“BSSAC 2019: A day of records and Carifta qualifications”

Christ Church Foundation’s Dalano Wickham met the CARIFTA qualifying standard in another event during today’s Sol Esther Maynard Zone of the Barbados Secondary School’s Athletic Championships.

Competing at the National Stadium he secured the Under-20 Boys 400 metres in 47.93 seconds surpassing the CARIFTA standard of 48.25. Earlier he qualified for the 400 metres hurdles.

Chloe Lucas also of Foundation ran away with the Under-20 Girls 400 metres when she erased Tiana Bowen’s 2017 zone clocking of 57.71 after her finish of 57.60 seconds.

Aren Spencer of Harrison College also smashed a record when he finished the Under-17 boys 400 metres in 48.95 seconds.

Also completing that event under the record standard was Savion Hoyte of Lester Vaughan with 49.21 and Aquon Waithe of Christ Church Foundation when he finished in 49.93.

Alleyne’s Shakena Massiah also set a new record when she ran away with the Under-17 Girls 400 metres in 58.98 seconds.

Middle distance runner Tafari Bishop of the Coleridge & Parry School ran away with the fastest time in the Under-20 boys 1500 metres.

The athlete of the Elite Distance Track Club who made an early claim for selection for the April CARIFTA Games during the Joseph Payne Memorial Classic, finished that event in a time of four minutes 20.29 seconds.

In the Under-17 long jump event former Alleyne School athlete Shemia Odaine made her mark while representing Lester Vaughan when she won with a wind-aided leap of 5.85 metres (2.3).

Her distance surpassed the CARIFTA qualifying standard of 5.80.

Julian Forde of Harrison College clinched the Under-20 Boys 100 metres when he dismissed the field after capturing his heat in 10.76 seconds and clocking the fastest time overall. (RG)
