Face-to-face instruction for Class 3 and 4 pupils at Blackman and Gollop Primary School resumed today but some parents are still displeased.

Parent Lester King described the conditions which parents encountered at the school on Monday as “extremely horrible”.

“There was no reason children had to come to school to find dirty desks and chairs in the hall. The ministry was wrong to allow the children to come when they knew the school wasn’t ready the Sunday before,” he said.

Even so, King said he was glad conditions had improved as the children needed face-to-face teaching.

Principal Petrona Holder declined to comment as she said that issue had already been well ventilated. Instead, she spoke about what transpired today.

“The school is open, the schoolchildren have arrived and classes have resumed. The rains have come down to keep down the dust and learning will take place under the usual high quality instruction this school is known for,” she said.

In relation to the cleaning, Acting Chief Education Officer Joy Adamson  said last night that following work by members of the Barbados Defence Force (BDF), a private contractor and members of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), the Staple Grove, Christ Church plant was ready to be put back into operation today. She also thanked the parents for their patience in the situation.

Cleaning of school plants was being undertaken to remove the ash fall from the La Soufriere volcano in St Vincent which began erupting explosively on April 9. (CA)
