Barbados Pride will be hoping for a good performance from their batsmen when play starts at 2 p.m. on the second day of the first round day-night pink ball match against the Leeward Islands Hurricanes in the Regional 4-Day Cricket Championship at 3Ws Oval here on Friday.

The home side will resume from 12 without loss, replying to the Leewards Hurricanes’ first innings total of 252 in 72.2 overs.

Openers Shayne Moseley and Anthony Alleyne safely negotiated a tricky ten overs to be eight and two respectively. They will now be looking to give Barbados Pride a solid foundation for experienced batsmen like Shamarh Brooks and Jonathan Carter to build on.

On Thursday’s opening day, Antiguan leg-spinner Haydn Walsh caused early anguish for his former Leeward Hurricanes’ teammates with a five-wicket haul for Barbados Pride but Keacy Carty salvaged the day for the visitors with a second first-class century.

Walsh, who has been with the Barbados franchise for the past couple of the seasons, ended with five for 75 off 16.2 overs.

The 21-year-old Carty, who hails from St Maarten, top-scored for the Hurricanes with a mature and responsible 114 off 199 balls.

He stroked ten fours with a number of classy cover drives and hit one six in five and a half hours at the crease before he was last man out, bowled by a well-disguised googly from Walsh.
Carty reached his century, which contained eight fours and a six in 312 minutes off 187 balls after taking 108 balls and 164 minutes for his fifty, which included three fours and one six.

None of the other batsmen reached 20 even though six of them had double-digit scores. The Hurricanes’ innings was boosted by a whopping 34 extras.

Rookie Keon Harding, who removed openers Montcin Hodge and Rajindra Chandrika cheaply and fellow fast bowler Miguel Cummins captured two wickets each for 33 and 42 runs respectively.

Summarised scores from Thursday’s first day.

Leeward Islands Hurricanes 252 in 72.2 overs (Keacy Carty 114, Terrance Warde 19, Jeremiah Louis 18, Daniel Doram 16, Alzarri Joseph 16, Akeem Saunders 12, Devon Thomas 10; Hayden Walsh 5-75, Keon Harding 2-33, Miguel Cummins 2-42). Barbados Pride 12-0 in 10 overs. (EZS)
