Today, Soroptimist International of Barbados joins with women around the world as we celebrate the achievements of women and their progress throughout the years.
On this International Women’s Day 2018, we are pleased that we have our very own to be proud of – Ms. Donna Babb- Agard Q.C. the newly appointed Director of Public Prosecution and Dame Sandra Mason, our new Governor General.
As the theme for this year’s IWD suggests, we urge all women – let’s continue to Press for Progress in all spheres of society and at all times to achieve gender parity.
SIB sees it as our duty to press for progress through the many programmes we run and the causes we champion as an organization.
We press for progress every time we lobby our governments for legislation that seeks to protect women from all forms of physical, sexual and emotional abuse. Indeed, the amendments to the Domestic Violence and the Sexual Offences Legislation and the new Employment Sexual Harrassment Prevention Act 2017 have paved the way!
We press for progress every time we seek to empower and educate our at-risk teenage girls with the tools needed to achieve their goals and aspirations and emerge as emboldened women in society.
Every time we raise awareness of the scourge of sex trafficking of our women and girls through our Purple Tear Drop Campaign and seek to highlight and prevent this practice from occurring in our society, we press for progress.
We press for progress every day as we actively support and contribute to the health and longevity of the older women at the Soroptimist Village and Activity Centre Eden Lodge St. Michael.
We press for progress every time we encourage our women in society to put their best foot forward through our Professional Development Workshops which equip them with the tools needed to successfully advance their career;
Through our School Leavers Programme at the Springer Memorial School and St. Ursula’s, where we educate girls on pursuing a career in STEM, we also press for progress.
Every time we seek to lead by example and strive to become a role model for equality, it is another stride as we press for progress.
SIB is committed to continuing to educate, empower and enable women and girls, to challenging stereotypes and fighting the abuse of women. Through this and much more, we break down the barriers to achieving gender parity.
