‘Poppy’ frenzy

Well worth the wait!

After waiting some seven hours to see the main attraction of the FAS7STAR Hennessy Artistry on the Beach, Popcaan and his 25-man strong entourage made it worthwhile for the thousands gathered at Pirate’s Cove on Bay Street when they finally hit the stage after 11 on Sunday night.

For a performer as exuberant and dynamic as Popcaan you can’t go wrong. He’s hot, his music is “lit” and when he shows up you are guaranteed to get your money’s worth.

Poppy, as he is affectionately called, delivered once more sending the fair-sized crowd into a frenzy. In a set lasting 70 minutes, 20 more than scheduled, he took the audience on a journey spanning the years with hit after hit. Songs like Controlla – his recent hit with rapper Drake; Nah Idle, Addicted, Give Thanks (Unruly Prayer), and Ova Dweet moved the audience who flocked to the front of the stage to secure whatever vantage point they could to get closer to him.

That’s when he hit them with older favourites like Party Shot (Ravin part 2), Gangster City, Only Jah Know, Fall In Love, and the newest single Family that was released this past October. Before he brought the curtain down with a rendition of Everything Nice, he wished Barbados a happy Independence and thanked Barbadians for their support from “day one”.

Before the Unruly Boss there was strong Bajan representation with performances from Scrilla, Marzville and Stiffy. Scrilla’s performances of Wood and Gyal Drop went over well leaving the crowd shouting “boik, boik” but it was Bashment Soca king, Stiffy Star Quality who was the star since he had the crowd “plug in to all”.
