No. 1 players Sheldene Walrond and Mark “Venom” Griffith advanced to Sunday’s finals of the Barbados Public Workers’ Cooperative Credit Union Limited Monarchs Of The Courts road tennis championship in contrasting styles on Tuesday night.

While Griffith came from a game down to defeat Curtis Jones 24-26, 21-11, 23-21, 21-8, Walrond strolled past the temperamental Rachel Smith 21-14, 21-17 in a game marred by controversy and confusion at De Big Rock Arena.

Walrond was looking to defend her Monarchs title while Smith was seeking to beat Walrond as she did in the St James final. However, scorer Darcy Alleyne lost control of the match which saw a number of stoppages and decisions being reversed, which created confusion.

Smith looked focused in the first game, leading 5-2 before Walrond found her groove and locked the scores at five. The scores were then locked up to ten before a calmer Walrond exploited an agitated Smith to move to 17-10. (KB)
