbados and Rhianna i am embarassed. She is not doing anything for us. She is not putting us on the map, greater and wiser people have done that. She needs to cool her heels and learn to sing!

Not too proud these days!

Barbadian personality of the decade : 12/1/2009
Rihanna! hands down! There is no one who has generated more name recognition for Barbados than Rihanna! I was even more proud of the way she conducted herself in the media spotlight regarding the Chris Brown abuse scandal. She's a class act! Proud to be a Bajan in Massachusetts!

rihanna : 12/1/2009
My vote is for Rihanna

bhgxb

Eric Holder : 12/1/2009
So - he can't hold a Barbadian Passport????

Just Asking

: 12/1/2009
Its says my submission has not been accepted BUT this is the first time I duh vote !

CANT FIND MI Brother

: 12/1/2009
It's gotta be Rihanna. She has placed us squarely on the world map. She always speaks and blesses Barbados. She has millions of ans worldwide who read up and learn about Barbados as if she is a missing messiah.
Number two would be Ryan Brathwaite because he too has given us owrldwide recognition. However in terms of real recognition in the political world, it could be Eric Holder who has proudly let his bajan heritage be known but he is still an America. Those are my three votes in order.
Wayne Lord
Toronto, Canada

Personality of the decade. : 12/1/2009
Mr. Thompson has not yet proven himself; Rihanna, is too young to show what she has, tme will tell; I am not sure the Eric Holder has Barbadian citizenship - it is not automatic. Ryan as good as he is has got to repeat himself- good luck. When one looks a round Barbados and read the international press, one can see and read of the accomplisments of the former P.M Mr. Owen Arthur. We hope that the current PM will build on what has been established, and then he will be accoladed.
Ego-Ottawa.

DIVIDE HIS VOTES : 12/1/2009
Eric Holder is an American personality not a Barbadian personality. Therefore, his votes should be divided among the other worthy contestants. Whether or not Eric has visited Barbados or contributed to Barbados is not an issue here. The title spells out the requirements BARBADIAN personalities of which Eric is not. The title spells out the requirements BARBADIAN personalities. If it were up to me I would give all of Eric's votes to Owen. Owen has waved the “Broken Trident” far and wide and has brought credit to our beautiful Island.

No Eric Holder : 12/1/2009
Eric Holder bin to Barbadso many time. This person need to read the paper

Eric Holder? : 12/1/2009
Why Eric Holder? The man is American of Barbadian parentage. Never contributed nothing to this society and probably never even visited the island except for his state visit earlier this year.

ERIC HOLDER IS NOT BAJAN

: 12/1/2009
Personality of the decade is the key to the question people. Mr. Arthur I don't know why they hate you so can't they look around and see how our Gem has grown. We pray that we can survive or that the Dem get a clue real quick. The Warm up session don't seem to be coming to an end!

: 12/1/2009
Eric Holder is not a Bajan as far as I am concern and Ryan Brathwaite need to repeat his feat to make him viable in my opinion. I say Rihanna who is internationally known, and riding high on the charts would be my pick. But congrats to all as their are worthy in their own right.

Eric Holder is a sell out : 12/1/2009
^insert big stupse^
GO OWEN GO! Its so amazing that Owen still so popular and bajans put in David.

Stupse

: 12/1/2009
Rihanna needs to be taken off this list. What has she really done or contributed to Barbados. Her looks and body? You cannot not place knowledge, education and real commitment to the country with looks, beauty and not talent.
Disgust.

who's the Barbadian personality of the decade? : 12/1/2009
All rihanna gave barbados is bad press, eric holder aint buss a stroke fuh we yet! wunna dreaming. whoever came up with these people's names is missing too much upstairs. the question asks about the decade and then u go on to put ppls name on the list who 3 yrs ago you wud be asking who??? Dr nurse, the two mr thompsons and arthur are the only ones who qualify. COME AGAIN NATION.

stupse

WHY ERIC HOLDER? : 12/1/2009
Why is Eric Holder listed here? Eric Holder will tell you in a heart beat that he is an American of Barbadian parentage and that is rightfully so. My questioning his name here is not to take away any credit from Mr. Holder who is very successful, and quite an outstanding citizen but why should he be placed in this category. To place Eric here is surely a slap in the face to other “Barbadians” who are more worthy of being on this list.

ERIC & RIRI! : 11/30/2009
It would have to undoubtedly be Eric Holder & Robyn Rihanna Fenty. Not to disrespect the other characters but they are in a league of their own respectively for creativity & integrity.
David Thompson & Owen Authur would have to tie for LAST, i cant imagine why they are even on the list, both of them have the same right wing colonial mentality and refuse to change Barbados for the better by making change to make Barbados a Republic with an independently elected president, like St Vincent is attempting and limiting their run of power to two terms, Barbados could be the first if MR thompson has a vision of what breakifn away from UK dogma with a free republic and elected presidents can mean for the integrity of the caribbean people and thier politics.
