Barbados’ best athletes could see their efforts go for naught this year after reports surfaced that the National Sports Council may not be staging the annual National Sports Awards Ceremony in January.
Efforts to reach Minister of Sports John King and NSC chairman Mac Fingall proved futile and acting director Neil Murrell declined comment. But two sources close to the situation spoke about the likelihood amidst the possibility of NSC cutbacks.
While there’s still a slim possibility the event could be held later in 2019, it seems almost certain that this would be the first time in 35 years the sporting fraternity won’t be feted in a glitzy three-piece affair reserved for Barbados’ sportspeople, coaches and administrators.
And no one stands to lose out more than Shane Brathwaite, who was the clear frontrunner for the National Sports Personality Of The Year following a season in which he won four major medals including gold in both the 110 hurdles and 4×100 relay at the Central American and Caribbean Games. (JM)
