He's no longer Sir Allen

Published on: 11/3/2009.

ST JOHN'S - It's no longer "Sir" Allen Stanford.

The panel awards that approves candidates for knighthood in Antigua and Barbuda has voted to rescind the honour granted to Texas financier R. Allen Stanford in 2006.

The chairwoman of the National Honours Committee says the panel voted unanimously to revoke Stanford's title.

Jacqui Quinn-Leandro said yesterday the panel took the action because of the embarrassment Stanford caused the country with the alleged Ponzi scheme he ran from his Antigua-based offshore bank.

The vote needs the signature of the governor general but that is considered a formality.

The country has never before revoked such an award. (AP)

Phantom Mentality : 11/3/2009
West Indian people continue to believe that there is a hooded savior ready to rescue us from our hardships. We have the brains, even if not the $$ to help ourselves. Let's do it!

What about his money? : 11/3/2009
The law in the US is that a person is assumed innocent until proven guilty. When is he going to have his money return to him from the 20/20 cricketers.Just could not wait for the trial.

VERDICT WITHOUT A TRIAL! : 11/3/2009
According to my little knowledge of the Law, 'a person is innocent until proven guilty'. As such, I think it rather unfair for the powers that be to stript Mr. Stanford of his knighthood, before him being convicted. Remember, folks, this guy is still a suspect.

Money Woes : 11/3/2009
Will the cricketers who recieved enormous sums of money through cricket sponsored Mr. Stanford,be made to give back their booty?

Hope Lessons are learned : 11/3/2009
I hope that Caribbean governments and people have learnt a valuable lesson from this Stanford case. Just because someone comes flashing gifts and cash to Caribbean people and governments, we always behave as if we are beggars or we are desperately in need. We always go out of our way to give them the best of everything and usually look the other way when we shouldn't. Wake up and let us stand on our own!

They should have awaited the outcome of the trial. : 11/3/2009
I could be wrong but it looks like they're going by what the media has been saying?

Thats the right message to send out to anyone who decides they may want to follow in his footsteps. Well done, those that do wrong should not be honoured.
