LET THE Tigers roar . . . again!
For the sixth straight year, Jordan (Yellow) are the champions at the St Lucy Secondary Inter-House Track and Field Competition.
Yellow ruled the National Stadium yesterday with 961 points, dismissing the challenge from Ifill (781), Corbin (506) and Ward (377).
Jordan's Markayla Yearwood celebrated her 18th birthday with a hat-trick of victrix ludorum titles. The versatile athlete also plays basketball and netball and was the toast of the Under-20 Division with 94 points. Most of the events were completed at school.
She had wins in the discus, triple jump, 400, 800 and 1500 metres; was second in the high jump, long jump and shot put; third in the javelin, 200 and 3000 metres on grass and was fifth in the 100 metres.
Fittingly, she brought Jordan home with a strong run to win the 4x400 metres.
Housemate André Austin was the victor ludorum with 70 points. He won the 100 metres in 11.47 seconds, but was second in the 200 and long jump. He also had victories in the 400, 800m and was third in the triple jump. He was also third in the high jump and fifth in the 1500 metres, 3000 metres, shot put and discus.
The fastest man in the school was Jordan's Shirley Gill. During the preliminaries, he clocked 10.53 seconds (hand times) in the Under-20 Boys' 100 metres, erasing the 2001 mark of 10.90 set by Jason Farley. Two false starts robbed him of a chance to log his speed on the track.
He came back to win the 200 metres in 22.89 seconds, the long jump with 6.38 metres and the high jump at 1.78 metres.
Reynaldo Broomes of Jordan broke the second record, shattering Lennox Ellis' 1990 mark of 4 minutes, 19.80 seconds. Broomes completed the three-and-three-quarter-lap race in 4 minutes 04 seconds. Ellis also has the inter-school record of 4:05.41 from 1991.
Ifill's Dominique Phillips did the sprint double en route to winning the Under-17 Boys' division. He also won the high jump, was second in the long jump and shot put and fourth in the discus. In the 4x100 metres relay, Phillips showed his speed, catching Carl Phillips, who was second in the 100 metre, on the line.
Another Ifill athlete, Alea Jordan, stood out in the Under-15 division, excelling over the longer distances. She won the 400, 800, 1500 and 3000 metres and was second in the 200 metres.
Charles Reece, the Michael Jackson impersonator, entertained his schoolmates and parents with his Billie Jean routine as athletes got a welcome break before the 4x400 metres relays.
With the amount of talent across the houses, St Lucy should also put together a very competitive boys' team for inter-school sports.
