KINGSTON - The two female jurors who were arrested and charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice after they were allegedly caught accepting $60 000 from the mother of a man facing a murder charge, are set to face more charges.
Head of the Clarendon police division, Superintendent Dayton Henry, said the women - identified as 44-year-old domestic helper Natalie Sill of Webb Lane in May Pen, and jury foreman 23-year-old model Verona Samuels of Freetown - will face the court on charges of contempt of court today. On Monday, both were remanded after they were taken to the May Pen High Court.
"We are still getting advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on the list of charges that can be placed against them," Henry told the Observer.
On Tuesday, DPP Paula Llewellyn was livid.
"I consider this is an outrage and an assault on all that is decent. I have been fully briefed by the Crown counsel and will be appointing a Crown counsel to prosecute this case," Llewellyn said.
The Bar Association of Jamaica also condemned the alleged attempt to pervert the justice system and put forward several recommendations to improve the process of selecting jurors.
It is alleged that the accused man, Rohan Johnson - also called "Blazer" - heads the King Street gang which is based in Lionel Town, also in Clarendon. He was arrested and charged with the gun murder of former policeman Aston Ferguson. (Jamaica Observer)
