What started out as a way to make extra income turned into a flourishing business for Wayne Maloney.
Wayne, the owner of WM Landscaping and Maintenance Inc., landed his first job when he was 18 years old at Rayside Construction Ltd and every weekend he earned more dollars by cutting the lawn for neighbours and a few clients.
When he was laid off, he decided to commit fully to landscaping and was able to officially develop a company from his side job in 1994.
“As I was going along, money was coming in, so I borrowed money from the bank and bought my first truck,” said Wayne. “At the time, one of my loyal customers helped me secure a substantial amount from the bank and as I worked I paid it back.”
Wayne said that it took tremendous effort to build his company from the ground up. As an entrepreneur, especially one who does not have what may be considered as a glamorous job, he said it can be easy to get caught in a sea of discouragement but determination, knowing one’s worth and faith helped him pull through.
“You have to have inspiration and a mindset to achieve your goals. You also have to manage your money properly and plan ahead for uncertainty. In a business like this, competition makes it hard to be sustainable so you have to do good, high-quality work.” (SB)
