Worrell, Prescott set for duel
Published on: 11/21/2009.
Defending champion Hoskins Worrell plans to bring style, flair and condition. William Prescott wants to match him with size, shape and density.
It should add up to a riveting bodybuilding contest for the top prize of $4 000 at tomorrow’s Darcy Beckles Invitational Classic at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.
This is not a two-man contest by any means but Worrell and Prescott are the unquestioned favourites to lift the top prize in the absence of reigning Central American and Caribbean (CAC) overall champion Martinus Durrant.
Both men are seeking redemption. Prescott was second best in the heavyweight class at the Caribbean Championships for the last two years, while Worrell was below his best at the Nationals.
The contest will have a regional flavour, with Bermuda’s Ross Caesar, winner of the Caribbean light middleweight class, eager to challenge Worrell and Prescott.
Patrick Harris, Laron Gibson, Therold Babb, and Anderson Fish Bispham, are expected to be in the line-up for what is reputed to be the most financially rewarding contest ever held here.
Erin Promotions, the contest organisers, will be honouring former Barbados and Caribbean queen Jenny Beckles and heavyweight stalwart Roger The Black Prince Sealy, for their sterling contribution to the sport.
Special awards are also in store for two of the most respected administrators of the past. Winfield Bascombe and Delbert Kojak Bannister, pillars in the sport, will be recognised for their administrative skills.
Bannister, 88, the founder of the renowned Zenith Club, is expected to be in attendance, while the 78-year-old Bascombe, a former team manager and Caribbean masters winner, has been ailing for some time and will be represented by a relative.
The night will be enhanced by a guest-posing exhibition from American pro Leo Battleship Ingram, the fifth-place finisher in the Atlantic City Pro. (MK)
