SPRINGER MEMORIAL and The Lodge School are through to the semi-finals of the Barbados Secondary Schools' Netball League Under-19 Competition.
The two other semi-finalists will be decided tomorrow evening at the Netball Stadium after rain affected yesterday's matches.
Springer, the defending champions, had to come from behind to edge a stubborn Lester Vaughan side 23-22, while Lodge had an easy 21-13 victory over Combermere School.
Springer got off to a slow start, trailing 3-7, but fought back to trail by only one (12-13) at half time after the introduction of Jeneice Clarke at goal attack. Clarke scored nine goals from nine attempts and Springer led 19-16 at the end of the third quarter.
Physical education teacher Julie Phillips moved Clarke to her natural position at goal defence with one minute and 48 seconds off the clock in the fourth quarter to try and nullify the Lester Vaughan attack.
They came up short, despite outscoring Springer 6-4 in the last quarter. Victoria McMillan was very effective at shooter with nine goals from 11 attempts and former Tonisha Rock-Yaw was rock solid at goal attack with 13 goals from 14 attempts.
Combermere got the quick 6-3 lead and continued to, but it was just one goal at the half. However, the accuracy of Shaniqua Thomas (5/9) and Makeda Boxill (8/16) fell in the second half where they were limited to two goals. Combermere failed to score a single goal in the last quarter.
Tamar Piggott led The Lodge School with 13 from 16, Shakelle Clarke added six from 13 and former Under-16 captain Shanice Rock, a transfer from Coleridge & Parry, two from three.
The Garrison School will play Alleyne School while Queen's College take on Foundation in the remaining quarter-finals. (SAT)
