After a ten-year marriage, Barbados Football Association (BFA) and Digicel have parted ways.

Local football’s governing body is set to lose up to $80 000 this season after the telecommunications giant failed to renew its long-standing title sponsorship of the Premier League.

This was revealed by senior vice-president Captain Al Walcott, during a media briefing at the association’s Wildey headquarters yesterday.

“Currently, the title sponsorship for the Barbados Football Association is open, which means we are still in negotiations right now.

“The way I have structured the package, it allows for sponsorship of the Premier League and the stadium,” explained marketing consultant Olivia Gittens, who joined the team last month.

“We have seven international games where [their] name will be on the stadium.

“We’re also giving them the opportunity to sponsor the players. We’ve opened it up to allow multiple persons to negotiate on that front.”

A source close to the situation further revealed that Digicel said “they were going through some restructuring at this time and they are not able to sponsor but will reconsider it at another time”. (RA)
