BERGER YMCA ended the double aspirations of league champs BNB Deacons on Sunday night as Rohan "Teno" Thomas scored a hat-trick to inspire an emphatic 4-1 victory in men's knockout hockey action at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.
YMCA advanced to the semi-finals to face Select Car Rentals Combermere School Old Scholars (CSOS), who were 2-1 winners over Vitamalt All Stars.
The other semi-final will feature Eastern Stars and Butterfield Bank Empire after both teams sealed their spots on Saturday.
Eastern Stars, who endured a tight 4-3 win over UWI in the preliminary round a week ago, dominated a depleted Inspire Sports Wanderers team to win 6-2.
Akeem Rudder scored twice within the first 12 minutes to set the tone, while Brian Burrowes, Clairemonte Clarke, Ronnel Hunte and Mark Murray completed the rout with second-half goals.
Mark Owen and Damien Hinds replied late for Wanderers.
Empire defeated CGI Maple 3-1, with three goals in four minutes late in the second half seeing off the St James club.
Venslough Leacock's fifth-minute strike held off the Blues until the match turned with a quarter of an hour remaining when Joel Bodkin, Errol Clarke and Paul Gill netted for Empire.
In women's play, 2009 league winners CSOS were taken all the way by Deacons but eventually progressed to the semi-finals through a penalty shoot out.
Powerhouses Empire, dethroned by CSOS as league queens but still defending knockout champs, blasted UWI 9-0 to advance.
Alison Haynes notched a hat-trick, while Charlia Warner (2) Rosanna Warner, Dionne Clarke, Lynn-Marie Wilson and Shakira Oxley were the other scorers.
All Stars were also emphatic winners with Nakera Downes (3), Cherise Moore (2) and Hariette Clarke carrying them to a 6-0 rout of Banks Raiders.
Maple also made the final four after winning via a walkover of Eastern Stars, who were forced to default after an injury to one of its players early in the second half of their match. (CC)
