“Operators demand respect”

“We are tired of being treated like second-class citizens!”

That was the cry on Wednesday of some public service vehicle (PSV) operators who shed light on the underlying issues that on Tuesday saw the second work stoppage in a week. Last week some operators staged protest action and withheld their services for part of the day.

However, after a more than seven-hour meeting at the National Union of Public Workers’ headquarters on Tuesday, operators who last week formed a new group, the Public Service Vehicle Workers’ Association (PSVWA), agreed to return to their normal schedules yesterday.

They met with the Transport Authority on Wednesday to thrash out their concerns.

However, according to some operators in the Bridgetown terminals, a number of issues remained. These included better working facilities, respect for their profession and court penalties. (SB)
