Stench fallout

It was not business as usual for several offices in Bridgetown yesterday as a putrid smell from the Bridgetown Sewage Treatment Plant sent hundreds of workers packing.

The Waste Water Division (WWD) of the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) reported that their initial investigations “suggested that a portion of a noxious substance may have been dumped at the plant” three days ago.

They explained that the substance knocked out the bacteria population which is integral to the waste water treatment process, triggering the strong odour.

By noon yesterday several companies along Cheapside including Pan American Life Insurance, Partners in Parenting Preschool & Day Care, Shopsmart, and Platinum Motors at Redman Drive, had closed for the day, as workers were driven away by the stench. (TG)
