“Bajan Leigh to grace Canadian stage”

Barbadian entertainer Leigh is gearing up to hit the stage in Toronto at the NXNE Showcase during the Taste of the Danforth Festival this weekend.

The annual festival celebrates Danforth's Greek heritage and is said to be one of the biggest street festivals, attracting 1.6 million visitors daily that also take in the diverse cultures found in Canada.

Entertainers such as Tinashe, Daniel Caesar, pop band Chvrches have previously been featured on the show’s roster.

The Dislocated Love singer is a Honey Jam alum who earlier this year represented Barbados on the Club One New Releases Tour to Newfounland.

And while on that tour, she was introduced to NXNE Director Jen Foxx, who she said wanted to work with her more.

“I spoke to Jen about my brand and where I think my place in the industry will be and she then came to our live performance on the tour at Club One. And after I returned to Barbados she sent an email saying she loved my attitude and she wanted to find a way for us to work together,” Leigh said.

An always-grateful Leigh left the island on Kadooment Day to prepare and though she had to miss the festivities here, she said she was excited to take Barbados to the world again.

“I am beyond excited and elated to have this opportunity. This is a full circle moment because I went to school and worked in Toronto . . . . So to go back as a performer is a dream come true. I’m looking forward to this opportunity and where it will take me next,” the 27-year old singer said.

She then thanked her supporters including the Barbados Coalition of Service Industries, the Barbados Cultural Industries Development Authority and Honey Jam for assisting her along the way.

The festival starts today August 10, and her performance will be on Sunday, August 12 at 4 p.m. (TG)
